Parkinsons Hand Tremors Exercises: Reduce Shaking and Improve Function

  • “Do you struggle with hand tremors that make your life difficult? Do you wish you could have more control over your hands and fingers? If you answered yes, then this video is for you.
    In this video, I’m going to show you some simple and effective exercises that will help you reduce your hand tremors and improve your hand function. These exercises are specially designed for people with Parkinson’s disease and they can make a big difference in your quality of life. So stay tuned and watch this video until the end to learn how to manage your hand tremors with these easy exercises.”
    But before we do the exercises, try picking up a cup or your water bottle and have a sip or write your name on a piece of paper. Rate from 0 to 10 how bad the shaking is and let’s compare that to your performance after doing the exercises.
    First , we need to warm up our hands. The warm-up consists of five movements that will help us loosen up our wrists, hands and fingers. Let’s do them together.
    The first warm-up is wrist rotations. Hold your hands in front of you and rotate your wrists clockwise and counterclockwise. Do this 10 times.
    The second warm-up is dynamic prayer and reverse prayer. For the dynamic prayer, put your hands together in front of your chest and point your fingers back and forth. For the reverse dynamic prayer, place the backs of your hands together in front of your chest and point your fingers toward and away from you. Do this 10 times.
    The third warm-up is open and close your hands. Make sure to open your hands wide and close them into a fist. Do this 10 times.
    And the last warm-up is shoulder touches. Bend your elbows and try to touch your shoulders with your fingertips and then straighten them out back to the starting position. Do this 10 times.
    Now let’s do that proper exercises.
    The first exercise is overhead clapping. Swing your arms up forcefully and clap up on top. Do this 20 times.
    Second exercise is thigh slapping. With your hands coming from over your head, slap your thighs 20 times try to make a sound as loud as possible but if that hurt your thighs, use a pillow over your thighs.
    Third exercise is arm flicking. Starting position is bent, elbows and tried to flick your entire arm as quick as possible. Do this 20 times
    Fourth exercise, is wrist flicking. Bend your elbows and flick your wrist out with palms facing up.
    Fifth exercise is bye-bye. Rapidly shake your wrists and hands down words 20 times.
    Sixth exercise is Handshakes. Keep your hands and wrists, relaxed and shake them like you’re getting rid of water without wiping your hands.
    Seventh exercise is flicking your fingers. Put your thumbs over the rest of your fingers close to the tips, or your fingernails and forcefully flick out like flicking water away from you
    And last exercise is isolated finger flicking. Put your thumb over your index finger and flick forcefully. Do the same to each finger.
    Now that we have done the exercises, try sipping from your cup or from your mug, and compare it to before you did the exercises, and if you wrote your name before the exercises, write your name again, and compare your handwriting before and after doing the exercises.

    I have parkinsons and now I have a full time carer who basically gives me a bath etc. I have PSP and I have lost all my balance since I have had too many falls and felt I cannot walk or get up on my own. A friend sent me this mudra you tube and I thought I want to do this. Will let you know if practising this helps me

    I was diagnosed with "parkinson like disease". I fell in October and could not walk. They prescribed me with madipor which helps with movement. I dont kmow if I actually have it but I still do your exercises which I find very good. Thanks.

    I had a spinal cord injury since 14 years and couldn’t use my hand despite all the therapies.I tried your exercises and since 1 week I already have less a shaking hand,and I’m going to follow your exercises as needed Thank you so much God Bless you .

    Rather helpful. Tqsm. As unable to go gym the exercises are good and teaches to manage the tremor..i have been diagnosed since 2020. Really a complicated PD and have stolen our happiness.😮

    I'm really appreciative and thankful of your providing these exercises. I do them everyday in addition to other exercises. I'm 75 YO and recently diagnosed with PD, on my right side only and as a right handed guitar player it affects my ability to hit the strings properly. Have you any specific exercise recommendations for my situation?

    Ì have knee replacement surgery since two years but due to Parkinson disease I am not able to walk . I am following your videos for exercises to lessen the problem and experiencing good improvement of balancing and self care activities. I am doing squats exercises also as advised by your good self. I am grateful for your precious advise and help.
    I am facing problem of sensations in my both feet toes and feet fingers. Also tingling in these parts. I am facing continuous shaking in my left hand. Ķindly requested to suggest any solution for this problem. Any suitable exercise to overcome this problem.

    My essential tremors have gotten worse lately due to stressful events that are out of my control. Thank you for this informative video and plan to use daily. Love the fact you do these exercises in “real time” with your audience.

      @@Adhya0001 some days are better. Yes I do practice. I wrote the exercises down so I could read from my sheet and not view the video all the time. I also notice that it makes a difference how clean I eat to how severe my tremors are the next day or if I have a sleepless night that affects the tremors as well. It certainly can’t hurt and it’s real easy to do anytime anyplace I would say try it. Good luck!
