Catching and Grill Frying Bluegill (the ridiculously easy way)

  • In one of my first videos I demonstrated an easy way to cook your catch. I called it grill-frying because it was a combination of both grilling and frying. It’s one of my favorites. Let’s try to catch some bluegill and then grill fry them. See the recipe and music credits below:
    Here is the link to Big Mike's channel. / bigmike315fishing
    Recipe for Grill Fried Bluegill
    Ingredients:
    1 1/2 pound of bluegill or other white fleshed fish fillets (crappie tend to fall apart)
    1 large egg
    1 can of evaporated milk
    1 cup of fish breading (Eg. Zatarains, Shore Lunch, Louisiana, etc.)
    1 stick (4 ounces) butter
    Directions:
    In a container, whisk an egg, then add evaporated milk and whisk thoroughly.
    Put fish fillets in the container and submerge them in the milk.
    Keep the container in refrigerator.
    Add two layers of foil to grill. Make sure to allow enough air for the grill to stay lit. Lightly butter or spray the foil with cooking spray (I skipped this step but probably shouldn't have).
    Heat the grill to about 375° F (190° C).
    Lay the fillets down on foil and generously brush them with butter.
    Close lid and cook for 4 minutes.
    Open lid, flip the fillets, and generously butter the other sides.
    Close lid and allow fish to cook for 4 more minutes, no longer.
    The background music is titled “Bill Cheatham.” It was performed by “Shake that Little Foot string band.” It was downloaded from archive.org. There it was incorrectly labeled “Bill Cheathum.” It carries a Creative Commons license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike. I was able to find this about the song:
    “Although this tune is of nineteenth century origin, much of its current popularity is due to its frequent performance by the late Arthur Smith, a Grand Ole Opry star of the 1930s and early 1940s.”

    Gills are so much fun to fish for. They’re like little piranhas without teeth. Voracious feeders and put up a great fight on light tackle. Doesn’t hurt that they’re delicious too ! Great video !

    John I expected a cooking video, but got a very good schooling(no pun intended) in fishing. Now onto the recipe I've never seen the grill/frying method. After watching how you cooked up these larger than usual bluegill I think your methodology makes all the sense in the world, and the outcome of the recipe was an absolute success!

    • @Juanelo1946
      @Juanelo1946  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Glen!! The fishing was easier and more fun this time out. I've made this recipe a 100 times before on the old outdoor electric grill, but that device broke. So the Weber seems to get hotter. The only thing I might change would be to dab a little butter right on the foil before placing the fillets down on it. Regardless, the fish came out buttery and delicious! Clean up was a breeze too! Ball up the foil and toss it away! Thanks so much for watching! Thanks especially for your kind critique! I really appreciate it my friend!

    Don't get much fresher fish than that eh! Looked delicious, as does most of your culinary creations...i do get a kick out of how you worry about your carb intake, then douse the fillets with a quarter pound of butter, lol. Another great episode John!

      Hi Jeff! Good to see you again! It's hard to believe that a recipe this easy could be so delicious but it is! I think science has now disproved the old hypothesis that saturated fat from butter is harmful. Yes, I do load on the butter. Been doing it for 15 years now. I lost 28 pounds and have kept it off. Here's a NY Times article reflecting current research: www.nytimes.com/2014/09/02/health/low-carb-vs-low-fat-diet.html Thank you very much for watching and for writing the great comment my friend! Hi Solocanoe! How do you like your Weber grill? I took this video a year and a half ago, and I still think of it as being brand new. I'm still learning to use it! Aren't bluegill a thrill to catch?! Plus, they bite so readily, you need wait only minutes, not hours! You are too kind! I'll try my best to keep the videos coming! Thanks so much for watching my videos, and thanks especially for the good words my friend!

    • @Motorcyclewindtherapy
      @Motorcyclewindtherapy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John -
      I do like my grill. I am coming off a much larger model with many burners, side burner, rotisserie thingie...I never used much of that stuff but my wife went along that day it was bought...and she was attracted to all the bells and whistles. We lost that grill to storm damage (and it was pretty rusted in the burners too).
      I still miss the old charcoal days of my plain ole Weber grill...but I admit it's easier and faster to use the gas grills...I suppose I'm not going back, haha! The littler Weber two burner is perfect for us now that we are empty nesters....I'm not cooking for a slew of our kids friends or anything like that. I have pounded a stake in the ground next to the concrete it sits on...and attached a chain to it - hopefully that will keep it tethered better in the next wind storm. (we live on the edge of Tornado Alley at the AR/OK border)
      Going fishing this weekend I hope - assuming the temps will stay up. Planning on using the simple 1/32 oz maribu jig set up and maybe have another pole with a Mepps Spin Fly rigged up...and THEN....I think Saturday or Sunday evening...I will be trying your Grill Frying method - it sure looks so good! :)
      Have a good day
      -john n.

    • @Juanelo1946
      @Juanelo1946  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again, John! (I'm John also! LOL!) We're empty nesters too of course so our gas Weber is just perfect, and I don't miss messing with the charcoal too much. 😉 I think the weather out your way should be great for fishing this weekend, nice and warm, but maybe a bit windy. I think you'll like the grill-fry method! I found it on line when the internet was new, and the site and even mention of the method seem to have disappeared. I whole-hearted approve of your strategy for catching fish this weekend! Light and ultra light fishing, at least to me, is a blast! Best of luck with both your fishing and cooking my friend!

      Hi Oscar!! I'll bet there are some ponds near you in West Texas that have even bigger bluegill than those in my lake. I've seen them in a magazine called Pond Boss which is published in Texas. Coppernose bluegill are native to Florida and Georgia, but they have been stocked extensively in Texas ponds and they are enormous! Thanks so much for watching and for leaving the great comment my friend! Good luck fishing!

    Been catching some those size at a nearby pond here in SE Ohio. Used nightcrawlers on a size 6 hook, 8lb Big Game on a 33-Plat spincast and medium Ugly Stik. Your video here looks like something the wife and son will enjoy; saved this for watching again.
    And yeah, have to watch the carbs also to stave off an eventual type2. It's hereditary, so it's in the mail. Rock on and God bless.

      Hi nocrust! Your photo is hilarious! 😁 I got a good laugh from it. Sounds like you know better than I do how to reel in those huge bluegill. I made a lot of bluegill fishing videos until I retired a few years ago. Those little critters sure produce tasty fillets. Good to see that you're carb conscious! I've been straying off the diet too much lately, and it shows in my expanding waistline. Thanks a million for stopping over and especially for leaving the good words! Hi Agnes! You're so nice! I hope you don't get too cold up there in Idaho! It get's a bit cold here too in northern Ohio! Maybe we can do some ice fishing this winter. I never know if the ice will be thick enough. Thank you for watching my shows, and thanks especially for the nice comment my friend!

      Juanelo1946 hello, it gets cold though for me but not enough for ice fishing during winter, l came from a warm country. I wish i will be given a chance to try ice fishing like Wisconsin, their river or lake really good on ice fishing crappie on winter as l have watched it. By the way, can i fish to your lake when i come to Ohio? I have niece in Toledo and how far from you. Enjoy your vid and i will try some of your cooking when i catch crappie next time. No crappie this summer for me. Thanks for your time.

      Agnes, I get a dozen requests a week to come to fish. I wish I could say yes to all of you but I can't. So, I have to decline everyone. Our place would soon become a public park instead of our private little family weekend getaway. I sure hope you understand. Thank you so much my dear friend! I hope you get a chance to ice fish in Wisconsin! That's a great state for ice fishing!

I wish you were a neighbor so we could learn how to use the new grill together! LOL! Thanks so much for the very kind comment my friend!

      Hi RiseAbove! The recipe almost seems backwards, or upside down, as you apply the butter to the upside! But, it works!! Wow, you're a cook at a seafood restaurant? Send me your recipes! LOL! Thanks so much for watching my videos! Thanks even more for the good words my friend!
