Honestly, there’s two sides to this tragedy that make it so horrific: the fact that Nancy saw her husband, who was an active man in his community and beloved by many, as a boring, quiet hermit demonstrates how little attention she paid to his personality in favor of her own problems. Dan, on the other hand, he no clue that his wife would eventually kill him for all of the selfish reasons he spent his whole life defying.
The horror of being married to a complete stranger for 25 years is very chilling to me.

But it's not actually true. Everyone who covers Nancy Brophy makes cracks like that, but a writer doesn't need to be a super star, New York Times Best Seller to be selling and be successful. I see plenty of evidence that Nancy was selling books and was somewhat successful and had a decent sized audience. But her success was getting a decent number of purchases to a world wide audience on Amazon. She was a dumbass to think that would translate to anyone coming to a local book signing. You can sell quite a lot of books online and still not begin to have the name recognition for a book signing, which is a whole nother level of success.

Chef Brophy was a very special man to so many of us. I was in the first night course of OCI back in 06-07. He wasn’t my instructor (he did substitute for one instructor I had in my second term for a week though.) but he was such a vital and present force in the school.
I could lament on so many wonderful parts of who he was even knowing him for such a short time. But his “Mushroom Dance” will always bring a smile to my face. My heart to everyone who was so much closer to him than I was, even from this distance his loss is felt tremendously.
I’m grateful you did this in such a respectful way and despite being so troubled listening to Nancy speak on this, I feel like there is some closure for me personally.

Her vocal tone and speaking style reminds me so much of Stephanie Lazarus, the police officer who murdered Sherri Rasmussen and then famously fell apart during her police interrogation about it decades later. They both have really similar vocal patterns, the same mannerisms of trying to appear helpful about giving tiny irrelevant details, stammering and appearing to performatively stop and think, while getting audibly anxious whenever they're questioned too closely about their story. it's just really striking.

The thing that always stuck out to me the most about Stephanie Lazzarus was her bizarre facial expressions, they were just so extreme.

Thank you so much for covering this story. Chef Brophy was my dad's teacher in 2003 and he continues to talk about him to this day. This story is heartbreaking. Chef Brophy did so much good in his life. He taught so many amazing students that went on to do amazing things. My dad currently owns two restaurants. When I was a kid my dad followed in his footsteps and became a culinary teacher as well. I love hearing my dad's stories about Chef Brophy and I'm glad he got the opportunity to study under him.
I cannot believe this comment did not get as much recognition as others! A lot of these stories I (three) listen to… It’s sometimes easy to forget their real and comments like this, at least LEAST one person claims to have known/ been linked , and it is ‘incredible’ to hear first hand how he affected others instead of just hearing ‘he was a great man’
I felt so bad for those that dropped out because of this , most probably altering their entire career choice .. understandably but I’m sure , in my opinion , he would have been much happier to watch over them succeed and carry on his legacy.. thank you so much for sharing🙏🏾

For any video about a criminal case, you need to take into account that each state has its own criminal code.

you can hear the defense team sighing on direct examination because she is not following the script and her questions don’t make sense anymore. the lawyer has to pivot on the spot which usually isn’t a bad thing but because she’s a rambler the lawyer had to choose her words extremely carefully as to not send her on a tangent that makes her look bad.
The worst part of all this is that it sounds like all she had to do was talk to him with sincerity and come clean about the debt.. he wouldn't have cared as much and would have likely just tried to get some money going. What a tragedy that she decided to take his life over such idiotic matters
And this is how a sane person sees it. But with someone like Nancy, she genuinely believed killing him was easier than admitting a fault, admitting she lied. The fact that people like her exist makes me ashamed to be the same species as them.
Thank you for covering this case so respectfully. You really spent some time researching how we felt about Brophy, he was a wonderful teacher and the world is truly worse off without him. I will forever remember his brophyisms and miss his chutneys. When we first walked into his class everyone was terrified of him because of how serious he looked, but God did he have the best joke delivery.
I'm truly sorry for your loss. It's always important to me to impart that the victim was a real person, with their own eccentricities, and all I was able to find about Dan was how wonderful he was to be around and taught by.

This is my second time watching this… very well done Dreading. The word “repulsive” is the best way to describe Nancy. She’s absolutely horrible and her lawyers were aggravating as well. The prosecutor (Overstreet) was amazing. I so very much enjoyed watching him outdo her… her smile disappeared and her eyes became very cold when he started to cut through her 💩.

Life isn't a poorly written romnace novel, it's life. You make your own adventures in the memories you make and the people you befriend.
Teavelling can be exciting, of course, but you don't need to go into debt and make your partner feel put-upon to do so.

He was close friends with my grandpa and was a father figure to my dad. Although not blood related, he was my uncle. My uncle was such a lovely person, I've always had low self esteem but he was the only adult who truly understand me and helped me become more confident person. The year my uncle passed, my grandpa had developed alzheimer's. He was so wonderful and helped us so much during this time. Only to be ripped from us by a women who I so disgustingly admired. Thank you so much for the respect you put into this video. To see comments about people who knew him, its so great to see that he was truly adored.

It truly baffles me how confident these people are. My ex took the stand in his own defense, and I’d say it was an absolute disaster considering he got 18 years. I rarely hear of defendants looking good and solidifying their “innocence” while on the stand.

I totally disagree with your assertion that the glass bathroom door exploding had to be "another attempt on his life". I have personally seen one of those frosted glass doors shattered just by being slammed a little too hard and they really do explode into a thousand tiny little pieces. He easily could have been upset and slammed it or slipped in the shower and fallen against it and that would have been the result.

@@Nai-robi0871 Well, they are glass-- it doesn't take a huge amount of force to break them and if it breaks at all, it is designed to completely shatter into tiny pieces because while the tiny pieces can give a ton of cuts, they will only be skin-deep cuts as opposed to a large shard of glass breaking off which will be even sharper and cut even deeper.
So if you are angry and slam a frosted glass door as hard as you can 'explode' really is a pretty good description for what happens.

Re: the shower door. It happened to a friend of mine. She got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and the shower door had shattered and was all over the floor. She lives alone in an apartment and it has been fine when she went to bed. I don’t think the shower door shattering in the case was a previous attempt. It’s not relevant to the case at all.

You left out the police body cam footage. Upon being told her husband was murdered, she said "yeah I figured, that's why everyone has that sad sack look". Then she said "it doesn't matter who did it and I don't wanna find out, he's still dead", completely unprompted. She's pretty inarticulate, which is a trivial flaw to have if you're not in a career where it's important (like say, writing, but even then some people write much better than they speak), but even having noticed that this stuck out to me too. I'm not even sure if she watched the tape back if she'd realize what she said isn't actually what any listener would be expecting; she reversed the wrong things in the second half but it probably sounded fine to her.
That was the first thing I noticed: she was pure strength and he was pure weakness from her point of view. She slipped up there, that statement was something that truly came out of her subconscious.

The glass door spontaneously shattering isn't odd. This happened to my brother in law and was a brand new shower door that just shattered with no one in it or near it. But I digress lol this case was very sad. I have a compulsive buying habit due to depression that really alters my life and has been a struggle stopping. But if this was causing major financial issues, I would get help rather than kill my husband. The thought of that moves me to tears bc I love my husband more than myself and the fact she did this despicable crime all because she didn't care to fix herself is just deplorable.

Thank you for covering this case. I was due to take Chef Brophy’s class next semester when it happened. Besides the life of a beloved teacher and father, a wealth of mycological knowledge was stolen from humanity the day Nancy decided to end Dan’s life. He was one of the MOST knowledgeable mushroom experts in one of the richest regions for mushroom growth on the planet. I was so sad never to have been able to take his class and go on his famed “mushroom walks” in the woods of the PNW. May he Rest In Peace.
Edited to add: I remember there was a candlelight vigil held in the parking lot in the days after his death. I found Nancy’s mannerisms, posturing, expressions and statements so off-putting but chalked it up to a woman in shock. Now I know why that was my gut reaction. What a monster.

This channel is so addicting. Most true crime channels are unbearable. Here, there is no annoying music, no flashy graphics. No god-awful dramatic re-enactments or excessively loud, crass sound effects. It's not a wannabe thriller movie. Just the pure unvarnished horror of human depravity. It just blows you away thinking that people actually DO these things. Often to those closest to them, at that! And then they actually think they can talk their way out. Unreal! I'm a writer, so I have interacted with other writers before. This lady's mentality of "I'm the smartest person in the room" is such a common thing with writers. They are also the worst at taking criticism cause they think they have everything figured out. It's no wonder she spilled her guts to her cell mate, a captive audience to listen to her writing bullshit.

If you've ever seen testimony from real victims, or real innocent people, their sadness is genuine. And especially if they have to talk about the death of a loved one, about the memories they had when they first learned their loved one had passed, it's REALLY hard for them to talk about. Really hard. It's enough to make you cry because you can see and imagine the pain they're feeling at that moment. I got none of those feelings listening to her talk about her husband. This lady is absolutely guilty. I'm glad her attorney decided to put her on the stand because she absolutely sealed her own fate here.

It’s so heartbreaking that the most wonderful people that are out there making a difference or doing something meaningful and care so deeply about others are the ones that end up losing their life. He deserved to live he had a life and a heart and an ability that we need more of in the world.
I watched the trial and honestly what I got from this trial was that Nancy in the end just enjoyed laying in bed staring off into space writing her books (which were never published but by herself) having her Starbucks delivered to her in bed and enjoyed spending great amounts of money on lunches with her "writer friends" and "writer getaways with her writer friends" and as well as wowing her writer friends with having them stay over at their home and having Mr Brophy slave away in the kitchen to feed them amazing meals.
WHILE poor Mr Brophy worked his butt off working two jobs.
Some people just don't know when they have it good. I would have loved to have had a husband like Mr Brophy and would have cherished him. Mr Brophy seemed to be an amazing person.

In actuality she came off as a pathological liar, fraudulent, self absorbed, deceptive, stand offish, condescending, extremely annoying and a horrible actor. Her defense attorney isn't professional and her defense was what Eminem did in the last rap battle in 8 Mile lol "if I tell the jury about all the dirt they are going to use on us first then they won't have nothing to say when it's their turn". It didn't work and I have a feeling her attorneys advised her not to testify but she wanted to be in the spot light and tell her life story to the world so bad she went against their advice and did it anyways.

As a fellow failed writer one of my biggest fears is my search history being used against me because ive researched some pretty wild stuff in my silly plots. I also dont respond in a 'typical' fashion to tragedy and people tend to confuse thst for a lack of caring. During a tragedy i dont break down, my brain hypercompartmentalized and i become ultra focused on the task at hand. This leads to members of the family tapping me to do the difficult stuff that requires higher thought. Then later on when I'm alone with my thoughts it all hits me like a freight train and i never show that side to people because i always feel like i need to be strong for others. What makes my pain more unique or deserving of special treatment than someone elses?
For instance my uncle is dying of pancreatic cancer so they tapped me to get his financials in order to see what kind of help we can get with medical bills. The process was like pulling teeth. I could easily see myself in a similar situation. People really overestimate how they think people should respond to trauma and really underestimate how shock affects everyone differently.

It sounds like you grew up with emotional volatile people that you learned how to comparmentalize and emotionally manage people and your surroundings at a very young age, and that you've done this for so long that it's well and practiced, and probably very much a part of your personality now. So, I don't know how successful therapy would be because your world view fits your survival scheme. But, I could be wrong. I don't know. I know this is possibly literally the least important part of this story, but it truly caught me off guard every time this woman- who clearly thinks she’s the smartest person in the room- would casually admit to doing things like driving and physically writing in a notebook at the same time without even a hint of self-awareness
did she? I got the impression she wants us to believe she drove around, parked and wrote, and she mentioned at one point someone looked sketchy so she moved her minivan. I think she took for granted that we would attribute the driving part to thinking/brainstorming and that she then parked, took out a notebook, and wrote.
obviously, this is all bullshit, she wasn't aimlessly driving around brainstorming/writing like this, she committed a murder and needed to explain why she was caught in her distinctive vehicle on camera. but if she weren't a murderer it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility to drive, ingest the surroundings, park and write. I think they didn't make that clear in her testimony because if she remembers parking at any other spot than one described, she has to remember where and when and they could potentially cross-check and catch her lying.
she thinks she's is the smartest person in the room for sure, but this may be a case of taking things to literally because we're on hyper alert now that we know she is lying.
She could be autistic undiagnosed; which is a common occurrence in crime.
