I lived in a small town for a year. One of the new fathers took their baby to preschool one morning. Usually the mother did it but that morning she couldn't. He ended up driving to work, forgetting the baby in the car. By lunch time when he spoke to his wife, he realized his mistake when she asked about their son. It was too late. That man ended up commiting suicide because he truly just forgot. I'll never forget that couple as long as I live. To this day, the wife is unable to move on. She stayed single and childless because of her PTSD and can't even hold a job. It's awful for everyone involved.

nah, she did not look like a grieving mother at the end when they let her in to see him. id walk straight in and start punching the shite out of him, even if it was deemed an accident. he's still in the same clothes , she's in her pathology scrubs, so its obvious she's come from work. AND what mother sees that on tv at hubbys work, figures out its their son and doesn't just go ballistic. the narrator did not describe that this was her behaviour when she got to his work and saw them watching it on the news. Then when she found out where it was and she supposedly ran from his work up the few blocks he had driven on his supposed way to the cinema, did the narrator say she was screeching in disbelief at the scene
He said ,as she approached, she then realised that it was indeed her son on the tv news but no description again of her loosing it. Also she commented to the day care teachers, after he didn't pick up her phone call, "he must have left him in the car". Remember ,at this point she has not gone to his work and seen the tv news, nor to the scene to see the police and taped off area. What made her mind go straight to the child being left in the car. ????? if I was her, I would have tried to imagine a million other scenarios before just jumping to that one, because she told police that even though he had shown her the tube videos of babies and animals left in cars two weeks prior, she never believed that he was planning to do that, so why did she just jump straight to that?????? toxic couples can both make grave decisions, its obvious the way she's holding him in that room, like she's his mother, she is co-dependent , and he is absolutely a narcissist. The fact she put up with his behaviour for so long, not including (so she says) all the actual infidelity ,is a sign of a person with codependence issues. and sometimes they will also do anything not to lose their partner. She says she was leaving, but who knows. Think about it. and im speaking from experience as someone having codependency issues. and just taking abuse to the max because the other option was to lose him and that was not an option to me. NO CHILDREN INVOLVED. and later I did have children at which point I was out of there but it still took me 11 months and literally myself and our baby being locked in a house in the middle of nowhere with no phone or escape, to finally break out when he left and run in 45 degree heat with my baby to a petrol station to ask for help. SO when it came to my child I did for 11 months keep him in a dangerous situation and his father hated him, he wasn't pretending to be a great dad, like this dude. and I've never forgiven myself for allowing that 11 months of self indulgence because anything could have happened, he was a hunter and I had already had rifle barrels pressed to my forehead and other crimes of domestic violence. So codependence is a strong emotion. JUST SAYIN.

Here's my long-winded hot take on this case. I want to preface this by saying that I have lost an infant child. I found my baby lifeless in his bassinet when I went to wake him for a nighttime feeding. He was 2 months and 5 days old. I can recount to you every single second of that horrible night - the 911 call, the feeling that the ambulance would never get there, the 911 operator walking us through infant CPR, my mother's scream as she did chest compressions, "there's blood coming out of his nose", me falling against the door as I screamed for my baby to wake up. I cannot fathom behaving even close to how Ross Harris did. There's shock, grief, disbelief, and the most crushing weight of guilt when you feel like you have failed to protect your baby. I have been in shoes quite similar to his, so watching his interrogation is physically sickening. I do, in fact, believe that some of the prosecution's affair evidence was inflammatory and they had more than enough reasonable suspicion he did this on purpose based on his Reddit history, his obsession with hot car deaths, and his p3d0phili@. My belief is that he decided to "test it out" but was operating with something akin to the logical fallacy, thinking it wouldn't actually work or, worst case, Cooper would be sick and he could be a hero for finding and saving him. What brought me to this, aside from what I feel was genuine disbelief that his plan worked on the first try, was him mentioning he even parked under a tree. This feels more like a sick experiment than an accident, and that's why he can tell himself it wasn't intentional. I do not and have never believed his wife had an inkling of the extent of what was going on. She struck me as a woman he had systematically broken down and convinced her that his shortcomings were her fault for not being/doing *fill in the blank*. He is a narcisstic child predator with no redeeming qualities. He is sick and deserves to be sentenced to the maximum extent of the law. I also hope that during his retrial they do not refer to his child exploitation as an extra marital affair again. That was predation and he undoubtedly caused lifelong trauma to his victims who were children and unable to consent.

I live in Arizona and worked in a children's hospital for over 12 years. Some of the cases that still haunt me to this day are those of children left in cars. In Arizona death from being left in an off car in the summer can take less than 5 minutes. I would teach in parenting classes to leave your wallet, purse, lunch, and/or work bag in the backseat before the baby was born to get you in the habit of checking the backseat. My mom also runs a daycare and call parents if they are 15 minutes late to drop off because her greatest fear is this happening to one of her daycare babies. I believe 99% of cases are pure tragic accidents but this case falls in the 1% for me. I truly believe he knew what he was doing. I've studied this case in all its detail and read all and every report. He knew what he was doing and did this purposely to his innocent son.

That’s great advice. Now they make car seats that have alarms. Vehicles can detect a car seat in the weight of an infant so if you leave your infant or toddler/child in the vehicle the car will notify you.

Before he was born I was paranoid something like this could happen to me, but him being a high maintenance kid I couldn't imagine it happening. The disgust of people who cheat on his social media account was to also sway his wife that he has such standards & would never cross that line. Always watch out for people who are trying to convince u they are a great person with morals who never do this or that. Those who are true don't feel the need to convince u of how great they are because their actions speak for it . People with agendas are the ones always patting them selves on the back trying to convince u and themselves they are great person Actions speak louder than words.

And the thought of a father doing what’s expected of a parent is different from what we’ve seen from media we think that this man is one of a kind when in reality he’s doing what is expected from a parent. Also probably cus when a father is seen with a kids one of two reactions we see in media is “He’s giving mom a break or that’s not his child”

Some of rhe biggest tells for me were:
1- The fact that he made such a big deal about them eating at Chick-fil-A. He wanted people to remember them being there & remember Cooper. So he could set up the accident by changing his normal route.
2- Him putting the light bulbs in the car at lunch. As has been mentioned already the smell would have been horrific & there's no way he wouldn't have noticed it at that point.
I think he was actually checking to see if Cooper was dead yet. Even if Cooper was still alive the smell of feces, urine & vomit would have been awful.
Disgustingly I think it's possible that Cooper was still alive at that point. So he of course "didn't notice" him in the car & call 911 then. If he was dead already I think he would have "made the discovery" then.
3- The fact he didn't notice the smell or see Cooper as soon as he got in the car after work. There's no way it took him that long to realize what happened.
4- The hot car video, searches he did on "a child free lifestyle" & telling people he wasn't happy being a married father. They were all done very shortly before the murder.
The porn, affairs & him talking to underage girls was absolutely evil & grotesque but it wasn't as big of a red flag to the case as the other things that he did.

I think Leanna defended him because she had misplaced subconscious guilt. If she had left this horrible creep earlier and absolved him of the responsibility of caring for Cooper, he might not have murdered their child. She can’t face that idea and so she went into deep denial that Ross could ever do such a thing.
Of course it isn’t Leanna’s fault, (and Harris might have murdered Cooper anyway to get out of child support, even if he didn’t have to perform regular childcare duties) but grief and denial do strange things to one’s mind.
Ross’s horrendous acting, his obvious lies about not seeing or smelling the corpse of his son during the drive between work and the mall, or when he went out to check on the progress of his grotesque “experiment” at lunch, his prior actions such as researching hot car deaths, and his inappropriate behavior throughout the case ( *complaining about the hot cop car?!* REALLY?!).

It's the returning to the car to place the light bulbs after lunch that clinches it for me. I am a rancher and have dealt with many dead animals in various stages of decomp. I am also a veteran and have seen and handled human bodies in various stages of decomp. While the smell is very distinct for any mammal while decomposing, the smell of a human being is just *more*.
By noon on 18 June 2014 it was 90 degrees F in Vinings GA, which means the car was 135 degrees F. Baby Cooper was probably dead by 11 am. When a human dies, there is an evacuation of the bladder and bowels. If Cooper had been dead for 2 hours when Justin placed the light bulbs in the car, the smell of urine/feces/decomp would have been horrific.
My opinion is that Justin intentionally left Cooper in the car to die. His reasons would have been #1-The fact that when he and Leanna divorced, Justin would be made to pay child support #2-He thought so little of Leanna as a woman and a human being that he wanted to hurt her in the worst way possible.

I haven't watched the whole film yet, but, being a true crime fan, I've watched various programs about this death. I always felt like the wife was in on it: they both wanted out of their boring marriage, and neither wanted to be saddled with a baby while they re-started their single lives. Her behaviour is very peculiar when she meets her husband who just - at best - 'forgot' their son in a hot car, comforting him, and seemingly not very concerned about her son. Furthermore, why was her first reaction when her son wasn't at daycare that her husband **must** have forgotten him in the car?! Really?! That was the default; that was the most likely explanation for this situation; that was the immediate place her mind went?!
He can't turn her in otherwise he has to admit that he planned this too, and he can never appeal his own sentence.

Let’s say another of your boundaries is when a date is always running late-they will purposely run late every time with some BS excuse to again, gauge your reaction to this.
If you like wearing makeup or fancy clothes, they will ask you NOT to wear makeup on your next date and to wear sweatpants instead of a nice outfit. And the date will be at a nice expensive restaurant where you SHOULD get dressed up.

If they notice you consistently making excuses for their bad behavior and still staying in the relationship, they know they’ve got you.

I've taken that call from a parent that accidentally ran over their child and the child did not make it as a result of their injuries and the mother was inconsolable! The baby died, I think he didn't spend more than three hours in there but it got hot enough. The dad made a tv appearance at some point, after being declared innocent, and said something along the lines of wanting to die everytime he saw the sun, feeling tortured everytime it was hot.He committed shortly after that, if I remember correctly, but in tv he looked like a carcass of a man. The adopted Dad left the baby in the back seat after the adoption went through. Russia made a huge deal because of some trade restrictions that the US enacted on them, people from the us are now not allowed to adopt Russian children in any cases anymore. They probably thought to themselves “Well us Russian are not going to the US to adopt children, they are coming here” and they really don’t have anything else that they can take away from us. It’s sad because even at the time there were restrictions on adoptions, Russia would let any children that were not disabled be adopted outside of Russia similarly to China so really they were only passing off what they thought of as problem children they didn’t want anyways.

In Italy you are now legally required to have an alarm system for your baby/toddler car sit (sorry I'm not sure how it's called in English). The reason is that if you ever happened to walk away from the car and forget your child inside, this alarms system would detect the weight of the baby and start blaring and also send an alarm to your phone, if I remember correctly. We have friends who have a little girl and didn't buy the alarm when the law passed, we scolded them for it because we thought it was a great thing that everyone should have... A few days after they were stopped by the police (in Italy random checks are legal and totally normal, they just stop as many people as possible for no specific reason and you are free to go in a few minutes, unless they find something),the officers saw the baby sit and checked it and fined them for not having the alarm and for not having their toddler properly strapped in. I think this is just a great thing, why would you risk it when you know it could happen? I mean regardless of how rare it is, why would you want to be the one person who loses a child like that? How could you ever forgive yourself?

My car has something similar built into it from the manufacturer (Buick).
It will chime several times real loud with a warning/reminder will appear on the dashboard screen telling you to look and check over the backseat as the sensors went off because something is in it.
Each of its seats have sensors up and down the whole bench that detects as soon as any weight is put on it. It’s so sensitive that I’ve even had an umbrella in it to have it chime and flash on my dash as soon as I put my car in park.
It’s something every single vehicle should have at this point. I know mine has the option to turn it off, with on as the default (I’ve never turned it off). It may only be a reminder, but it’s something that will at least help as there really is no excuse anymore for this stuff…

One was reacting to every movement inside the car and other just when you opened the door. I don't know anything about cars, so my memory might be wrong. Babies die every day. They aren't any more important than anyone else. Honestly, I'd say anyone who can do a needed service, like a electrician/plumber up to a rocket scientist/cancer scientist is MORE important than a baby/child because they already are valuable, a child can turn out to be a meth head or someone who drives slow in the passing lane. I'm not saying this kid dying in a hot car isn't an awful thing, but it isn't MORE awful than an adult dying. I've never understood why people are like "meh" to a 30 year old dying but a kid say 12 and under dies it's a huge tragedy.

Whether it’s a good life ended or a giant experience lost, one isn’t more valid to grieve than the others. Her daughter died in this accident and she knew it and I can still hear that tone in her voice to this day. It was so gut wrenching and you could hear her falling to pieces in those cries. I had to take the baby to my doctor’s appointment with me one day. He fell asleep on the drive. I’m sitting in the lobby and then yell “oh my gosh” at the top of my lungs and run out. I came back in with my little cousin and everyone was just staring me. It was not more than 5 minutes before I realized I left him. And I had been “on mom duty” for only a couple of days. I had so much guilt but he was fine. He was still sleeping when I got to the car. For everyone who truly has had this happen and it ends with the loss of a child, my heart breaks for them. Because it can happen. But in this case, this man wanted an out. And his poor child and the family who loved that little boy paid the ultimate price for the selfish evil this man inflicted. I received some great advice while pregnant that may help avoid forgotten baby syndrome, and I hope it helps some other parents: while expecting, or even before that, start putting an essential item in the back seat of your car. For example, your purse, your wallet, or if you have a push to start car, your keys. Something that you cant be without and would have to go back to the car for if you were to forget them. Do it for every time you drive. This will train you to check the back seat for your important items and make you feel like you are missing something if you dont check the back seat. Now that I have my son, I still cant imagine leaving him in the car, but Im thankful I started that habit so that I would be way more likely to notice if I walked away from the car without checking the back seat.

The idea is to train yourself with something, anything, that you are already accustomed to double checking and putting that in the backseat. Then when the baby is born, you are used to checking the back seat. The baby is absolutely important. The whole idea is to train the habit to check the backseat, which prior to having a child is not likely a part of one's routine.

I have hot car trauma. During the disastrous mass evacuation from Houston fleeing Hurricane Rita in 2005, the worst gridlock I’ve ever seen, hundreds of thousands of people clogged every road out of the city. It took us 32 hours to make what’s is normally a 4 hour drive to Dallas. Cars were running out of gas stuck in a traffic jam that covered all of Southeast Texas. People were keeping their AC off to conserve gas. We had our two dogs with us, and I could walk them up and down the freeway and back to the car without it having moved. We were desperately conserving water, not drinking it ourselves. Every gas station was out of gas and supplies.
Families lost their pets to the heat. I saw some dead pets abandoned on the side of the road. It was HORRIFIC trying to keep our babies from overheating, knowing that if we ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere, we were in danger of heatstroke as well as going through the hurricane in our car.
My husband was able to get the LAST gas from a station in Navasota, with hundreds of cars still in line behind us. There were emergency gas supplies being sent out across the state but they had trouble getting through the gridlock. The worst tragedy was a fire breaking out on a bus full of citizens from a retirement home.
Going through that very scary experience, with my dogs and with my then-boyfriend, showed me that he and I could get through tough situations together, and I knew I could marry him.
But the sight of those poor pets, and hearing about it on the radio, while struggling to keep my own puppers alive, will haunt my heart forever. Those 32 hours were a nightmare.

When they got back we loaded up all my stuff and my baby and they took me home. I went on to put all my baby's things away and get her crib ready for her when I noticed the car lights still in my driveway. For any parents that are ever in an emergency situation with their children and find themselves completely unable to perform CPR on them please know that is actually common. You are not a bad parent (or monster like this guy), it’s apparently normal to freeze up when it’s your child. Yes it's not uncommon at all! It's very natural.
I was in a very bad car accident with my mom when I was 20. She was driving and someone ran a red light and hit my door. My mom (thank god) was not injured but I was. My head was cracked open and I got glass in my eye - lots and lots of blood and I was screaming that I lost my eye. Luckily I did not, but I thought I did. My mom couldn't look at me because she was so scared. She said it made her feel sick to see her baby like that. There were plenty of witnesses and a registered nurse and her LNA daughter who were able to help me, but still, my mom feels a lot of guilt. It makes total sense to me, though - one time I thought my dog was choking and even though I know how to do the heimlich and CPR for dogs, I couldn't touch him out of anxiety. Luckily he was okay and not at all choking lol I just have OCD.

There is no way he wouldn't have noticed it getting into the vehicle and driving away. I just can't move past that, and the other stuff, like his cheating really becomes inconsequential. Might go towards motive, but it still comes down to the foul smell he supposedly didn't even take notice of. That one thing is the key to his guilt, in my opinion.

There are so many reasons based on Ross‘s behavior why I think he left Cooper in the car on purpose but the one thing that has me convinced is the fact that he must’ve seen him at 12:30 when he dropped the lightbulbs off in his car. Even if there was no smell yet (it’s heartbreaking to even type those words about poor little Cooper‘s body) he must’ve seen him trapped in his car seat. Texting that morning that he wanted a break from his son was definitely not the main reason why I think he did it, that’s just the icing on the cake.

Here’s what doesn’t make sense to me about Justin forgetting Cooper was in the car: he specifically went to Chick Fil A _with Cooper_ to have breakfast. That means he ought to have been thinking that after breakfast, he needed to take Cooper to day care before going to work. In order for this to be forgotten child syndrome, he would have had to forget about daycare almost immediately after leaving the restaurant, and without some kind of sudden, urgent situation to shift his attention, I don’t see how it’s possible.

    • @eangelillo
      @eangelillo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Justin and Cooper stopped at Chick-Fil-A for a “father-son” breakfast in the past, once in a while for a treat. Wasn’t the first time, just the first time he “forgot” to bring him to day care after. Enroute to work he had to back up car, and would have looked over his right shoulder and seen Cooper was still in the carseat. Pointed out on Matt Orchard’s video. Yep, makes no sense, because it was intentional.

    • @mommy2libras
      @mommy2libras 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

While it seems this guy did deliberately leave his child in the car, many people who have left their children in cars have changes to their routine specifically due to having the child with them that morning, or having them with them at different times/events in different order. Using your logic, that would mean that none of them could be forgotten child syndrome because their routine changed due to the child in the first place, which is simply wrong. And for some of those people, yes, it has happened in a relatively short time. It's called routine for a reason- you start it and go almost on autopilot. Even changes to that routine don't always snap you out of it, much of the time, you simply fall back on autopilot as soon as the change is over and the rest of the routine starts up again. I'm not sure what people think about how parents operate but it's pretty much never blocking everything else out to think about where your child is and what they're doing every second. These people aren't driving along saying "Bobby is in the backseat, Bobby is in the backseat, Bobby is in the backseat" over and over. They're thinking about driving and slightly further down, everything coming up to do that day- what they have to do at work, that another kid will have to be picked up late from school from an activity, stopping at the store, need to get the brakes checked this weekend, oh and don't forget so and so's birthday on Sunday, etc.

Agreed, and the fact that he literally said at the beginning of his interview that the daycare is right across the street from the Chick-fil-A that they frequent, just blows my mind! yeah and he had to turn left then chuck a uturnand drive right past the day care which was across the road from chick filee. like what, two three minutes, tops. not like having to drive to a different suburb with plenty of time to forget. I did it yesterday for takeout, was coming back from one suburb, decided I wanted takeout along the way then daydreamed all the way, ALMOST, to my home then went, oh shit, chucked a uturn and went back the way I should have gone to the takeout I wanted. and im 58, tired out of my scone on anti depressants and valium and always forget everything, but then remember within 10 minutes or so, kick myself and shake my head at myself. there's no way his head could have been anywhere else in a two/three minute drive AND its right flipping there.
