  • We're back with another EXCITING episode of Mineral Talks LIVE - Episode 73 in the series.
For this episode, we shoot off to Bethel, Maine to meet up with a man that everyone SHOULD know (in other words, if you don't know him, you really SHOULD become familiar with him).
Dr. Skip Simmons really has a lot of accomplishments under his belt. Skip is the Professor Emeritus at the University of New Orleans in Lousiana. He's ALSO a specialist in analytical mineralogy AND is the Director of the Mineralogy, Petrology and Pegmatology (MP²) Research Group at the University where they debunked the traditional belief that large mineral crystals take millions of years to form. That is pretty astounding!!!
Now he's the Director of the Maine Pegmatite Workshop in Bethel, Maine where he ALSO serves as the Research Director at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. He is co-author of the book Pegmatology, among others, and the author or co-author of the descriptions for 23 new minerals.
The mineral Simmonsite is named after him AND he was awarded the Carnegie Mineralogical Award in 2022.
So let's buckle up and chat with this crazy, fun-loving, awesome-shirt-wearing bundle of energy. Mr. Skip Simmons!!
