I think you did well for your first real time operating a backhoe. Glad you had the throttle cranked up. Move further away from the stump for bigger roots so they are easier to break. You can increase your break out force by curling the bucket and slightly boom down and stick out for stubborn roots. the weight of the machine and force from the stick along with changing the fulcrum point by doing this can often pop a stump right out. another trick is to get all the way under the root or stump so its near the bucket pin and now uncurl the bucket and stick in and boom up. this also greatly increases the prying action. I see a bunch of comments on more use of the thumb and i say use it less. it will make you a better operator. now put some hours on her!

The one thing that helped me learn to be smoother while operating a backhoe was a totally worn out 1969 Michigan machine. It was so sloppy that it was a real chore to put it into the same hole twice. Patience and 19 years of rebuilding and wearing out that same backhoe has honed my skills somewhat. I still hear that screamin' Detroit in my sleep.

You’re doing fine! Couple tips though. Try not to mix your soils. You won’t want any organic material under your new building, so peel it off first and keep it separate as much as you can. It’s hard, but set a high standard for yourself. The skills will develop.
Try to keep the bottom of the bucket flat at all times while digging. Peel layers about 4-6” deep in long level strips. Don’t drag the teeth, point them in the direction you are cutting. The machine won’t work as hard, and you’ll start to see an improvement in the cuts you’re making. Less ragged.
I came for the subscribed for the vintage stuff, but happy to tag along until you get back to it!

Nice job (for a so-called beginner), Toby ! You'd put many non full time operator's to shame with your skill.
Practice makes perfect. Thanks for your time to share the update & a peek at putting the new toy through it's paces. Look forward to the next installment. Happy Father's Day to your Dad !

For your first time you did pretty damn good!......I've been running excavator and other heavy equipment for 20+ years and believe me I was worse than you when I first started but with time I've gotten much better. An old timer told me an excavator/backhoe takes hours to learn and years to master, and that there are two types of people in the heavy equipment world, those who operate equipment and equipment operators. The only suggestion I'll make is throttle back a couple hundred RPMS, most situations you don't need full power and while learning it'll make the machine more responsive to your movements.

Excellent work digging those stumps out! Used to pull mine with a Ford 5000 and a big chain.
The internet is in a sad state where users feel compelled to explain that they are learning how to do something and were not born an operator.
Pro tip: It looks like you got a lot of soil off the roots as those stumps came out. If you'd like, pick them up and drop them a few times to get more fill dirt back from them.

Have you operated an L45 or L47 wondering if you could tell me the difference, I use to own a L45 great machine never felt I see powered. I think the only difference is that’s it’s a construction grade. And maybe it is more robust in frame material.

I think you did well for your first time. Getting know what each function takes the longest time. I ran escavators and back hoes bulldozers etc for over 15 years. The one thing the first timer has to be aware of is crowding the bucket into the soil after the bucket is full. This is the biggest culprit for driving dirt into the pins and wearing them out prematurely. When I was very young I was in the International Operating engineers union as an oiler on a 2460 Gradall. We used to get one hour a day running the machine. First whiooin I got was about crowding. Good luck, your on your way. :-)

Biggest thing to remember is that you have more leverage closer. So get as close to the stump as possible when you’re prying on it, and the machine will have better strength to pull it out.

You did good, my first attempt at running my BH was just that, an attempt. You may want to experiment with engine RPMs, sounded like it was running near red line. I found on my Kubota (B3030) I get maximum hydraulic oil flow at 1,800 RPMs, more RPMs doesn't increase the BH movement speed, just fuel flow.

Squatch mate you did a grand job, having a thumb attachment on the machine is a huge advantage as you already are aware, the next thing you need to buy is a ditching bucket and then you can practice your grading skills, there’s no room for criticism because anyone who has used a back hoe knows you never stop learning! Good job all round, a good investment and a great bit of kit, but I have a spare shovel in my shed if you prefer!! 😂👍

Makes a lot easier work than diggin them out by hand! My grandpa cleared ACRES with just a chainsaw, a shovel, and the Case SC. I have some good photos that I will put in a video at some point - waiting on archive footage to surface from a family member before I make the Case SC history video.... Anyhow- great video Toby, and the backhoe work was actually pretty good (but I have never run one either). Now you can just fill it all in and level it off with the front end loader. Done deal!

    Helpful tip.
Next time you do in this, leave 4 foot of tree on the stump. Drop the tree with your face cut like chest height. As high as you're comfortable with. You can even use the backhoe 2 direct it if you want. But leaving a few foot above the stump, gives more leverage, something to pry on, wont have to dig as much. 👍

If your receptive to some advice
I dig on both sides of tree and then back, but dump your bucket right back into the dig spot. Tree or stump will come out the same and grading can be smoothed with the back of the bucket.
    Again excellent job.

The front hydraulic hose sure looks like it could use the same stress relief and create a better flow with the turning of the brackets as per previous video.
I would suggest looking at the flow control adjustment on the rotate movement. Swinging left from a bucket drop was dang quick resulting in a jerky stop back to the hole.
    Good job digging.

My suggestion is specifically for digging out stumps. Rather then pull out the dirt one bucket at a time, reach out as far as you can, or want to, and drag a trench back to you. Pull out a bucket full only when you start to move yourself toward the ditch. This moves more dirt and breaks more roots faster, since your main goal is to get the stump out, not create a nice hole. I hope that explanation made sense. Practicing different methods is the best way to learn.

As anyone with any life experience knows, you learn by doing, I'm sure you are not too worried about someone hiding behind a keyboard criticizing you. Pretty soon you will be swinging, reaching and curling all in one motion. I learned on a John Deere 410D and it was slow going at first but i got the hang of it. It sure beats using a shovel and crowbar.

  • @morgansword
    @morgansword 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I read a few and everyone is a operator in their armchair but you did fairly good. Keep the throttle up and " break two levers at once to take the jerkiness out. Like lift with the jib or boom while making a swing action and things just go smooth right away. That little critter has more snuff than I first gave it but then being heavy equipment spoiled me. Like one guy said "don't depend on the thumb much. Use it when you need to but try ways of hooking roots or what ever and make the swing to smooth off the ground but a lot of machines don't have thumbs so try to wean yourself of the dependency and then when you crawl on other equipment you will look like you were born there. Once you get the hang of moving two levers or even same but do two things like curl and jib, you know what I'm talking about. I hate dealers too cause they always blame the operator and that is screwed

Nice work, try swinging the dipper to fill the bucket then the last step is to close the bucket. But don't swing the dipper in so far that you have to re-extend it to dump. You will get the feel for working at the right distance. I get to borrow a little GC from work much better than a shovel no matter how you run it.

Ya did a great job running the backhoe for the first time. Just a suggestion, you don’t need to run high rpms on the tractor. I believe anywhere between 1500 and 2500 rpms, you’ll have more control, and less jerking so to speak with the boom and bucket. Keep practicing!
