Thanks man learned some stuff. Wanted to say that while doing this today I realized that you don't need to use pliers or adjustable anything to get the cams to turn for timing alignment. You need to release the 2 forks and use them to pull the cams untill they are in position to put the bolts. Simple. No need to use anything else. Thanks and good job

Also for the people that want to change the 4 bolts per each Vanos wanted to mention that the torque for them is 6nm followed by 60 degrees angle. They are aluminum it seems though not 100% sure. I looked everywhere for the specs and they are not available.

Any suggestions, I am rebuilding an N55 engine and everything has gone fine until timing. I set everything TDC with special tools and torque down. But when I rotate the engine twice my camshafts are off 5-10 degrees. I can't find anything on as to why and how to correct it.

Hey man. I got a lifter tick in my n52 528i. Tried everything, bleed procedure, Ceratec, etc. Nothing fixes it. Everyone keeps telling me it sounds like lifter tick. But what you're showing here looks like something else. What would I need to replace?

I have a big turbo e70 n55 with 600hp died on me on the highway after destroying a scatpack on a 60 roll. If the exhaust cam seems fine but the intake cam has the barcode facing almost down when at TDC. I don't understand how this happened. The timing chain is tight the tensioner is new. The cam ajuster locking tool still fits?

Yeah, the bolts on the valve cover do like to pop. When I did mine two bolts snapped, and one valve cover stud popped as well. So annoying. That’s always seems to happen with me though. I don’t know if they’re all just that weak and old, or if I’m that heavy handed. I should really invest in a good torque wrench I suppose the one I have sucks and doesn’t work well.

I'm loving this build. I eagerly await each follow-up video. Good news, Nathan. I bought me a little 1/4" drive Makita like yours. Works great. My girlfriend blew the head gasket in her Neon, and I had to fix that, plus all the extra "while I'm in here/since I already removed it, might as well get a new one" stuff. As payment for that ordeal I made her buy me a 1/2" drive Makita to compliment my other one. I think she paid like $320 ish for that one. I had to let her borrow my e38 while I fixed her Neon. Finally got my car back. Now when it cools down I can fix that clunking suspension.

@@NathansBMWWorkshop she tries to put me on that plan, but I say "you're living here rent-free." Wash my laundry and feed me and I'll do regular maintenance. You blow that head gasket by not checking and adding coolant (this was completely preventable) and that'll cost extra.

Thank you so much for this video Nathan!
You mentioned that hydraulic valve adjusters tick (or in my case clunk) when the oil pressure drops because of warn out cam journals?
Mine cluncks when its cold, after it warms up engine purrs nicely.
Do you think it is because of the warn out cam ledges/journals?
I was gonna pull the top off to replace the hydraulic valve adjusters as BMW calls them.
So, you think that's not gonna fix the problem?
My car is 330i, year 2005.
    What do I do?

Nathan, is there a way to do a VANOS rebuild on this engine? Does it have the internal 2-ring sealed pistons? The few pictures I've seen make it look like a 'vane-type' pressure system; ie, more like a power steering pump than a piston setup.

It might be late, but here it is.
7Nm, wait 30min, recheck 7Nm and then 90° turn Z pattern retightening sequence.
Mark each bolt as you do additional angle, so you don't do it twice (very, very easy to do this mistake).
Calibrate eccentric motor at the end by pressing the ignition button, BUT DI NOT START THE CAR.
Eccentric motor will learn the limits.

Many thanks to you Nathan, you really bring some clarity about what is involved in timing the N52. I have a question about the removal/installation of the exhaust cam. I see on the internet a "special" toolkit for the exhaust camshaft which contains fixtures that hold the upper and lower bearing ledge parts as well as a piece that pushes down a set of valve spring to release tension on the cam lobes. I didn't see you using any tools like that so I take the exhaust camshaft can just be removed/installed without this "toolkit"? Thanks again, cheers.

To answer my own question after doing the job if anyone is interested, no you don't have to calibrate the motor.
It does it by itself, as long as you don't start a car, just press the ignition button, but don't touch brake pedal.
Motor is supposed to start, go all the way up, return back and remember limits.

I have a HUGE question!? This guy clocked my timing without “locking the motor” whatever that means, and now my car won’t start and and makes a really bad noise in motor. I took it to a another mechanic and he said my valves one or more we don’t know, could be bent. Is that true? The valves can bend in the N52 motor? ⁉️⁉️⁉️ It’d mean a lot of you responded and told me if the new mechanic is right and if anyone else knows the answer please let me know! THANK YOU 😃
