Love this shifter. Btw for the people asking for more resistance in the shifts, it actually has built in option to do that (it can get quite stiff actually). Not sure if it was mentioned in the video. Anyways, there is a small hole on the left side of the aluminum body (left side of 1st gear). You can then use a flat head screw driver to tighten a screw inside the hole, which increases resistance in shifts. Hope this helps

There is the option to turn this into a ebrake in the settings when on pc when you toggle the analog switch. I’ve used this for a bit before getting an actual ebrake. I also got a ricmotech short throw shifter kit last week and there’s a noticeable difference on shift feel and I feel much quicker shifting gears in assetto corsa
I love mine, never have had a problem with and works just the way I expected. Feels built very well also. I’ve had mine for probably 4 years now and have had no problem.
I've had my TH8A for a while now and I love it. It's got quite long throws in H-pattern mode, so you might not be able to shift as fast as with the Fanatec shifter or a sequential stick/paddles, but I find that's actually a good thing for trucksim, which is what I use it for most of the time anyway. Something that you didn't mention is that the shift knob can actually be screwed of and the threads are somewhat standard so you can change the shift knob to a "real" car shift knob, if you want to. Or maybe even a shifter extender.
The TH8A is definitely one of the best shifters out there. I think random callsign still uses it despite him having full fanatec gear, shows you how good this thing is. Amazing review!
It's really not. I got a shifter from china for €60 and it's 10x better than the TH8A. I paid €100 for my TH8A on Amazon a few years ago and they now sell it for almost €200.
I had one briefly and it was pretty shit. To switch it over to SQ you need to take the shift knob off, find the allen key, undo the 4 bolts, remove the plate, have the other plate stored somewhere to put on, then tighten the bolts, and put the knob back on. And the shifting action just doesn't feel very good in either setup. It distinctly felt kind of cheap. I got a Fanatec instead, the shift tension is adjustable, though it requires an allen key, but to switch to SQ you just flick a switch. It also comes with 2 machined shift knobs. Though just like everything else the price skyrocketed. Pretty sure I bought it for ~$150, it's now $250. I'd recommend not getting either right now. If RC has the Fanatec shifter the only reason I could think of for him using the TM one is it's smaller and easier to mount. That's the only advantage it has.

Bought mine about 7 years ago for $150. Still going strong to this day and I have done nothing to it. Haven't checked the grease or anything. Went to the auto parts store and bought a cheap universal tall shifter knob for it and threw it on for using it as a hand brake.
had mine for almost 2 years now and my only complaint is that the threads on the clamp got very worn out after about a year of usage because I have to unscrew it and move it everytime I used my sim which led to it being impossible to stick to my desk in the end. The good news though is that I contacted thrustmaster customer support and I got a new clamp for free because of my warranty.
Thats one big plus of getting it. They seem to stand behind thier products unlike those USB shifters on ebay and trying to ask a seller for help a year later..
In mine I had to block the 7th gear, going from 6th to 5th or from 4th to 5th it could happen that the stick would go in the 7th slot. And also reduced the gap to insert the Reverse so that you would need some extra force to insert the Reverse.
0:54 logitech made 3 shifters. the shifter for the g25 (that had buttons and manual/sequential switch) the one for the g27 (that was the same but removed the manual/sequential switch) and the one now that was restyled but has now no buttons and no sequential/manual switch. that means that they downgraded their shifter
bro they are 90% the same, mechanism and insides are all the same, the g25/g27 shifters had buttons because they had no space left on the wheel to add them, as soon as the g29/920 came out, they ditched the buttons and left it the same as always
I bought the aliexpress h pattern for $75 and love it. Came with a sequential 3d printed add on too. It’s all metal and feels so good. Has the groves for shifting smoothly too.
I honestly think it's a great shifter not for it's 200 dollar price but it also feels way more realistic than other shifters like the logitech. What I like most about it is that you can adjust it to a desk
I got this shifter along with the th t500 and fanatec clubsport v2's for free from a very kind guy last week and it's amazing how much better it feels than my old logitech momo
This shifter will be worth buying for another 10+ years, maybe even longer. Arguably one of the best gear box shifters for the price right now, quality feels like the real thing. If you find you're shifting has gotten a little slower just swap out the shaft for a shorter one :) The sequential plate is great too, but I find using the paddles on the wheel are best for competitive racing, and the shifter is an absolute pleasure to use when messing around with the boys. 10/10 shifter I got 0 complaints at all. it's an absolute workhorse and doesn't break either.
@@Soundwave-F7Z I'd say sort of dude, I already knew how to drive stick but my gf had no clue and she got the hang of it with practice. If you wanna practice stick the best game for it was GRID. There's a setting where if you don't clutch properly the car will stall, which is basically the most important part of learning stick Forza horizon is good for steering mechanics, but not really for gear switching and accelerating, although it is a lot of fun. We found GRID to be much more of a challenge for new manual drivers
SHH Shifter is miles ahead in terms of feeling and can switch between H-Patern and sequential in 5 seconds. Also costs almost half the money. Only for PC though.
5 seconds doesnt it have 4 screws, I like the TH8A but changing between modes is bit of a pain I was thinking of getting the Clixbeetle-GT Tactile Feedback Mod
@@foaley77 nope, push the shift knob down and turn to the right 90° plus a switch on the side and you're good to go. Replacing the shift face with those 4 screws is optional.

I have it. Very nice shifter, tad expensive. My only complaint is the length of the throw. I have it directly plugged into my T300RS, not sure if there's any way to shorten the throw. But it's not likely to bother me either. Basically just nit picking. . I just need a hand brake and the basics are covered. Of course, still waiting on the SF1000 to drop down to somewhat normal prices.
I bought a used T300RS and T3PA-Pro pedals, so I wanted to stick with TM so got a new TH8A shifter and TSS handbrake/sequential, but it ended up close to $900 CND, almost twice as much as the wheel and pedals. But I love it, and even though the shift knob was nice, I replaced it with a black with red writing 7-R knob that makes it my own. I do have plans to modify it so you don't have to pull it apart to change it to sequential, but looking for a used (preferable damaged) one to salvage parts.

I'd just like to had to not forget to lube up the clamp mechanism, cuz it WILL wear out over time if you mount it and unmounted too often. Also the stiffness screw can round pretty quickly since it's made of plastic so also be careful with that. Still a great shifter though
He said that the shifter comes with a usb cable that you can use, does it work if you directly plug it into a Xbox one? Using it for forza horizon 5 for example
You should check out the SHH Newt, I hear it feels better than this and is just a good bit of kit all around. Also maybe someday you should grab an ebay shifter, I run one and it feels good but is a headache because it falls apart every 10 days or so.
hi can anyone help bit late to the party as they say im having one of these delivered tommorow 18/10/2022 i have a thrustmaster tgt and on the back of the hub i already have the load cell pedals plugged in and also the sparco handbrake / sequential shifter plugged in which im using as a handbrake and ordered the TH8A shifter to be used as a sequential shifter but theres no spare port on back of tgt hub to plug in so how can i overcome this ?? thanks in advance Terry

I use the nox 3D mod on mine which I think is quite good. Random callsign did a video on it. I got the mod from eBay ages ago and it’s still working well.
I tried the Fanatec sq shifter and cant go back to TH8A, but I'm using TGT2 atm so I don't think there are alternatives to this. Hopefully Thrustmaster release a new shifter targeting to at least SQ.
Great review! I'm thinking of getting into sim racing and been looking at this shifter and the t300RS GT. Seems to be a big setup choice for many! What game are you playing throughout the review? I don't recognize it.
I'm expecting mine to be in in a few days, and I'm wondering from your experience using this shifter, are mis-shifts common? The h pattern shifter I use is super difficult to handle at times and accidentally shifting into reverse is commonplace for it. Just hoping that isn't the same for this one.
Can i buy that plate anywhere to have the shifter and handbrake? Basically nobody on youtube that ive been going through with all their reviews even has a handbrake or explains if their setup can have one
In real car with manual transmission the gearbox wont let you change gears unless you press the clutch pedal down. I guess this is not possible to replicate in sim racing with this gear right? So how does the game/shifter solves this when it detects that clutch is not preseed? Do you physically change gear on shifter but not in game because clutch was not pressed? Thanks :)
I have a question to you because there are no fitting videos out there. I currently own the Ferrari 458 Italia wheel that was official for PC and Xbox360, and was released alongside FM4. I really like the look of the Thrustmaster TH8A gated-shifter, but I can't decide, what wheel I should buy with it. I have about 500 bucks for the wheel and pedals alone, so could I have a recommendation for that?
It won’t be able to connect directly to the HORI wheel. If you’re using it on PC, you could plug it it directly via USB to your computer and use it like that.
@@UnkieRick in a normal 6 speed, you push left + up/down for 1st and 2nd, just up/down for 3rd and 4th, and right + up/down for the last 2 gears with 8 gears, it kind of seems like it requires more fine motor control^^
@@mattBLACKpunk that's right, but you get used to it quite fast. the position of the shifter helped me a lot: the 1-2/3-4/... slots shouldn't be paralell with you legs but pointing outwards a bit, with your shoulder being the starting/reference point instead of your elbow
@@mattBLACKpunk I see well it is a gated shifter with the teeth angled so ot is easier to get into gears and not misshift i have the shifter and upgraded to fanatec css shifter. Would definitely recommend comparing prices of the two depending on where u live the css is just way better.
hey I have a question. in the games I tested, I can shift with the TH8A without using the clutch. Why does TM put a clutch pedal in when I can just shift without one? Are there any games that support the clutch?
Can I use this shifter with any wheel? I mean, it can plug into a USB port, so I'd like to use this with the new Logitech DD wheel, but have no idea if the game will see both the shifter plugged into the console (xbox sx) AND the wheel.
Hey, just a question about the th8a shifter. I have a wheel stand and want to hard mount the shifter. How do I hard mount the shifter and are the nessesery screws included or will I have to get them Elsewhere? Any help is appreciated 👍
Assuming your wheel stand comes with a shifter plate, you’ll be able to hard mount the TH8A onto it (first you’ll have to remove the table clamp that comes with the shifter). All screws needed to hard mount the shifter should have come with the wheel stand.
I race a lot of Group C cars and from what research has told me was they didn't use H shifters (makes sense). Would it be more authentic to use it in the sequential setup for late 90s Group C and Formula cars?
No, it's not. Back in the day it was absolutely worth the £90-110 asking price. Now, though.. £170?! Not in the slightest. There are plenty of better options available. You can spent half as much and get an SHH or an Aliexpress shifter which are both better, or you can spend about £30 more and get a Fanatec SQ1.5.
100% worth it IMO. In this H pattern price point you won't get a super realistic gearbox feel anyway, but I really like the build quality of this, combined with all other features it has and modding capabilities - it seemed like a no-brainer for me... Don't regret getting it, really.
@@guy5828 there's no warranty, and the build quality is good, no complaints. Most of the materials used is metal which makes it feel sturdy. Most importantly though, the shifting feel is really stiff and solid, and it has handled months of very hard shifting and still works. And then there's the price, where its cheaper than the g29 shifter but better than the th8a imo. It comes with 7 speed and a little plastic piece to slide on and convert it to sequential very easily. I'm pretty sure there's also a truck shifter option. Love this shifter. One note tho is that the shifter can make some loud noises so you'd have to get some padding to quiet it down.
@@OCRacing yeah I have it tightened all the way and it still does it. It's annoying but I deal with it cause I like shifting with the base of my palm. That's the only thing I've noticed other than that you can adjust gear tention in the side so it's a great shifter and I like that it's customizable but I like the look of the logitech one cause it's got a shift boot. I bought one off a guy who owns a ps4. This shifter plugs into my t300rs but the pc doesnt reconize it. If do the same thing on my ps4 it works. Man this really really pisses me off. Anyone know where to find the adapter.
Do you have the adapter that allows this shifter to plug into PC via USB? If so, you also need to download the TH8A drivers on the Thrustmaster website for it to be recognized.
Hey OC, I have a very important question for me, I am trying to get into sin racing, never had a wheel, still don't, I will be buying a pc soon (hopefully) and I want to try to get a wheel and pedals etc, because we'll i also want to learn how to drive and this not only teach me but also make me more confident when sitting in a multy thousand dollar piece of metals, liquids and other materials, so I want to know, what should it get? I may start getting into Sim racing more, but in my country thrustmaster isn't very popular, and my budget is tight, but my family prefers buying things once and buying them right than having to change, so what do you think I should do? Buy a thrustmaster from wherever I can and stay with the kinda bigger price and a cheaper shifter so I can upgrade later, or go for Logitech and have to change later on? If there is any other solution like maybe it can be used with Logitech I will gladly hear it.
I could also buy Logitech stuff and slowly buy myself into thrustmasters stuff, actually I think that's the best option if I buy Logitech I can start using it immediately because well. It's cheap and entry level, then once I've saved I can start buying thrust master stuff, like a new wheel and stuff, maybe even upgrade to a t300, yeah I'll do that, sounds better, don't have to worry as much.

Greetings. I am considering this with the Thrustmaster T300 RS GT. Two questions are, will that wheel work with PS5 and GT7, and will this TH8 be too tall and bother my peripheral view when mounted on the same table/height as the wheelbase and the tv? Also, I wonder if GT7 will correspond with real life-cars, in terms of numbers of gears, so that a car really having 4 gears, does not have 5 in game. I hope these questions can be answeared. Thanks in advance to anyone answearing.
Hey 👋 The T300rs GT will work with PS5 and GT7. I’ve never used the TH8A on a table, but I don’t think it’ll have an impact on your peripheral view! It’s not insanely big. Most modern racing games do a great job imitating all types of cars. Thus, this will correspond to its gears as well. Cheers :)

I know I drove GT4 with Logitec Driving Force Pro, having no clutchpedal, and a fixed up/down-gearstick that is noicy. Not cutting it anymore. I wish to change side of gearstick depending on the car. Regardless, business first.

I've had my g29 setup for 5 years now- and I'm finally getting this shifter. I'm so excited. I like thst I can manually tension it

Might be a bit late now, but try to use some sort of grease, I use driveshaft grease to reduce wear on my clamps, hope this helps someone :)

@@foaley77 nope, push the shift knob down and turn to the right 90° plus a switch on the side and you're good to go. Replacing the shift face with those 4 screws is optional.

I have it. Very nice shifter, tad expensive. My only complaint is the length of the throw. I have it directly plugged into my T300RS, not sure if there's any way to shorten the throw. But it's not likely to bother me either. Basically just nit picking. .
I just need a hand brake and the basics are covered.
Of course, still waiting on the SF1000 to drop down to somewhat normal prices.
5 month late reply, but you can buy custom cnc machined top piece. I bought one with shorter throw… and its as easy to install as unscewing 4 bolts.
I bought a used T300RS and T3PA-Pro pedals, so I wanted to stick with TM so got a new TH8A shifter and TSS handbrake/sequential, but it ended up close to $900 CND, almost twice as much as the wheel and pedals. But I love it, and even though the shift knob was nice, I replaced it with a black with red writing 7-R knob that makes it my own. I do have plans to modify it so you don't have to pull it apart to change it to sequential, but looking for a used (preferable damaged) one to salvage parts.

I'd just like to had to not forget to lube up the clamp mechanism, cuz it WILL wear out over time if you mount it and unmounted too often. Also the stiffness screw can round pretty quickly since it's made of plastic so also be careful with that. Still a great shifter though
This is still solid choice for tabletop simracer. I have two of these serving as sequential and handbrake on table.

You should check out the SHH Newt, I hear it feels better than this and is just a good bit of kit all around. Also maybe someday you should grab an ebay shifter, I run one and it feels good but is a headache because it falls apart every 10 days or so.
A few people have commented on the SHH shifter… might have to take a look at it 👀

hi can anyone help bit late to the party as they say im having one of these delivered tommorow 18/10/2022 i have a thrustmaster tgt and on the back of the hub i already have the load cell pedals plugged in and also the sparco handbrake / sequential shifter plugged in which im using as a handbrake and ordered the TH8A shifter to be used as a sequential shifter but theres no spare port on back of tgt hub to plug in so how can i overcome this ?? thanks in advance Terry

I use the nox 3D mod on mine which I think is quite good. Random callsign did a video on it. I got the mod from eBay ages ago and it’s still working well.

In real car with manual transmission the gearbox wont let you change gears unless you press the clutch pedal down. I guess this is not possible to replicate in sim racing with this gear right? So how does the game/shifter solves this when it detects that clutch is not preseed? Do you physically change gear on shifter but not in game because clutch was not pressed? Thanks :)

It won’t be able to connect directly to the HORI wheel. If you’re using it on PC, you could plug it it directly via USB to your computer and use it like that.

@@UnkieRick in a normal 6 speed, you push left + up/down for 1st and 2nd, just up/down for 3rd and 4th, and right + up/down for the last 2 gears
with 8 gears, it kind of seems like it requires more fine motor control^^
@@mattBLACKpunk that's right, but you get used to it quite fast. the position of the shifter helped me a lot: the 1-2/3-4/... slots shouldn't be paralell with you legs but pointing outwards a bit, with your shoulder being the starting/reference point instead of your elbow

@@mattBLACKpunk I see well it is a gated shifter with the teeth angled so ot is easier to get into gears and not misshift i have the shifter and upgraded to fanatec css shifter. Would definitely recommend comparing prices of the two depending on where u live the css is just way better.

Yes. Almost all games support the clutch. You can turn it on or off in the settings of most games.
In gran turismo u need to have the manual transmission part, not the racing one

Hey, just a question about the th8a shifter. I have a wheel stand and want to hard mount the shifter. How do I hard mount the shifter and are the nessesery screws included or will I have to get them Elsewhere? Any help is appreciated 👍
Assuming your wheel stand comes with a shifter plate, you’ll be able to hard mount the TH8A onto it (first you’ll have to remove the table clamp that comes with the shifter). All screws needed to hard mount the shifter should have come with the wheel stand.

I race a lot of Group C cars and from what research has told me was they didn't use H shifters (makes sense). Would it be more authentic to use it in the sequential setup for late 90s Group C and Formula cars?
No, it's not. Back in the day it was absolutely worth the £90-110 asking price.
Now, though.. £170?! Not in the slightest. There are plenty of better options available. You can spent half as much and get an SHH or an Aliexpress shifter which are both better, or you can spend about £30 more and get a Fanatec SQ1.5.

This is the only h-pattern shifter currently offered by Thrustmaster
100% worth it IMO. In this H pattern price point you won't get a super realistic gearbox feel anyway, but I really like the build quality of this, combined with all other features it has and modding capabilities - it seemed like a no-brainer for me... Don't regret getting it, really.

@@guy5828 there's no warranty, and the build quality is good, no complaints. Most of the materials used is metal which makes it feel sturdy. Most importantly though, the shifting feel is really stiff and solid, and it has handled months of very hard shifting and still works. And then there's the price, where its cheaper than the g29 shifter but better than the th8a imo. It comes with 7 speed and a little plastic piece to slide on and convert it to sequential very easily. I'm pretty sure there's also a truck shifter option. Love this shifter. One note tho is that the shifter can make some loud noises so you'd have to get some padding to quiet it down.
I have one problem and one only. I palm shift which causes my knob to unscrew as i shift.

@@OCRacing yeah I have it tightened all the way and it still does it. It's annoying but I deal with it cause I like shifting with the base of my palm. That's the only thing I've noticed other than that you can adjust gear tention in the side so it's a great shifter and I like that it's customizable but I like the look of the logitech one cause it's got a shift boot. I bought one off a guy who owns a ps4. This shifter plugs into my t300rs but the pc doesnt reconize it. If do the same thing on my ps4 it works. Man this really really pisses me off. Anyone know where to find the adapter.
Do you have the adapter that allows this shifter to plug into PC via USB? If so, you also need to download the TH8A drivers on the Thrustmaster website for it to be recognized.

Hey OC, I have a very important question for me, I am trying to get into sin racing, never had a wheel, still don't, I will be buying a pc soon (hopefully) and I want to try to get a wheel and pedals etc, because we'll i also want to learn how to drive and this not only teach me but also make me more confident when sitting in a multy thousand dollar piece of metals, liquids and other materials, so I want to know, what should it get? I may start getting into Sim racing more, but in my country thrustmaster isn't very popular, and my budget is tight, but my family prefers buying things once and buying them right than having to change, so what do you think I should do? Buy a thrustmaster from wherever I can and stay with the kinda bigger price and a cheaper shifter so I can upgrade later, or go for Logitech and have to change later on? If there is any other solution like maybe it can be used with Logitech I will gladly hear it.
I could also buy Logitech stuff and slowly buy myself into thrustmasters stuff, actually I think that's the best option if I buy Logitech I can start using it immediately because well. It's cheap and entry level, then once I've saved I can start buying thrust master stuff, like a new wheel and stuff, maybe even upgrade to a t300, yeah I'll do that, sounds better, don't have to worry as much.

Two questions are, will that wheel work with PS5 and GT7, and will this TH8 be too tall and bother my peripheral view when mounted on the same table/height as the wheelbase and the tv? Also, I wonder if GT7 will correspond with real life-cars, in terms of numbers of gears, so that a car really having 4 gears, does not have 5 in game. I hope these questions can be answeared. I’ve never used the TH8A on a table, but I don’t think it’ll have an impact on your peripheral view! It’s not insanely big.
Most modern racing games do a great job imitating all types of cars. Thus, this will correspond to its gears as well.

I know I drove GT4 with Logitec Driving Force Pro, having no clutchpedal, and a fixed up/down-gearstick that is noicy. Not cutting it anymore. I wish to change side of gearstick depending on the car. Regardless, business first.

If you’re on PC, yes it will work. You’ll plug the shifter in via USB and bind everything in game.

Well the logitech shifter is the same shifter that was on the G25 which came out in 2006 except that one had more features then the modern one.
