The boulevard is one of my favorite things about Dumaguete. Early morning health conscious crowd walking, Zumba, stretching, etc… Then the evenings are wonderful. Families and kids playing, music and street food! Such a great vibe!
Me and my wife are planning a trip to the philippines early next year. And really thinking of selling our farm here in the states and moving there by 2026. It would be nice to say hi to you guys while were there. Thank you for your videos, they have been very helpful.
I Agree after starting in Cebu (IT park) and two best friend in Talisay and Mactan I ended up coming permanently to Duma and am living in Valencia near the market in new bldg for $20k peso with all American amenities. Hardly encounter other expats unless i want to or by some small chance when at the market or down on the Blvd. I spend 90% of my time with Filipinos and Girlfriend and her extended family who are Very established as her Dad is on Barangay (Robinson mall district) so even hanging with them i meet other councilmen, the Mayor and local businessmen. Vet your girl and her family as you Can meet a Quality Filipina as most only see videos which Don't give the Full picture of Living here. I still travel around once a month to other locations but Overall it's a Great Place; as I never originally thought i would end up here as I thought Bohol or even Cebu area but never say never till you visit. It is what you make it and figure out what you want from town you live in and don't settle.
I look forward to following your trip Gio. My wife grew up in Dumangas, Iloilo so we've been to the city numerous times, and have also taken the ferry to Bacolod probably 5 or 6 times from the port of Dumangas. We'll be heading for the family home for a month around Christmas, and I'm kind of looking forward to that. I call San Fernando, Pampanga home though. Just as a bit of an afterthought there is a place up near Bacolod you may want to visit at some point called "Campuestohan Highland Resort" that's surrounded by beautiful scenery. Pretty unique resort too and not that bad for cost.
Hi 👋 Gio. Great video about the 5 good reasons to make Dumaguete your retirement place. I agree 👍 with all of your 5 reasons. I would maybe add one more reason,..has "they say"... DUMAGUETE,..FRIENDLY PEOPLE PLACE. Question ❓ With all the new and more "upscale " places and shops opening up in the Dumaguete area,.. wouldn't it be fair to say that the prices of house rentals and other things are going to start going up in price soon ?!?...Just a thought 🤔 Also,..love your motorbike and really like the "add ons" that you have put on it,..it really makes it look cool and at the same time functional. Thanks and I'll see you when you reach and film your destination of your motorbike trip.
Great off the cuff, yet informative and well presented video, Gio. Thanks, I'm coming for an exploratory visit to Negros Oriental in two months, retired from teaching in California. Also interested in volunteer activities too. ( am also a building contractor and would like to utilize my skills to help the community out ) Another winner vid!
I just got back to Michigan… I was in Dumaguete for a month with my girlfriend who lives there. I’m moving there in February as I will retire. I’m excited about the Anytime fitness, which is an American company. Look forward to getting back. Great video.Gio … I love Dumaguete and I was in Bayawan and Basay for several days as it was my girlfriends daughter’s birthday she just turned 1 years old…. So we had a big celebration with the family at the beech
Really good vid. Agree 100% with everything you said. Like the bike setup! If I ever moved to PH it is where I would base myself. I think the hospitals there also aren’t too bad.
I have a 2019 Aerox. Up grades. Over size rear tire (150/14-under size front tire-100/14). Side skirts, mini driving lights, custom seat, custom exhaust, JVT cvt kit, rear disc brake conversion. I put on a crash guard but did not like it--removed it. Also installed hazard lights. Top speed--120 km per hour. Color--raven black.
Hi Gio. Charlie from Boston Mass USA.. Widower four years this December. Been to Mexico most of the last three years & couple times to Vietnam. I am back to watching Philippine videos. I will see my daughters at the house in Boston for Thanksgiving and Christmas when they fly back to New York and California I will be coming to the Philippines. I have a I have a friend in Mactan Cebu. And I will start there . I appreciate all of your research and guidance. I will arrive early January. See you soon, brother. 🙏
Hi Gio… thanks for another good video as always… and nice additions to the bike… been watching you since the beginning and always appreciate your trips an info… I enjoy the diversity in Duma too… and will hopefully run into you around town sometime as we are renting a house in Bacong…btw where did you get your new Christmas tree? Safe travels, my friend.
Good info Gio thanks for sharing. As time passes I get more and more fomo while waiting for my retirement lol. Having angst regarding future prices when I do finally retire 🤦🏻♂️🤣. Take care Jake
Great setup on the bike. Looking forward to seeing footage of the road trip. Are the roads outside of the cities on negros as busy as on the island of Cebu? I rented a car there in January with the intention of driving around the perimeter of the island, thinking there would be open road. There isn't! Quite a bit of traffic everywhere, so I didn't make it all the way around. But it was a good time.
Loving the bike, exactly the way I would set it up, Dumaguete gets some unwanted attention sometimes mainly due to the people you referred to in bars you want to avoid, be interested to see you do the travel vlog as Iloilo is the other option I have in mind to retire to, new sub here 😊
Hi. I really looking forward of videos from your trip. I don't plan to retire on Philippines, but I would like to visit Philippines every year for 2-3 months when I'm retired. It seems I will need to put Dumaguete on my list to visit. It seems like every vlogger Filipina or Filipina husband lives in Dumaguete or very close. 😁😁😁 Or maybe I just need to search little better. 😊😊😊
Sharp looking Bike! Love what you did to make it your own. I know the bike has age, so costs have changed, but have you done a video on your bike search, purchase, aftermarket additions (costs & reasons for), etc? Also, ever have a flat or run out of gas? If so how did you handle it.
Cool little bike.Good enough to move around.Good luck with your trip ✅Plan to visit as a tourist and travel around😊.Never been there so first to see if i like, then might travel more.👍 Ty for a nice tips.Anytime gym member here so cool to know 👍
If you're still relatively young and interested in Scuba Diving, Waterfalls, and being close to Water then Dumagete might be a better choice for you. If you're older and more sedate, I'd recommend Angeles. Many of you, especially those who have never been in the military, think Angeles is "Sin City" and is to be shunned. But I advise first timers to the PI to come to AC. Sew your Wild Oats - you have plenty of time to go wherever you want when you are retired. Clark is a modern airport. Without any hassles, in less than an hour you are off the plane, out of the airport, in a cab for the 15 minute, 700 peso ride, to the hotels. If you are looking for friends (I'm not, my wife is my BFF), there are many American style condo complexes for longer term stays, like Kandi suites, which is a bit like a Timeshare in the states - maid service, 24/7 security guards, swimming pools, fitness centers, internet, cable TV, ATMs, convenience stores, restaurants and roof top bars on the premises, and maintenance. These condos are ONLY rented by foreigners - from Australia, Canada, Europe, Korea, and the states - so it is easy to find friends if that is your thing. For military retirees there is even a VFW here. Plus everything you need is within 1 square mile, easily walkable, but if you are lazy, trikes and grab taxis are cheap and readily available. Within that mile there is a modern SM Mall (with an Imax theatre, 200 places to eat, and 500 stores), the "Entertainment District" (with GoGo Bars, Sports Bars, Karaoke Bars, Dance Clubs, Gentleman's Clubs, and my favorite Live House with a good live band), an S&R membership store (affiliated with Costco), and lots of restaurants - American chains like Chilis, Denny's, Duncan Donuts, Krispy Kreme, McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Texas Roadhouse, TGI Friday, etc - as well as my local favorites Swiss Chalet and Maiks (German), and Tequila Reef (Mexican, with the best Margaritas in town) - plus many Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Filipino restaurants, including chains like Greenwich Pizza and Jollibee. I personally don't have a Bike or a Car - don't need one here. Then 15 minutes by Grab Taxi is Clark International Airport surrounded by stores, duty free shops, restaurants, a new hospital, a Landers membership store, and the Marriott hotel with its fantastic Goji buffet featuring lobster. Yes, you can live in the Philippines, easily find friends, and have all the amenities of the states. Re Buying a Condo There are CONDO COMPLEXES like Kandi Suites, where I first rented, and now own my unit. Kandi is like a Timeshare in the states - maid service, 24/7 security guards, swimming pools, fitness centers, an ATM, convenience stores, and restaurants are on the premises, with maintenance and electric payments handled by the management. In 2011 I bought a 70SM,1BR, 2BA condo for 3 Million peso. I've since renovated it twice - once for 250K and then recently for 500K (including a double door refrigerator and 75 in TV. My monthly costs now are only my HOA fee of 8K and Electric bill (around 4K). Whenever I was in the US, I rented it out for 30K peso (plus HOA fees and Electric). Now it is my permanent home, I estimate it is worth around 7 million now. Considering that I saved on rent or got rental income for my unit over the last 13 years at 30K/month totaling (13yrs*12mo*30K) = 4.6 million peso and now own a 7 million peso unit - like home ownership in the US, I am well ahead and my wife has something after I pass. (I'm 74, she is 42 - my parents, who just died, made it to 99, so I expect to be around for awhile).
2 story star bucks in Dumaguete? Nice Gio I should go there Dumaguete sounds like my kind of town Gio maybe I'll move there sometime in the next few years
Too many foreigners creeping all relatively on top of each other, honorable Giovanni, over there in Duma but also already in more laid back communities like Bacong, Dauin and Valencia highlands. The rental offers market being already overly demanded upon for reasonable(and modestly acceptable) quality homes/appartments.
What about power and internet outages? I've heard it happens quite a lot in Duma and even more in Valencia. You also complained about water outages in a recent video. That is the first I have heard about that.
There were two power outages last week. There is a scheduled half day outage this Saturday, not to mention the smaller localized outages. I wouldn't call that infrequent and that's why I spent the money on a generator. I can't say that Dumaguete has water outages but I have heard many complaints about low pressure. On the other hand it's a different story in Valencia, Bacong, and Dauin. I am currently doubling my water storage capacity due to the unreliable water supply.
let me say as a german, who s been at the Philippines several times: Dumaguete these days is totally overcrowed with foreigns guys, | for me, it s not my dream town, my future destinations are north from Manila , one example is Bulacan, where the new MANILA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT is under construction .
There are cooler areas not just in Valencia but high up in Bacong, San Jose, Bais, Pamplona, Tanjay, Manjuyod, Bindoy, Siaton, Dauin. Amlan as Negros especially the Oriental side is mountainous.
Regarding the food in Duma being very good. How does it compare to the Chilis in Business Park? How do the burgers at the best place in Duma compare to the Army Navy Burger in Cebu? 80% of the food at restaurants, Filipino and international, in Cebu are disappointing.
$20 K peso gets new apt with all furnished big screen, pit group, large frig, water heater, queen bed and 4 burner stove with oven as a buddy got his on the beach for same price. Maybe you want to live in a Filipino style house for $5k or expect everything for nothing in a good neighborhood with security like i have
Dumaguete is only good for a nice weekend trip. Other than that, there is a lack of high tech hospitalization, expressways, Megaworld, Glorietta, Ayala malls, compared to the national capital region, or Nuvali or Tagaytay, Dumaguete is only a fools paradise.
Funny..I'm Iloilo now, came from Cebu to check it out..GF says she feels like an outcast a little bit due to dialect differences...I think we may be moving to Dumaguete soon..hahaha
like how you said expats can get together and talk about ISSUES..lol In my experience issues add up to the usual complaining and negative energy. after 20 years I have heard every issue and don't need it but thats just me.I keep my interaction with expats as casual as possible to avoid the drama.
congrats, guess you don't know anybody that has lost a house to a signifiicant other or complained about the many tough things that must be endured here. I didn't say anything about friends. @@GiointhePhilippines
Dumaguete, Butuan City and Bohol are on our lists of places for myself, my filipina wife and daughter to move. We are looking for an area with good schools, hospitals and reasonable housing. I don't mind expats but want to stay far away from sexpats and political expats. Expats I would like to be friends with would probably be family men like myself who respect marriage and family
If 'your' daughter is Afam you have to consider acceptance, better to fit into a neighborhood where that is normalised. Otherwise in-laws take precedence, then chismus, privacy.
I like the bars on your bike, I have never seen anything like them in Thailand. I kinda avoid most expats if I can, especially in areas where there’s a large population of them. I'm in Mexico right now, and I left the US in part to get away from the drama, but, I found a TON of them in Mexico, left wingers, right wingers, all crazy. 🙄 In Thailand not so much, but you did have some loons. I should be in the Philippines after the first of the year, I'm looking forward to checking Dumaguete out.
Hard to find a good value cheaper rentals due to gentrification from 'enough' expats ! -- Just evident comparing prices to other places ? I'm more of a bargain hunter. 🤗
LOL! "Some other friends" who had a very public meltdown that no Dumaguete vloggers want to touch with a ten foot pole? I am morbidly curious about what happened to both of them. I'm betting one is getting his wages garnished multiple times over for his child support obligations all across the Chicagoland area. The other probably has a new foreigner on the hook already.
Speaking of Retiring in the P.H. sir... I am having a hard time finding out what I need for my background check, and how long it takes to get a hard copy for Apostille?
If there was one thing that would keep me from moving there that would certainly be it. I would have a very hard time dealing with an all day without electricity. Is it like that in cities like IloiloAS WELL????
If you go thru Cebu check out Derek at (Q Adventures) as he rents bikes to expats and i both drove all over the islands as he has no restrictions and also took the roro ferry where bike rode iin it as i slept in air con bed. He is Mactan 10 minutes from airport and can do pickups if arranged in advance.. He is expat and Great guy. Be open-minded and Enjoy the trip travel light as Gio and Mike both have list of stuff to make it easier.
The biggest bad in Duma is not the expats but the women as in Duma there is limited work opportunities so you can date mostly unemployed filipinas. Whatever happening in Duma like new Starbucks ten times more in Cebu. Duma is surely not in good location as its an Island and you need to go via Cebu to anywhere. Infrastructure sucks in Duma like brownouts, bad internet,no taxis like grab and medical facilities not comparable to Cebu. You should have compared Duma to other province not to a city like Cebu.
@@GiointhePhilippines Yeh; like what streets was he on and was he standing next to a pile of trash by the hotel as haven't seen that in 6 months of visiting and living here
Great for Dumaguete l,growing up fast. In 2 years it's gonna be $1,500/ mo. for a studio apartment! Please find me a city with NO expats please, please, please
Don't add words to what I said, No where in the video did I say it is the best place to be. I have a list of places that I like but Dumaguete has it's positive qualities.

My favorite Starbucks is the one in tagatay over looking the volcano
Mine too ! > The Calamba Rd. McDonalds has a great view also. ❤👍🙏
The bike looks good, looks well taken care of, safe travels. I hope you have a good time.
nice bike! thanks for the info about duma.
You bet!
Hello Sir, do find 155cc to be enough of an engine? Or do wish at times that you had a 300cc?
155cc is fine
It’s looking at Iloilo.
What about power and internet outages? I've heard it happens quite a lot in Duma and even more in Valencia. You also complained about water outages in a recent video. That is the first I have heard about that.
The water outage was an apartment problem, not a Dumaguete problem. Electric outages happen infrequently.
How long did it take you to get adjusted to driving here? I'm from rural farmland USA, even San Fernando La Union was a shocker for me.
Problem with the "new" places is new higher prices
Looking at this video recorded early October and noticing the Christmas tree out already (as is the custom there).
Xmas is the -ber months
Does Robinson's Supermarket deliver?
Thanks
let me say as a german, who s been at the Philippines several times: Dumaguete these days is totally overcrowed with foreigns guys, | for me, it s not my dream town, my future destinations are north from Manila , one example is Bulacan, where the new MANILA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT is under construction .
Get into Dumaguete on the 10th… looking for a home… enjoy your trip.. hope to run into you..
Xmas tree up already 😮
Yea, it's late going up
Number 1 reason not to retire in dumigeta is no Condos for sale and rental prices will continue to go through the roof
$20 K peso gets new apt with all furnished big screen, pit group, large frig, water heater, queen bed and 4 burner stove with oven as a buddy got his on the beach for same price. Maybe you want to live in a Filipino style house for $5k or expect everything for nothing in a good neighborhood with security like i have
Continues to promote Dumaguete, wait till it’s overflowing with Expats, prices will soon soar
For us to move there it is fine but if you have a Filipina from another region, moving there could be difficult for her.
like how you said expats can get together and talk about ISSUES..lol In my experience issues add up to the usual complaining and negative energy. after 20 years I have heard every issue and don't need it but thats just me.I keep my interaction with expats as casual as possible to avoid the drama.
Wrong group of friends. Mine aren't like that.
congrats, guess you don't know anybody that has lost a house to a signifiicant other or complained about the many tough things that must be endured here. I didn't say anything about friends. @@GiointhePhilippines
@@GiointhePhilippines deleted my response, interesting..keep the story written on your terms. disssenters are not permitted.
I didn't delete any response
Dumaguete, Butuan City and Bohol are on our lists of places for myself, my filipina wife and daughter to move. We are looking for an area with good schools, hospitals and reasonable housing. I don't mind expats but want to stay far away from sexpats and political expats. Expats I would like to be friends with would probably be family men like myself who respect marriage and family
If 'your' daughter is Afam you have to consider acceptance, better to fit into a neighborhood where that is normalised. Otherwise in-laws take precedence, then chismus, privacy.
What?!! Brake lights are optional in the PH :)
What about General Santos City vs. Dumaguete City, PH for retirement city? Did you choose which motor car 🚘 to purchase? Thx
Very different cities. GenSan is very nice too
Car not needed, those complaining about traffic create it.
Are there direct flights to iloilo to dumaguete?
No
Hard to find a good value cheaper rentals due to gentrification from 'enough' expats ! -- Just evident comparing prices to other places ? I'm more of a bargain hunter. 🤗
what other bars are there in Dumaguete the only one I saw was the why not
First days of October and you have Xmas decorations up already?
It's the -ber months (no thanksgiving remember)
Hey good morning brother what happens if your bike stops.. & you can't get it to restart
Well, traveling with friends we would need to find the closest shop.
@@davidb371 same thing you would do if you car wouldn’t start up 🤔
TH-cam how to fix basic things bro. Drive belt. Flat tyre. Not much else goes wrong with them. If I can do it, you can do it better.
Leaving the West to see the tropics and ending up enjoying malls, Starbucks, and the gym !
Great video thank you
Speaking of Retiring in the P.H. sir... I am having a hard time finding out what I need for my background check, and how long it takes to get a hard copy for Apostille?
The process of getting an apostille depends on the issuing country. Others can get it in days while mostly it would take week/s.
takes several weeks usually
If there was one thing that would keep me from moving there that would certainly be it. I would have a very hard time dealing with an all day without electricity. Is it like that in cities like IloiloAS WELL????
Where is the USDA burger in Duma ?
La Mensa Bar or Bahia
Hi, I am planning a trip to Dumaguete! Perfect timing for the video!
Excellent, when you coming?
@@GiointhePhilippines Middle of December and leaving the second week of Jan
@@GiointhePhilippines I have never been to the Philippines, so it's going to be an adventure!
U would be better going to cebu or bohol for a quieter intro
If you go thru Cebu check out Derek at (Q Adventures) as he rents bikes to expats and i both drove all over the islands as he has no restrictions and also took the roro ferry where bike rode iin it as i slept in air con bed. He is Mactan 10 minutes from airport and can do pickups if arranged in advance.. He is expat and Great guy. Be open-minded and Enjoy the trip travel light as Gio and Mike both have list of stuff to make it easier.
gio you have lived in many places 👌 how long did you live in Cebu? how long Davao? thanks be well 👍
Cebu 3 years, Davao 2 years, Dumaguete 3 years
Dumagueti is always looking good. But I have my eyes on Iloilo cuz I really want to get a boat. THere is a boat club there.
Still get a lot of brown outs in Duma?
Not much
What is the best way for me to find long-term housing there? A furnished apartment.
Thanks!
What was the total cost of the bike + upgrades Gio?
Maybe around 50k pesos
@@GiointhePhilippines Thats amazing. I guess you bought it used
@@GiointhePhilippines what is a good price for that bike used?
Sorry 50k was for the accessories, the bike cost 110k pesos so about 160k total
@@GiointhePhilippines Roger
Relatively speaking, there are more foreigners in Dumaguete.
Will be in Duma on the 6th.
I'll be in iloilo
@@GiointhePhilippines Will be in Duma for a couple weeks, at least.
Ok great
Is insurance mandatory or optional for your motorbike?
you are required to get minimum liability for it every year when you register it or now for new bikes every 3 years. It is super cheap!
Where's that new car?
Saving up
Haha, you guys got that Christmas tree up early!
You got it all covered 😂 I say Dumaguete is also a lot cheaper than Cebu city!!
Gio, Dumagetti VS Iloilo?
In my opinion iloilo
Take it from a wealthy expat that had visited every city and province over 11 years. Dumaguete is NOT in my top 100. Avoid all expat areas.
People should make up their own mind.
who broke ur heart in Duma?
May you please share if you don't mind, some of your top places for us, potential visitors.ty Appreciate it.😊
There are better places than dumergueti and much cheaper and cleaner also the traffic is chaotic and the streets smell of urine
The streets smell of urine? really? lol
Absolutely correct so so many better options than Duma
So it smells like San Francisco and Los Angeles?
@@GiointhePhilippines Yeh; like what streets was he on and was he standing next to a pile of trash by the hotel as haven't seen that in 6 months of visiting and living here
Hej Mark would you mind sharing better cities, places so we can check them if we travel around please? Ty
Christmas tree? 😅. I know it’s a thing there… I never hear Vloggers talk about golf. Where do the expats that play golf live?
Yea, I'm late putting it up this year 😆
There are 3 golf courses here.
Great for Dumaguete l,growing up fast. In 2 years it's gonna be $1,500/ mo. for a studio apartment! Please find me a city with NO expats please, please, please
I have a perfect bamboo hut for you in the middle of the jungle. There are no expats for miles.
@GiointhePhilippines it sounds good on paper 😅
Maybe I missed it Gio, but you were looking to purchase a car..... just wondering?
postponed
Too many old boring men in Dumaguette. Better to go elsewhere like Makati
🌲 Christmas tree??
already 😂
It's late going up this year 😆
No Americans?!
went there to see what the hype was all about. found it rather dull and uninteresting
lol absolutely false been in Valencia 2 years and no way in this world is Dumaguete the best place to be. Stop it
Don't add words to what I said, No where in the video did I say it is the best place to be. I have a list of places that I like but Dumaguete has it's positive qualities.
@@GiointhePhilippines you have many many videos that claim it 🤷🏻
show me the exact video and time stamp where I said Dumaguete is the best place to be
If you love your wife/partner you would love the place she was born /comes from , a lot😊. I know I do 😊
Starbucks so overpriced and there better coffee that’s cheaper
I take it you’re moving away from Dumaguete lol.
😂😂
Wait a Christmas tree already 😂
Yea, it's late
Why Starbucks? It’s burnt coffee! Aren’t there any good mom and pop coffee shops worth visiting? 😊
