I mean, for a modern version you can just do something similar to Bullestorm and add an exaggerated Hollywood action heroine to go alongside the exaggerated Hollywood action hero, then in the strip club level add male strippers. You still keep the horny, over-the-top, action flick bullshit but now everyone gets the same amount of plot importance (who the fuck aside from Duke is even important in the first place?) as well as fanservice.

Total Meltdown on PS 1 had such brilliant soundtrack, that i can't imagine Duke 3D without it! Track "303" for me even second best soundtrack in video games history! Right after "Unreal Tournament - Foregone Destruction" Yeah, soooooo good!

Its been mentioned before but in a reboot, seqaul etc write Duke like how he was in Bulletstorm DLC, to quote another comment a "womanizing egomaniac, with a heart of gold" and actually Trishka Novak would be great characterization for Bombshell (if she differs then Shelly from Ion Fury)

I think they could make Duke exactly like he was - but it would take someone very level headed to manage customer service and social media. A lot of "I'm sorry to hear that" "I'm glad you feel so passionate for our IP" and "I'm sure you have been in this community since its inception and we value your patronage." Any kind of drama, justified or not, would just implode the whole project. As for the presentation, I think more of a pin-up motif might serve the series well. Objectified, but with some class and personality. But that's personal taste.

Duke 64 kinda shows how you could do a new Duke Nukem game, if you wanted to take the extreme route of sanitizing. It still kept the action movie stuff, just not so much the horny elements. You can keep the testosterone abusing Arnold Schwarzenegger thing, that's way too important to remove.

EDuke32 is the most comparable to GZDoom in terms of modding, and is what powers Ion Fury. Other Build games were later reversed engineered onto these ports in the late 2010s with projects like BuildGDX and Rednukem, except Shadow Warrior which had its own source released in 2005.
There are better first person shooters such as Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament 99, Unreal Tournament 2004, the Timesplitters series, the original Perfect Dark, Killing Floor, the original Shadow Warrior...

You should play Ion Fury. It's a very good spiritual successor to Duke Nukem 3D, and its expansion pack Aftershock is also quite good!

Also, I'd look into a Doom mod called 'Ashes 2063'. Not as much interactivity; but the story, setting, art, gameplay, and music are build-quality imo.
