    To answer the question regarding white phosphorous, they're allowed to bring it under the pretense that it will only be used to clear foliage.
    It is absolutely used extensively against people, though.

      I just rewatched Little Hope to get ready for this series, they took the "Say Nothing" option a few times there. They also chose not to say anything once or twice in the 2020 timeline which worked well.

    24:00 they have WP because the US armed forces claim to "only use it to deploy smokescreens" (which is not a war crime in itself) however there's been some instances of commanders in the field using it as an incendiary weapon (war crime) with the excuse "it's us or the enemy".

      Also the amount of fucking war crimes that happened in that war, the whole command of the US military should be in jail with like 3-4 presidents. I am pretty sure the first invasion front literally used plows on tanks to just bury people alive in their trenches and obliterating enemy posts so they didn't have to deal with surrender. The whole ware was just warcrimes from start to finish, hell people are still suffering there. The US airforce put out of commission civilian water treatment stations that are still out of commission to this day.

  • @PierceArner

    Ever since the first episode I've felt like this game's setting was inspired by how ISIL/ISIS actively and intentionally destroyed a huge number of ancient Babylonian & Assyrian archaeological sites and artifacts in 2015. A lot of those were around 3,000 years old and some of our best extant remains of those early human cultures. It's really gut-wrenching to think about how actions like that could permanently prevent us from ever learning things about the past.
    It's also interesting to see the comments on this episode digging in to the technical details about white phosphorus & war crimes from a more serious perspective as well. It definitely seems like it's open to some sketchy "accidents" but it also seems more firmly opposed than how riot police can use Tear Gas against their own citizens, but it's banned as a chemical weapon in warfare. That's still something in particular that never ceases to feel completely backwards.
    The way it doesn't really shy away from having a lot of the deeply frustrating and topically relevant things hopefully means that it indirectly helps conversations like this keep happening. It's pretty important to highlight real-world information like this from being just moved on from and left as-is. Even if you're just using it as a backdrop for a spooky fantasy story, sometimes that's enough to get people talking.

    • @moonjunk9054
      @moonjunk9054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      i feel like the game's setting is much more so inspired by how the US forces conducted looting and destruction of cultural artifacts in Iraq during the 2003 invasion, many museums were raided and artifacts lost for possibly forever due to the invasion

    • @weezact7
      @weezact7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      To be fair, a LOT Of what the police do and have feel completely backwards. When footage of the stuff they do makes vets go "Woah. That's excessive!" you know you have a problem.

    • @PierceArner
      @PierceArner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@moonjunk9054 Given the time that it's set in that's likely more the focus of the narrative. I think that the catalyst for the setting was probably how those ancient cities and artifacts were being intentionally bulldozed and jackhammered away though. That's why it has the "enemy of my enemy" perspective, because regardless of who's doing it - all of humanity loses when those things happen.

    • @PierceArner
      @PierceArner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@weezact7 There's definitely a lot of passive assimilation of pseudo-military capabilities that definitely needs to be reevaluated on a lot of levels. Especially in the US, but I think that there's plenty of room for that evaluation to look at how we operate as a society and what we prioritize.
      Police and their focus in general definitely needs to be redefined away from the "vigilante rogue detective" meets "no compromise tough-guy" stereotypes and very significantly refocused around something that serves a necessary community purpose. "Riot police" are a specialization as-is, but there are more useful types of specialization that would be beneficial (and probably wouldn't feel like they can get away with something that would otherwise be considered a war crime).

    White phosphorus isn't banned on the battle field entirely. It has non-lethal uses, for instance, smoke screens, bunker burning, marking targets, illumination etc. its use IS, however, banned against people and animals. This is why a soldier would have it on the battle field.
    But of course, at the macro level, you can't expect every individual in the military to make the right moral or legal decision, thus leading to its use against people that typically flys under the radar.

    I've never been in the service and even I know they're taking some liberties with this. The level of disrespect Merwin shows his superiors is staggering (correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Rachel is CO earlier that day?). And, while I imagine "your mom" jokes are fine when you're around the base on downtime, when you're in a briefing or on a mission, I'd hope there's a standard of professionalism that's expected to be maintained. To be fair, their officers don't seem to be that good at giving orders, either. "Spread out and Fight back" is PRETTY FUCKING vague.
    I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe someone with actual experience in the armed forces can correct me. I'm sure a lot of armchair military personnel will.

      The devs of the game are in Britain (apparently that circle with a question mark on Zain's map is the location of their offices), so I think there are some large pinches of salt to be taken in their portrayal of actual US military personnel and procedures. God knows how many inaccuracies there probably are about the portrayal of Iraq, but comes with the territory I guess.

There's essentially 0 chance they were laying down accurate fire from that far away on the mountainside. AK's aren't known for their accuracy even in the best of circumstances, that's kinda the price you pay for having very loose tolerances letting the gun run no matter how fucked up it gets.

    My understanding is that it isn't a war crime to use WP. It's an incendiary and as such cannot be deployed where it might endanger civilians. Anything else is fair game. Think about it: it's ok to use a 500lbs JDAM but a 500g incendiary grenade is taboo? Nah.

      Its a war crime to use WP on any person. there is a legal loophole that is exploited where you can use it on equipment and supplies, but WP is toxic so it just ends up killing people regardless. Oh and of course the US is immune to all international justice due to not being a part of the ICC and the Hague Invasion Act, so that loophole doesn't really matter anyway.
