I love my LTW knives. I have about a dozen. Also have a collection of Bark Rivers, Battle Horse, Pathfinder knife shop and many others. A ton of them are Scandis. I don’t use any of them anymore. Once I stated carrying a Sabre ground knife I was hooked. That’s my outdoor grind now. The edges hold really well and they do everything my Scandis do. My favorite Is the LTW GNS Scandi. I also like Bark Rivers with their convex grind. Another grind that does everything well.
I also used to have a bunch of LT's. They are high quality knives, but as you said preferences change and I sold them all along with the rest of my fixed blades. The money was used to buy a knife oven, grinder, and a bunch of supplies. For the past 7 or 8 years I have been making my own. It's the only way to get a knife that fits the hand perfectly and that does exactly what I want.
The Knife Connection (TKC) did a collab with LT a Christmas season or two ago to offer what looked to me like the Pronghorn but with a longer handle. They called it the Boattail, exclusively available through TKC. I could totally see Ethan (TKC owner) doing another run of those.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm kind of surprised you keep buying L.T. Wright knives given your dissatisfaction. Have you tried any Work Tuff Gear knives? I have the Voyageur and the Kodiak, and they are great knives. You might also consider the Terava Jakaripuukko series. I have the 110 and it's a solid choice. I have the large northern hunter from L.T. I haven't used it enough to have an opinion on it. It did arrive sharp, but not crazy sharp.
Don’t be surprised at all. LT makes a good knife, but I’ve found that they’re not as good as other knives I’ve come to own. I don’t consider them unusable tools, just not my first preference. If I were to only to have and use my LT knives, I’d manage just fine, but would feel sad if I had to use an LT instead of my RJ Evans knives. 😄
Not only will I stick to your knives, but will do so gladly and with a Gollum-like possessive quality, but without the loin cloth. Your knives are…prrrecciousss to me! They are mine! My own! Hey, I did finally find a great use for the Gen 6. I needed a stir stick for a gallon of paint. Worked flawlessly. I’m recommending to my local hardware store to throw in a Gen 6 with every paint purchase of 5 gallons or more.
@@8626John Haha! 🤣 In all seriousness, I’ll probably do a give-away or something when I hit 1000 subs. The Gen6 is one of a few I may offer as a give-away knife. 👍
I own many LT Wright Knives mostly the small fixed blades the Next Gen in 3V, Lil Muk in 3v, and a Frontier first in 3V, also Patriot knives in A2 no problems in chipping on mine. Also have 2 Frontier Valley knives in 01 carbon steel no problems in chipping I like them very much. They are high quality made in USA so more expensive but worth it to me. Everyone has their opinions on any brand including me. I have some knife reviews on TH-cam on LT Wright knives you can watch. Thanks for your video.
Good video. I ordered the Rob Evans FTP cause of you and another gents videos. Do you find the FTP better the the Lagom? If possible could you do a comparison video? Greetings from Dallas, Tx.
Awesome! 👍 I hope you love the FTP. I love mine, and thank you for the content suggestion. It’s should put out some comparisons and show/explain why I prefer Rob’s knives over my others.
Just found your channel. Sounds like we in the same MT range time. My 4 year old and I were chasing Colorado cutthroat and bookies on the north slope around China meadows.
Great video man, I agree it’s all about preferences and finding what works best for you. The Gen6 isn’t for everyone for sure, I own one but don’t use it much because it just doesn’t fit me. I’ve beat the tar out it, but just not a huge knife guy.
I love my Genesis FFG.. A2 steel, excellent heat treat. Its a basic kephart. The handle is the "sauce" on this knife. I also own a GNS in AEB-L. I prefer this blade as an all-around LT... All that being said, they are task specific blades for me. If I'm going to carry a 6oz blade in the back country, it has to be multifunctional. I have to feel good with it stabbing into hard material. Also, the draw has to be fast and easy to re-sheath. I've been on a Lionsteel M5 for the last couple of years. I love that knife, it's in sleipner, easy to sharpen and a great value.. I think you'll dig it. Great video, man. I dig the honest take, we evolve over time and that's what's so cool about blades. They capture little bits of time for us.
Thanks for the comment! 👍 Totally agree with you about the handle on the Genesis. It’s one of the best! 👍 Haven’t tried the M5 but there’s always tomorrow. 😁 I had the T5 for several years. Lionsteel puts out some great blades!
I would say buy moraknive scouts and that the purpose of a scandi grind is to carve wood tools and you can skin game with nothing but a sharp stone so go buy a load of disposable kitchen knives from thrift store/yard sales and use and abuse them. Buy knives you that wont make you cry when they get lost, broken or stolen.
Thanks for the comment. Lots of great tool options for users at different price points for sure. Whether a great, less expensive Mora or higher end knife, I love to use’em all. 😄👍
As they say one man's trash is another man's treasure 👊... And like you, I sm in no way calling any of the mentioned knives trash, whew, I almost stepped right into that one 😊
Haha! 😂 No complaints with LT quality, as they do provide well made knives. I’ve just found that for me, preference drives me to grab others. When it comes to a scandi grind and working wood, RJ Evans knives can’t be beat! 👍
Agreed! 👍 For me and what I like in a small’ish bushcraft knife, those built by a certain woodsman from Wales are all I need. 😉 He is the Master of the Scandi Sith and I pledge allegiance to his scandi ground sabers.
Well you know the Larry Robert’s was only longer bc Larry said that he spent a lot of time just batonung for the hell of it and so they made him that for his second run on alone
Yes, that’s true, but it’s still not my cup of tea. If Larry loves it, then bless his precious little noggin. I’ve found it does make a great stir stick for paint and Kool-aid.
So, your Lt Larry Roberts knife I would list in some of the Lt groups on Facebook since they are not making them anymore after the first of the year people are looking for them.
That is good to know! Thanks for the comment! 👍 I’m sure there’s someone out there who would love it and use it, so I’ll have to dig around some more and look into this.
Another commenter also referenced the Pronghorn. I mentioned to him that The Knife Connection (TKC) did a limited run collaboration with LT a while back, which was pretty much the Pronghorn but with a longer handle. I saw it and thought to myself, “All the Pronghorn users are going to love this!” 😄

Agree x 3000. I’ve found that some knives that work well for others aren’t a good fit for me for one or more reasons. A wise wizard once told me that the knife very much chooses its master. Or maybe I heard that in a movie ir something. 😄
If you put a micro bevel on your scandi it will stop your chipping the scandi is a worthless grind I have yet to have anyone tell me what is so special about the scandi that can’t be done with a flat grind bevel
It all comes down to preference, my friend. Yep, there are plenty of folks who hate scandi grinds for whatever reason, yet entire civilizations who love’em and have for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Plenty of folks who would also frown at a a full flat grind and only swear in absolutes by a saber grind. For me, I can appreciate knives across all the grind spectrums, including some hollow grinds and chisel grinds. I don’t believe there are any rights or wrongs here. If a scandi grind isn’t someone’s flavor, then they can go with what whatever other grind works best for them. Same for the whole carbon steel vs stainless steel debate or small knife vs. large knife argument. It all comes down to preference.
In my neck of the woods, we are not aloud to use green wood. I find the scandi grind particularly useful when working with seasoned wood. Sometimes, the wood becomes almost glassy after a few cuts; that’s when you need the bite of scandi grind. I appreciate a small and thin carver with a scandi grind. I don’t like this grind on big knives. Personally, I prefer the versatility of a full convex when it is well done. I also often find that a very well made knife will, to a point, overcome the limitations of its grind.
Absolutely, that's why people with certain knife brands are attached to certain knife brands, while others are not...doesn't mean the knife is bad or the best...we are all complicated beings...well said
@@JoeSteel1 thanks, brother! 👍 Think about how boring life would be if we could enjoy a product based on preference and all had to conform to a single way of thinking about things? I’m glad to have variety.
Try a properly ground convex grind, it doesn’t dig deep unless you want it to, it’s almost, if not just as efficient as a scandi in wood but without the limitations on anything else you might be cutting.
I can’t get into a kephart due to it not having enough point to do any fine detail work. Even things like try sticks are much nicer done with a pointy knife. Unless you’re making your notches huge!! The entire reason I feel Mora knives are great is the blade height. They are narrow, and pointy. That makes them perfect for wood craft. Perfect for carving and making wooden utensils. When BHK came out with the feather stick I was thrilled and knew that would be an amazing knife cause it’s like a high quality Mora. Well they messed it up by having a much taller blade. You simply can’t tell that from the pictures, cause it all looks normal till in person, when everything had been upscaled 3x the size. So I find the better option is that BPS 3 knife that is a full tang replica of a mora. Now that is a superb knife with steel that’s easy to sharpen and maintain. Would I still prefer it in a better steel? Only if It came in 3V or the like maybe.

@@blackhawkbushcraft that would be incredible. The Lagom also has a really nice and ergonomic handle for wood work.
These low scandis don't work. Scandi grind only works with thin knives. Thicker than 3mm have to change to saber or convex.
You can film from a bigger frame then crop out the inshot logo. I've done it myself
Thanks for the comment and suggestion. 👍

A2 chippy? I have never found that to be the case. It’s my favorite of the simple carbons, much better than 1095.
