To Scandi or Not to Scandi: The Great Debate!
มุมมอง 1.6K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Scandi grind or no scandi grind: is that even a question? I’m a small knife guy and love me a good scandi grind. While I prefer a scandi grind on a small knife designed to work wood, it has it’s pros and cons and may not be the right edge for you depending on your knife application. If you love scandi grinds as much as I do, the best around IMO are found on RJ Evans knives. Rob Evans Woodsman m...

      Absolutely use it. 👍 I’ve owned it for a few years now and EDC it almost every day. It’s a great EDC/general utility combo edge and is holding up great and going strong. Depending on the specific Mora the edge angle is 10-13° per side (carbon Companions are ~10°, the HDs 13°). They do come with a small secondary bevel but you need to sharpen that out to get the knife sharp again. If I keep to a pure Scandi, I found I needed to raise the angle to 14° for the edge no longer to roll when carving although the carbon steel variants always did a lot better.

      I have heard a really small micro bevel will not really affect wood cutting performance much at all, but will toughen the edge to reduce rolling/chipping

    • @Snarlacc
      @Snarlacc 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ShoahBiz I find it does make a difference in precision cuts since it slightly alters the "bite angle" of the knife. Not a problem when cutting branches and notches, only if you need to make really straight/precise cuts when carving something complex. It does strengthen the edge from rolling, but not as much as raising the whole bevel angle. Of course that depends what size you call a microbevel.

    So far this is my opinion based on my experience and my observations how people traditionally use and sharpen their skandi knives in the skandinavian countrys. If you havw a knife with a traditional high skandi zero grind the normal way is that you add a secondary bevel ,a couple times , each time it gets dull. When you reach the point that your secondary bevel leaves too much thickness of the blade behind it then you resharpen the whole skandi grind bevel back to zero. This way you can use up the blade till the hights of the blade is used up. And the blade beeing flat behind the skandi bevel gives your that opportunity. It will keep the performance of the blade on a certain level over the whole lifespan of that blade This is a thing you will not be able to achive easily with any other typ of grind .

    • @blackhawkbushcraft
      @blackhawkbushcraft 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Don’t recall saying that at all. I believe I recall saying that, depending on the scandi edge, a zero grind may need a micro bevel to avoid chipping or rolling. Some scandi knives are ground very shallow, so you either add the microbevel or convex the edge, or just deal with the chipping/rolling if you want to maintain a true zero.

    The problem is that it’s hard to find a quality convex ground blade nowadays. Buck River is unpredictable. Falkniven is usually too obtuse. I would dare to say that you can make convex cut wood as well as a Scandi. Or better.

      @@RobEvansWoodsman I just called a knife shop in Indiana and spoke to a Dan, Dale, Dave-can’t remember for sure. Anyway, I told him I was considering their 10-inch scandi ground 3/32 stock 1095 knife, but now thinking about the Busse because it can start a fire with pure awesomeness. He told me to seriously reconsider because the Busse is not scandi ground and that using pure awesomeness to start a fire has never been done on survival reality TV and to stick with what’s been tried and tested in front of TV producers and executive directors, even if it is sensationalized, made up, and not real. He said even if I have to run around the mountainside in nothing but a drafty loin cloth in search of some tinder fungus, a very thin 1095 scandi ground knife and a flint will keep me alive, whereas a Busse will not because it is not scandi ground and doesn’t have a curly maple handle. I’m really torn now!

      The Knife Connection (TKC) did a collab with LT a Christmas season or two ago to offer what looked to me like the Pronghorn but with a longer handle. They called it the Boattail, exclusively available through TKC. I could totally see Ethan (TKC owner) doing another run of those.

      Agree x 3000. I’ve found that some knives that work well for others aren’t a good fit for me for one or more reasons. A wise wizard once told me that the knife very much chooses its master. Or maybe I heard that in a movie ir something. 😄
