The new gymnastics scores are a mix of Difficulty and Execution - hypothetically you could have a "perfect 10" on execution, but there's so many deductions, especially if you want to get your difficulty up (so for instance, having knees apart is a deduction, but it helps them get more air which helps them do more difficult skills which increases the D score). It's part of why Simone Biles is so dominant - her difficulty is unmatched.
These are great though, neat trivia!

About Table Tennis, China is beatable. In Sweden we still speak about when we beat them in the TEAM-competion (which is insane) in three straight world championships in 1989, 1991 and 1993 (also in 2000). And in mens single Sweden won gold in 1992 and the same player took silver in 2000 and almost went on a miracle run in 2004 as a 40-year old (went to the semifinal), arguably one of the best players of all time and he's not Chinese.

that's 3 decades ago. Sweden no longer has the manpower to raise good players. China was good back then, but they really took off after 2004, after Wang Hao's loss to the Korean, they basically vowed never to lose gold singles ever again. If anything, we can look at Japan instead, since they actually won mixed doubles.

If you considerer the next place, for athletes with 8 golds there are 9 before Paris 2024 and only 2 of them from swimming... so the argument of "Phelps is overrated because is swimming is easy to get that many medals" is the most ignorant thing to say to take out the credit of the greatest athlete of all times...

Also, heptathlon is 7 events, not 8 - it would be called an octathlon if there was an eighth event. Note that it is possible; prior to 1984, what is now the heptathlon was a pentathlon, with only 5 events (the 200m and javelin were not included, although for a long time, the 200m was run in place of the 800m).

Also, each governing body for sport can decide the age limit. So for example theoretically there could be a really amazing athlete who is just 12 or 13 years old, but their sports federation May set the age limit to 15 or 16 or older. There is an intresting wrinkle to the youngest to win a medal (gold or any) so gold is currently 13 and any is 10 but there might be someone who has both beat the only problem is it was like around 1900 and no one knows how old the kid was but many think he was 7 so if it could ever be 100% confirmed that would be the record and that would never be broken.

You're a bit off on the gymnastics scoring part. The new gymnastics scoring rules is a totally different system, and is way better and far more objective. Your routine starts with a base difficulty that you know going in. Around 14-16 points would be a hard routine. Then you are judged based off how well you execute the routine, and points are deducted. So you will have something like 15.5 points starting value, 1.5 points get deducted for imperfections in the routine, and your final score is 14.0.

Phelps isn't that impressive to be honest.
In swimming there are just waaaay more gold medals available for basically the same skill than in any other sports. Let's say a tennis player would dominate for 22 years and win every possible gold medal in these 5 consecutive olympic games. Then he would still be at only 15? Single, double and mixed?
At the 2024 Olympics in swimming there are 35 out of 329 gold medals. Even though it's only 1 out of 48 disciplines.
Even if you only go for freestyle you can get 10 medals at one olympics.
Phelps gaines only 13 out of 23 gold's in individual contests. At 4 olympic games he won 5 different ones. So he won 13 out of 20 medals in his primary events.
Don't get me wrong. He is one of the best ever, being on top of it for 4 olympics. But the medal count doesnt make it more impressive than e.g. Bolt dominating 100m and 200m consecutively 3 times.

I appreciate your detailed response. I hear what you're saying, especially as a few others have brought up those same items. But even if you want to discount the TOTAL number of medals won, his record is still staggering for the RELATIVE number of medals won.
Like sure, you can't compare swimming to track or tennis or archery or whatever. So fine, compare him to 130 years of other swimmers with all of the same opportunities for medals, he completely and utterly destroys them. That, to me, is what truly earns him the place on the list.

I think swimmers would disagree that it's easy on their bodies. Might not be the same as track for example, but I doubt they'd say it's easy.
And yeah, I totally agree that Bolt would have like 50 gold medals, but he doesn't, so he doesn't get a record. He should have chosen swimming I guess?

@@voxathletica once again swimming is not a sport, humans were not meant to swim. Saying you’re good at swimming is like saying ‘I’m good at something that’s irrelevant!’ I think Usain GOAT LEGEND WORLD RECORD HOLDER BOLT is very happy with his choice to run track and field. He is a far superior athlete to Phelps bar none. No comparison. Phelps also got arrested for DUI so he has no regard for other people’s health and safety. He could have hit and killed your loved one but okay!

@@user-bt4vs9ey1y Yeah that was a bad choice by Phelps, not sure what it has to do with his Olympic performances though.
And if you go off of the logic of "humans aren't meant to swim", then that tosses most other Olympic events. Even sprinting itself, with Usain Bolt as you say, isn't what humans evolved to do as we are built for distance running, not sprints

@@user-bt4vs9ey1yand humans were meant to kick soccer balls? What a weird take.
Actually almost all mammals can naturally swim, so if anything swimming is one of the most natural and relevant activities.

You need to change your mentality when it comes to divisions in society. It's 2024. The whole country will benefit from that, in every field.

Your country is not poor in sports. Resources are not put in place to help athletes. Hopefully it will get better
