No one really cares about football or rugby at the olympics, strong teams don't send their best players. Which is why you'll see israel and mali playing football at the olympics but not stronger teams.
@@aridddle I think it's because the men's tournament is Under 23 age restriction, so the superstars from Europe and South America aren't competing. It's probably harder to maintain consistency when you have a whole new team every Olympic games. Either way, I'll take it for the US.
The USSR was much more potent in the Summer Olympics than any country before or since. Telling that they still lead some categories despite only participating in a mere 9 Olympics.

If you see at the Commonwealth games we are split as, Isle of Man 🇮🇲, Scotland 🏴, England 🏴, Wales 🏴, Northen Ireland. China currently has a lot of investment going into sports, which is why they are currently leading the Olympic rankings in Paris. However, this investment is pretty recent considering China was a very poor country a few decades ago. Hence why historically they obviously weren’t the most dominant country. This is definitely slowly changing though. China have been a top country for the past few Olympics now. They came 1st in 2008, 2nd in 2012, 3rd in 2016, 2nd in 2020 and now are currently 1st again in 2024

Honestly, this is a "grass is always greener" scenario. What the U.S. has is facilities. Most athletes in the U.S. do not have any kind of funding or support. One of our shotput Olympians tweeted how she couldn't sleep the day before her competition because she couldn't afford rent. This isn't even that uncommon. A lot of Olympians live at or below the poverty line and usually need roommates. You only hear about people like phelps or biles but the money and support they get is from sponsorship deals and being in one of the lucrative sports. I personally was on the U.S. national team. In order for me to get on the national team I had to be competitive at the international level before I could be considered. To be clear, I had to be able to compete at the world level before the U.S. would give me a jersey and their permission to race internationally. Even on the U.S. team I was using my own equipment.
It's stupid to compare like that. You have to compare countrys by population . Its impossible to Canada with a population of 40 million to have the same numbers of medals than USA who have 400 millions.
You want fairness? But in fact, many populous countries have relatively underdeveloped economies, or have been stagnant for a long time. There are also many other factors that you might need to consider.

It's incredible than Canada finish with the most medals in the winter olympics in vancouver 10 years ago approximatively. We are only 40 millions.

The United States is always above the rest in overall AND gold, because we have the greatest athletes in the world. There are some great ones in other countries, like Usain Bolt, but overall the USA is always on top. It's proof that our country is the most athletic country in the world.

The soviets were pretty legit back in the day. Granted, they were juicing the fck out of their athletes and all of their athletes were basically professionals by any other country's definition so maybe they shouldn't be allowed, but events like gymnastics they were nasty.

You have the advantages of different ethnic groups..you can use Caucasian in swimming, and other white dominated sports, blacks in track and field events,basketball, boxing,WRESTLING etc ...Slavic and asian community in gymnastics..native American( though are very little in numbers) and honolunu people in surfing, sailing, rowing, canoeing ...This diversity helps you to grab most of the medals...you have nothing so special..Some European countries like Portugal, BRITAIN, GERMANY, FRANCE, BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS,SPAIN, ITALY are also following yours way...only RUSSIA AND CHINA HAVE USED THEIR PURE ETHNIC People..in sports genes matter
