Excellent video! Another Olympic sport that used to be: "Pattern Figure Skating:" Through 1968, at least women skaters had to do a sub-event where they skated slowly but precisely to shape particular figures/patterns with their skate scratches in the ice. As a little kid I remember watching Peggy Fleming {Gold medalist to be} doing her required patterns. Maybe the term started from that: 'Figure Skating." I learned: In the rural days of pond skating, {19th century, early 20th} many people skated to outline particular shapes.
Good memory on patterns! Compulsory figures or school figures were what they were called, they were a huge part of figure skating, making up around 60% of the score until 1947. Slowly, over time, they dwindled in the requirements until they were discontinued as part of competition in 1990. More than a few viewers would agree with you! I put up a short on Pistol Dueling too (just a clip from the video, nothing new) and it was super well supported there as well
Well, believe it or not there is a current pistol competition that has duel as part of the venue. It is not very popular now, but still around. It is called International Center Fire Pistol. Caliber has to be between .32 and .38. The first 30 shots are shot in 10 shot strings at a bullseye target that does not move. The next phase is Duel, which is really fun to shoot. The targets are knife edge to the competitor. There is a 7 second pause, the targets turn rapidly towards the shooter and present themselves for 3 seconds, then face away for 7 seconds. During the non shooting segment the person must lower his pistol to a 45 degree angle (un supported) and wait until the target presents itself again for 3 seconds. This goes on for a total of 30 shots. So the total slow fire (30 shots) and the 30 shot Duel give a maximum score of 600, if one shot all bullseye. No one does. I used to shoot in the 560's. They shoot this event at the Pan American Games but not the Olympics. Scores are usually in the 580s. I used to shoot it once a month and it was really fun.

Handball started out as an outdoor sport, they called it field handball and it was played on about the size of a soccer field. It only made one appearance in the Olympics in 1936 and the entire sport became extinct in the 1960's when the indoor handball we see now took over.
Those might be my two fav as well to bring back. Both are super simple and straightforward, they both have that old school Olympics vibe to them, and they are both just pure tests of physical capabilities.
I think with technology changing so many events too, some of those "old school" ones would be more beneficial than ever. Really displays the original concept of the games which is human achievement and capability
Having an art competition is kind of wacky, since it's all very subjective, but in ancient Greece, there were the Pythian Game and Nemean Games, which featured art, poetry, debate, philosophy, music etc. so not as strange as it may seem (well maybe nowadays it would be). Sort of like Coachella, America's Got Talent, Olympics, and Debate Club all wrapped into one!

That's at the top of my list of sports that should be in the Olympics. The other two sports in my top three are beach soccer and some form of downhill or enduro mountain biking. (Seems like a MASSIVE missed opportunity to leave that last one out of the current Olympics, since they're being held in the host nation of Megavalanche and the Mountain of Hell!)
Unfortunately television is calling the shots these days and their interest is in creating content for couch potatoes. BMX doesn't belong in the Olympics. I think beach volleyball is a great sport but the rules on what the women can wear are wrong. A of countries can't compete because their women won't wear those skimpy suits. TV tried to get wrestling kicked out. One of the primary sports of the ancient games! I could go on.
I don’t disagree with you at all. But I wonder if the countries that won’t let women wear that clothing would even let them play volleyball. Just wondering.
I am an old Olympicaholic. If you only count on network TV is a challenge. With streaming things are really much better. I would like to say that BMX is not my cup of tea, but adding a sport that will appeal to the younger generation is what keeps the Olympics viable. One thing I fully agree is outdoor women's volleyball. Your views are very valid and needs more discussion.
I read somewhere that women in beach volleyball are allowed to wear one-piece swimsuits. They choose not to because it can get uncomfortable if sand gets inside it.

I'm actually surprised France didn't consider it for these games, at least as an exhibition. They have world championships and they're very entertaining.
I made a video and posted to the channel about the Top 10 Viewer's Choice picks for new events, so that covers off a little bit of that, but I get your idea. Equestrian events are the only ones where men & women compete equally w/ & against each other , both team & individually . ( Thank you Lis Hartel , 1952 dressage medalist ! ) Other sports should offer the same opportunities .

Dueling pistols can work. The safest choice would be some kind of laser/light system. Next safest, but more visually exciting, would be using some kind of paint pellets.
Honestly, competing in a race over a specified time period sounds like an interesting idea in concept. Maybe not 12 hours like the cycling race, but if the time was randomly assigned from say 10 seconds to 10 minutes and the athletes did not know how long they had to compete for, it would make for a really interesting race. You'd have teams picking different athletes based on their abilities and going off of luck (distance athletes of course would be more preferred but you never know because the time could be really short to favour a sprinter). And seeing when athletes crack in trying to guess when the right time will be.

Parquer or whoever you spell it should be in the Olympics. Those guys/girls are elite.
Parkour? Yeah that would be intense, what a sport
Parkour would be fun to watch.
Ninja warrior would be awesome in the Olympics
Right? Or at least some sort of obstacle course event
It‘s now part of modern pentathlon. It now replaces the equestrian part.
This is beautiful content I don’t know why you have few subs 😢❤❤
Thank you, I appreciate it! I'm a first-time TH-camr and I just started my channel a few months ago, so hopefully more subscribers coming in the future 👍
Cameo from Gun Jesus. Thumbs up granted!
It is swell of Him to show up, thanks!
Love your content. Keep uploading more.
Thank you, I definitely will!
Handball started out as an outdoor sport, they called it field handball and it was played on about the size of a soccer field. It only made one appearance in the Olympics in 1936 and the entire sport became extinct in the 1960's when the indoor handball we see now took over.
Hard to imagine an outdoor version of handball at this point, but I'm guessing it was awesome
Fun fact: ireland has its own version of handball. Imagine squash but with a glove instead of a racquet
@@robertharrington703 That version of handball has made it's rounds in the US too. I think it's more common on the streets of New York City.
But they have outdoor handball now.
@@voxathletica Maradonna was playing it at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico though.
Bring back tug of war and rope climb
Yup, I'm on board with both!
I would take some of these events over break dancing any day.
I think we're all in that boat, for sure
My favourite wacky 1900 event is Hot Air Ballooning, where the winner flew from Paris to Kyiv.
Of course they'll never bring it back, but holy crap I would DEFINITELY watch that
I can't wait for chasetag to join the Olympics. It's so much fun
Chasetag is a blast to watch, I've never played it myself but it looks amazing
Arm wrestling should be am Olympic. Sport
It's not the worst idea I've heard, that's for sure. It even kinda combines a few elements in other Olympic events, so it sorta makes sense
Great list , I go for Tug of War and Rope Climbing outdoors come back . Also karate should be included it was in Tokyo 2020
Those might be my two fav as well to bring back. Both are super simple and straightforward, they both have that old school Olympics vibe to them, and they are both just pure tests of physical capabilities.
@@voxathletica I strongly agree 👏
TOW and rope climb, yes!!!
Right?!? How awesome would those be, guaranteed to be high in the ratings
@@voxathletica indeed. and great for both athletes and spectators. I'd love to see both on the program.
I think with technology changing so many events too, some of those "old school" ones would be more beneficial than ever. Really displays the original concept of the games which is human achievement and capability
@@voxathletica absolutely, back to the roots, kind of.
There have been quite a few folks who have lobbied for what I'll call the "intellectual" events such as what you outline as well as things like chess. It would say a lot if the mental and physical events were played alongside each other!
@@voxathletica chess would be a cool addition, as well as Go, Mahjong etc. just to change things up a bit (not a fan of diving, they could axe that lol)
This is gold 😂
I'm glad you like it! Check out some of my other videos too and let me know if you like them as much!
Free Diving should totally be an Olympic sport.
Quite a few folks would agree with you, it's been a popular choice in a few of the comment sections of other videos!
Cross country running should return to the games
And, along those lines, I think ultra running would be a cool addition to the games too
That's at the top of my list of sports that should be in the Olympics. The other two sports in my top three are beach soccer and some form of downhill or enduro mountain biking. (Seems like a MASSIVE missed opportunity to leave that last one out of the current Olympics, since they're being held in the host nation of Megavalanche and the Mountain of Hell!)
I ran XC in high school. Good times. I think it definitely should be brought back.
I think the Seine was probably cleaner then than it is now! Less sewage coz of fewer people 😂
HAHA I'm not qualified to answer that, but I think we can all agree it still ain't as clean as it should be
What we need is "The Great French Duel". Rules to be found in Mark Twain's short story.
Haven't read that particular Twain, but I just added it to my reading list
@@voxathletica cool! 's a good one.
Add fishing as an event. Also ice fishing at the winter games.
Believe it or not, Angling was once an Olympic event! So hey, it could come back at some point
I really think Arts should return.
It would be interesting to see mental/intellectual activities be given a similar standing to physical ones
Money definitely runs the show today, can't disagree with you there. Very different from how the Games used to be even a couple of decades ago
What about skateboarding or wall climbing 😂
I read somewhere that women in beach volleyball are allowed to wear one-piece swimsuits. They choose not to because it can get uncomfortable if sand gets inside it.
How can you forget slinging?
If the Olympics care about tradition, it should definitely be there
I remember the synced swimming and I thought WTF?
LOL you and everyone else!
Maybe the IOC could adopt the Eurovision Song Contest every four years.
Hey, if they can accept breakdancing, anything is possible
@@voxathletica Problem is it's European only and it's 100% commercial as it's hosted by European Broudcasting Union and technically national public TV stations that are members compate ;p it's not officially recognized as sport too. Note that in today olympics events are hosted by respective sport federations recognized by IOC.
I want tug of war back now!!!!!!!
You're not alone!
Artistic competitions were held in the classic Olympic Games. It's not as bananas as it sounds.
Absolutely. And with something like breaking (breakdancing) entering the games, it seems they are fine with moving more towards artistic options
Sports/events can be included in the future Olympics:
1. Netball
2. Downhill skateboarding
3. Tug-of-war
4. Obstacle course
Some amazing ideas in there.... I think nearly everyone in the comments or even offline I've talked to wants to see the tug-of-war return, I think it would be an instant hit at the Olympics!
Wait! Croquet is a brutal game of strategy! And bullying! My bigger siblings were mean!
LOL it sounds like we had similar experiences with croquet growing up
You should make a list of non-olympic sports that could be very popular in the Olympic Games. For instance, Dodgeball, could be exciting to watch. Maybe I'm stretching it to much, but I think Paintball could be quite entertaining, too. Parkour is another example. I'm actually surprised France didn't consider it for these games, at least as an exhibition. They have world championships and they're very entertaining.
I made a video and posted to the channel about the Top 10 Viewer's Choice picks for new events, so that covers off a little bit of that, but I get your idea. The way I put it is this: we need an event somewhere between the Olympics and Red Bull. Like it has all these unique, niche events, but they are put on by a host that isn't a caffeine-fueled frat boy. So Red Bull style events, but with the pristine organization of the Olympics
I’d like to see a combo event of arm wrestling/child custody hearings type event.
What an unlikely, yet highly intriguing, mash up
Equestrian events are the only ones where men & women compete equally w/ & against each other , both team & individually . ( Thank you Lis Hartel , 1952 dressage medalist ! ) Other sports should offer the same opportunities .
That would make for a very interesting Olympics! I think there are a couple others where the men and women aren't that far off each other, such as archery and shooting, but I could be wrong
@@voxathletica They already compete equally in those events at many levels . ( My husband competed in sporting clays & saw more women competing each year . ) Looking at women's sports stats , many women are competing equal to the level of men's accomplishments - thinking of women's college & pro basketball in particular .
@@voxathletica Women are flat out better shooters and archers due to hand eye coordination and ability to reduce "body shake". It's the only Olympic sport where the open division is not the men's division.
trap shooting was mixed at 1st but a woman won and men freaked out so rule change
they will never have open mixed sports for one reason the women will never even qualify
if they was to have a men vs woman football team where men played full tilt my guess triple figure scoreline,
they asked serena williams why she did not play andy murray she told the woke reporter because i would lose 6-0-6-0 in 15 mins
@@cynthiajohnston424 really and just remind me how many women are in the NBA?
and how long will WNBA last without the money given to them by the NBA as no team has NEVER made a profit. keep dreaming
Change dueling to quick draw. Add Red Rover and bull riding.
Now THAT would bring in some more fans
Yeah exactly, I think it's a cool concept too. It's a different strategy, especially the longer the time frame
For exampe, 24 Hours of LeMans auto race.
I could not stop laughing! The commentation is hilarious!!! LOVE IT!!!
Glad you LOVED it, thank you! Hopefully you find the other videos equally awesome :)
Pigions: this is an example of what good marketing and image making can deliver...
What are pegions? Or is that pigeons?

Laughter is the best medicine, right?
Bmx? Skateboarding? Break dancing? Synchronized swimming? Synchronized diving? Ice dancing? Golf? Bleah!!! 🤮. NONE of these should be in the Olympics.
I think we are all on the same page about breakdancing. In fact, I'm posting a video next week which is JUST about why breakdancing should not be in the Olympics, it's that bad
@@voxathleticaYou should keep in mind that breaking is a novelty addition to the Paris games. Like karate at the Tokyo ones. It won't show up for future games.
Also why being so ridiculously gatekeeping, close-minded and clearly clueless? What is an Olympic sport to you? The amount of strength and endurance needed in synchronized swimming and diving is way more than say something like shooting or archery.
@@dundee6402 Thank goodness for that
Why not? They take athletic skill and they’re competitive. What do you think should qualifies something to be an Olympic sport beyond that?
imagine you died with the legit claim you where the only person EVER watching Olympic Croquet. I love the idea that there where just 10 athletes, one dude tracking scores, one visitor and all 12 went to party after the Olympic Croquet event was done, or (kinda more hilarious to me) they all just kinda awkwardly went their seperate ways after the medals where handed and everyone just roaming around for a while, not knowing where to go from there
Imagine being that lone spectator. Everyone at the time probably thought you were the biggest loser, but history will rank you as a legend. You literally got to see something that no one else in history did, that's historic. And yeah, the after party would probably have been wild lol
omg!!!! bring back dueling pistols!!!!!!
It's got more than a fewer supporters, that's for sure!
The standing broad jump for people and for horses.
Should the people and the horses compete separately or at the same time? I can think of pros and cons to both lol

@@voxathletica Seems to me if they're willing to add things like breakdancing and rock climbing, they could easily add paintball or airsoft. It would basically be a modern, popular sport *and* a historic sport played with modernized equipment at the same time!
Poetry and Auto Racing should both be on this list.
It's interesting you mention poetry, a lot of viewers have commented about the inclusion of the "mind sports" like art, chess, etc. In this modern age, the idea is to establish athletics with your body alongside the athletics of the mind. It's a fair debate that can be had
@@voxathleticaThere’s the Mind Sports Olympiad, which has everything from Poker to Chess.
Woodcutting could be a good Olympic sport - it's athletic and pretty interesting to watch. I feel the ancient Greeks would have approved of seeing blokes just going to town on their logs (no innuendo intended - okay, some innuendo intended)
I think you're the first person to suggest woodcutting, but it's an interesting idea and yeah it kinda aligns with what the Ancient Greeks would have been into.

In cycling the 1KM track time trial is no longer an Olympic event.
That's a shame, I liked that sprint but maybe they took it out because it's too quick? They should have put the 12 Hour Cycling Race back in instead!
Pool, Snooker and Billiards
All good choices! At least one of them should be in
Anyone remember speed skiing? or ski ballet?
How could we forget those gems! I didn't include them because both only ended up being demonstration events at the Olympics and never got upgraded to proper, medal events, but holy goodness they were interesting!
Yeah, someone died during speed skiing.
Maybe they should have paintball instead of the pistol duel. Can you imagine, paintball teams shooting each other? That sounds very "contemporary olympics" to me.
Absolutely, if the IOC really wants to bring in modern viewers, especially younger viewers, this is the kind of stuff they oughta consider. Whether they would or not is another story!
You forgot town planning.
Technically it's included, it was under the Architecture section of the Art Competition that I placed at number one. I just didn't call it out specifically, though I should have, as who doesn't love some competitive town planning. Those 1936 games were wild in this category!
