I went to Toys'R'Us here in Australia back in 1999 to get a Mew. I was so happy, I collected all 151 Pokemon on my Red game! (I was 11 at the time). Then, a few weeks later, my brother grabbed my gameboy and ripped out my cartridge while the power was still on, wiping my save and deleting all of my 151 Pokemon that I had spent months catching and trading to collect. I was devastated. I'm amazed he got away without any loss of limbs.
When you started talking about the Nintendo Power Mew giveaway and showed that certificate you would get, I was suddenly reminded of a box of Pokemon memorabilia my older brother gave me. Inside it was the same Mew certificate that was shown in this video, meaning my brother was one of the winners for this giveaway way back then! I was always curious to know more about how my brother obtained his Mew and this video really did help explain that more, so thank you!

I'd say this is debatable. I remember times I had encountering multiple Spindas in the wild with the same facial patterns, I don't think there's physically enough pixels on the game boy screen for it's face to have over four billion patterns.

Actually!! The Smeargle, Cloyster, Ludicolo and Metagross can be picked up in the Gen 5 games if you do Mystery Gift via Nintendo Wi-Fi Club! I have all four of them and I received them this year because of DNS trickery

I'm pretty sure there was like a Chansey event that was terribly advertised in Japan that was the only ever event to give a Wish Chansey, so there's only like 50 legitimate Wish Chanseys in the world, and that was one of the most dominant Chansey sets for years in competitive play.
6:16 You can get a Dragonite under level 55 in sun and moon. To do this you will have to sos chain a Dratini in Poni Gauntlet. After catching the Dragonite it will be under level 55.
You can also get a super low level Salamence by SOS chaining a Bagon on Melemele Island, however Bagon's encounter rate in the early game is 1%, and then after you do *that* the chance of a Bagon calling a Salamence for help is again 1%. I remember chaining for hours just so I could catch a low-level Salamence, and I found a shiny Bagon first.
As an event collector, I love seeing these. I have all the TRU pokemon and gamestop events, expect old mew. One of the rarest American events to me are the New York city pokemon center events. I've been to most pokemon centers in Japan, but they give out events like candy there. No chance to get events form a pokemon center that no longer exists. Really sad I didn't have the means to go back then. I started collecting in gen 3 and the TRU mew got by chance, just came in one random day where they where giving away mew, it drove my need to collect them all. Also, I have those holographic dialga/palkia type charts, so, most likely from that event. It was so long ago to remember exactly.
SuperMomentai I'm an event collecter myself and it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE for me to find other event collecters willing to trade. I wish I could go to Japan to obtain some of those events. I managed to obtain the Lvl 50 Dragonite and even a GSC Hoothoot that knows nightshade. I know a guy who as well trades events but I can never find the right events to trade.

i got so happy when you mentioned the Dragonite!! I think that (and there was a TRU Deoxys as well, I think?) is the only TRU event I ever managed to get. It's really cool to know that it's rather rare--I think it's now on my USUM cart now. Wild to think it was that long ago.
Can confirm that holographic stat sheet was from the Darkrai event. The only two events I remembered making it to for gen 4 was Darkrai and the gamestop deoxys
it's pidgey. 7 generations all with pidgey available in them, pidgey being one of the most common pokemon in generation 1, they gained a mega evolution in generation 6, meaning people would have been breeding them like mad, drastically spiking the numbers of pidgey and well... it's birb jesus ffs.
The University Magikarp in Japan only had about 20, making that probably the rarest. But as far as NA releases go, yeah that sounds about right. Good vid.
So this is an old video, but I figured you may still be interested. By a twist of fate, I watched this video literally the same day I ordered a restored Toys'R'Us Dragonite distribution cartridge. The cartridges used to distribute them were all destroyed by having the pins cut longways down the cartridge through the plastic. The cartridge I am receiving was hand restored to working condition and can still distribute the event. Not sure how many of these still exist, but it's the only one I've seen. If you'd like, I can give you a TRU Dragonite since you never got one back in the day.

I was a huge event collector with around 900 events in my pokebank, and I owned around 90% of the pokemon mention. The rarest pokemon event I was trying to get before I quit during the ORAS days was the singing lalaport eevee which was an event in black and white and was one of the rarest events that came around at that time. I was willing to even trade 30 event pokemon for it in forums.
That first platinum Darkrai event takes me back man. I was so fortunate to check the computer that day! I didn’t have regular internet access back then but I just so happened to ask my mom if I could check my email that day and went on the Pokémon website too. I still have my event darkrai, who was a staple of my team in that game! Brings back so many memories!
I'll always regret never getting genesect. Also always wanted celebi ever since I was a kid (my favorite legendary) and since crystal is on 3ds now I can. It really is a special thing to me. Love it.
Thanks for mentioning that Toys R Us mew giveaway in 99. That event is probably the one I remember the most. When I was 14 that year, I asked my great grandmother to take me to that store for that giveaway. I saw a huge line, assuming they were all for that Mew Giveaway. Turns out that date was on Black Friday. As such that was my first exposure to that event XD I didn’t win Mew unfortunately but the memory of that early morning cold day still reigns in my Pokémon memories
I got that movie promotion Darkrai at a Toys R Us when I was 8. I remember being so excited for it, lol. Sadly I lost the game cartridge the Darkrai was on a couple years later

I remember sitting on one of those coaches 19 years ago. There was a Mew event for R/B/Y at the Millenium Dome, so they had one parked just outside. Inside, they had the game hooked up to each seat. But, they were all in German.
You should do a video about the pokemon SPECIES that's the rarest / hardest to obtain. Of course taking glitches into account, so the winner's definitely going to be a pokemon from gen 5 or beyond since you can get all of the previous ones with glitches
Recently someone uploaded a save taken from a first gen game, that contains a legitimate ToysRus Mew from 1999. People have been starting to save saves containing legit event pokemon in order to keep them from battery death as there's no way to save gen1 and gen2 pokemon by transfering them onto newer gen game cards containing flash saving. As a side effect, you can obtain those pokemon more easily now through somehow loading those saves back onto original cartridges (I recommend switching out the battery before doing that). For people being able to access their save data on the 3DS, they could even put those backup saves onto ther 3DS for using on the digital re-releases and then use the pokeporter to transfer those pokis onto modern games.
That gen 4 spacial rend Darkrai brings back memories. My birthday is June 4th and I was supposed to get Pokemon Diamond (My first ever video game) on my 7th birthday (2008) but because of Darkrai, I got it early because my brother convinced my parents to give me the game on June 1st so I wouldn't miss the event! Thanks, Darkrai for starting my pokemon adventure early! My brother knew everything about Pokemon back in the day, he even had one of the mew certificates. Now that we're older I'm the pokemon nerd of the family, oh how times change.
Surprised the Notched-Ear Pichu didn't make the list. While, certainly, it had a wide availability window, unlike all the other events from Gen III-onward, you can't transfer it forward. This means that in order to still have it, you would have to have gotten the event when it happened, and then never started a new save file.
I REMEMBER ENTERING THE NINTENDO POWER MEW CONTEST. I was so, so upset over never receiving anything back. I wanted a Mew so bad & by the time I found out about the Mew glitch in Gen 1, FireRed & Leafgreen were about to come out.
Interesting to know about those very rare events to the point where we can never catch those pokemon again. But still we have access to it through glitches in generation 1 virtual console, but for those looking for legit mew, you can get that special edition coming with pokeball+. The pokeball+ will end up being a useful item after that.
Old Sea Chart Mew would be one for Japan. Pretty sure they had a dragon rage magikarp that’s really rare too.Can you do a video on their rarest events? Another rare event for us is Wish chansey. Most probably evolved them to Blissey. And the PCNY events from gen 2.

I have a Toys R Us Mew! The event was different in the UK though, the OT is “Aura” and the only prerequisite was to have a free space in your party. It was august 2007 I absolutely begged my mom to take me because toys r us was so far away from me 😭 but it was a fun little event aimed at children with lots more to do than just a distribution

Chris bromley-west I had did the same thing, I bought a used pokemon ranger game with an Unobtained manaphy egg, guess I was little luckier that I got a shiny manaphy that way, but I did reset the game and noticed that I could get a new egg that way as well..... so.... you van basicly farm manaphy that way, so mythical my ass 😂
@@trueredpanda1538 Um, you can't get Shiny Manaphy that way. Manaphy is only once per save file, which is why despite being a possible shiny: any shiny Manaphy is 99% likely to be cheated in some way.
Out of all these I have the Pokemon Rocks Metang (still haven't evolved it yet...) and the TRU Manaphy. One cool thing about the Metang is that it has a National Ribbon, because at that event there was a demo of Pokemon XD in which you could battle against a Shadow Metang. The idea was that you'd catch the Metang in the demo and then you'd get it for your regular game. (I ended up getting the Metang first before doing the demo).
Hey Tom, if yours is a self-obtained ROCKS Metang, the guys over at Project Pokemon would love to take a look at it. They coordinate an event Pokémon preservation effort, and certain Gen 3 distributions haven't been so easy to find, including the Metang.
Dude I got the Worlds09 Weavile! I still remeber getting it from a lottery in an unofficial tournament here in Indonesia. The tourney host traded it to me for free. At the time idk whats so special about it (I get that its an event Pokemon but idk if it was THAT special). It is now sitting on my PC box in Pokemon Moon (yeah I dont continue on to USUM nor Galar)

The Manaphy that you can get from Pokemon Ranger is pretty rare since you're only able to get one per game cartridge (even if you reset you're unable to get another Manaphy to send over.) For awhile it was one of the only ways to get a legit Manaphy in your game. Nintendo did do a giveaway of the legends, including Manaphy, to celebrate 20+ years of Pokemon, but before then people would have to grind in Ranger if they wanted to get one.
I have the ToysRUs Darkrai AND Mew!!! I had no idea they were that rare! I'm sure to treasure them even more now. ...Though I made boxes of clones of my Mew back in the day because of Emerald's easy cloning glitch, so a part of me doesn't see it as rare. 😅
Oh hey, the only one I have from this video is the Toys R Us Dragonite! I immediately blew its level up with rare candies and taught it a bunch of TMs.
Well some are just plain impossible to get now, since I don't hack, I spend a lot of time ranching glitchless Mew, and if like getting just one, that one is the one I've spent the most time one, but I can reset the game and get another in a few weeks, once I get 460 Pokémon in my copy of diamond. I am yet to get a Rayquaza, but I bet I will eventualy get one in Ultra Moon, but gettin another one would be veeery time consuming, don't think I will reset my Ultra Moon anytime soon, and I don't know how many hours it would take to speedrun a Rayquaza, but those 5 in the end of Ultra Moon/Sun, would be my bet for the obtainable ones. Great info by the way. Remember reading about the Mew when I was playing blue, but never got the chance to get there, maybe just as well since my blue was out of power in 2010

Literally any Spinda is the rarest Pokemon, they all have a different pattern, and there are 4,294,967,296 patterns.

Yep. I reset my Black Save File to play through the whole game with a team of legitimate Mythical Pokemon through the DNS exploit.

I encountered a lvl 17 Dragonite this way, haha. However this was not possible in the previous gen when this event took place.

lets go also had wild dragonites in the post game whose level is around that of the area, I got a lvl 3 dragonite.
Y'all aren't putting into fact that BACK THEN IN diamond pearl platinum days the only way to get a dragonite is only level 55

it's pidgey. 7 generations all with pidgey available in them, pidgey being one of the most common pokemon in generation 1, they gained a mega evolution in generation 6, meaning people would have been breeding them like mad, drastically spiking the numbers of pidgey and well... it's birb jesus ffs.
The University Magikarp in Japan only had about 20, making that probably the rarest. But as far as NA releases go, yeah that sounds about right. Good vid.

So this is an old video, but I figured you may still be interested.
By a twist of fate, I watched this video literally the same day I ordered a restored Toys'R'Us Dragonite distribution cartridge. The cartridges used to distribute them were all destroyed by having the pins cut longways down the cartridge through the plastic. The cartridge I am receiving was hand restored to working condition and can still distribute the event. Not sure how many of these still exist, but it's the only one I've seen. If you'd like, I can give you a TRU Dragonite since you never got one back in the day.

I was a huge event collector with around 900 events in my pokebank, and I owned around 90% of the pokemon mention. The rarest pokemon event I was trying to get before I quit during the ORAS days was the singing lalaport eevee which was an event in black and white and was one of the rarest events that came around at that time. I was willing to even trade 30 event pokemon for it in forums.

That first platinum Darkrai event takes me back man. I was so fortunate to check the computer that day! I didn’t have regular internet access back then but I just so happened to ask my mom if I could check my email that day and went on the Pokémon website too. I still have my event darkrai, who was a staple of my team in that game! Brings back so many memories!

Thanks for mentioning that Toys R Us mew giveaway in 99. That event is probably the one I remember the most.
When I was 14 that year, I asked my great grandmother to take me to that store for that giveaway. I saw a huge line, assuming they were all for that Mew Giveaway.
Turns out that date was on Black Friday. As such that was my first exposure to that event XD
I didn’t win Mew unfortunately but the memory of that early morning cold day still reigns in my Pokémon memories

I got that movie promotion Darkrai at a Toys R Us when I was 8. I remember being so excited for it, lol. Sadly I lost the game cartridge the Darkrai was on a couple years later

The rarest pokemon is the one you form a bond with, it makes that pokemon one of a kind, the only one in the whole world like that.

I have one of those Mews somewhere in one of those cartridges...my Dad took me there. I remember there were a lot of older adults there too who were trying to trade me shinies or other things for my starters or something like that, but I refused them all haha.

I remember sitting on one of those coaches 19 years ago. There was a Mew event for R/B/Y at the Millenium Dome, so they had one parked just outside. Inside, they had the game hooked up to each seat. But, they were all in German.

I actually have the lv50 dragonite still. Its the first thing I bring up when pokemon fans talk about events haha.
You can still download all the event Pokemon (including location exclusives) in gen 4 and gen 5 if you look in the right places

Yo I actually have that Manaphy, and it's the only event I've ever been to. I didn't know it was so rare, only being available for 3 hours!
Recently someone uploaded a save taken from a first gen game, that contains a legitimate ToysRus Mew from 1999. People have been starting to save saves containing legit event pokemon in order to keep them from battery death as there's no way to save gen1 and gen2 pokemon by transfering them onto newer gen game cards containing flash saving. As a side effect, you can obtain those pokemon more easily now through somehow loading those saves back onto original cartridges (I recommend switching out the battery before doing that). For people being able to access their save data on the 3DS, they could even put those backup saves onto ther 3DS for using on the digital re-releases and then use the pokeporter to transfer those pokis onto modern games.
I'd say from my experience with generations 5, the Blue Flare Reshiram and Bolt Strike Zekrom event was unknown to most people I know.

That gen 4 spacial rend Darkrai brings back memories. My birthday is June 4th and I was supposed to get Pokemon Diamond (My first ever video game) on my 7th birthday (2008) but because of Darkrai, I got it early because my brother convinced my parents to give me the game on June 1st so I wouldn't miss the event! Thanks, Darkrai for starting my pokemon adventure early!
My brother knew everything about Pokemon back in the day, he even had one of the mew certificates. Now that we're older I'm the pokemon nerd of the family, oh how times change.

I’d love to see a “Top 10 most Common Pokemon” to see which ones can be found in the most games in the most routes/areas, maybe by generation.
Surprised the Notched-Ear Pichu didn't make the list. While, certainly, it had a wide availability window, unlike all the other events from Gen III-onward, you can't transfer it forward. This means that in order to still have it, you would have to have gotten the event when it happened, and then never started a new save file.
I actually have the Abrams Cloyster on my black version, and I also have the worlds 2011 Scrafty they gave away as well, same cartridge
I REMEMBER ENTERING THE NINTENDO POWER MEW CONTEST. I was so, so upset over never receiving anything back. I wanted a Mew so bad & by the time I found out about the Mew glitch in Gen 1, FireRed & Leafgreen were about to come out.
I went to one of those early gen events. I had an official artist draw me a Beedrill. My friend got Zapdos.
The 2008 Darkrai and probably most of the other Event Pokemon were also available in Germany up until 2014 at so-called Pokemon Days.
My uncle got that Celebi, when he got older he have me the game. I still have it on Pokemon Silver today.
Interesting to know about those very rare events to the point where we can never catch those pokemon again. But still we have access to it through glitches in generation 1 virtual console, but for those looking for legit mew, you can get that special edition coming with pokeball+. The pokeball+ will end up being a useful item after that.
Old Sea Chart Mew would be one for Japan. Pretty sure they had a dragon rage magikarp that’s really rare too.Can you do a video on their rarest events?
Another rare event for us is Wish chansey. Most probably evolved them to Blissey. And the PCNY events from gen 2.

I have a Toys R Us Mew! The event was different in the UK though, the OT is “Aura” and the only prerequisite was to have a free space in your party. It was august 2007 I absolutely begged my mom to take me because toys r us was so far away from me 😭 but it was a fun little event aimed at children with lots more to do than just a distribution

Celebi? you do realise right? celebi is one of the most common ones now xD a mythical pokemon that you can obtain just by beating pokemon crystal? and on top of that shiny hunt? yes please i'll be buying pokemon crystal. manaphy's a bitch though. i was lucky enough to buy a pre owned copy of ranger where someone didn't claim the egg soooooo lucky me i guess xD
Chris bromley-west I had did the same thing, I bought a used pokemon ranger game with an Unobtained manaphy egg, guess I was little luckier that I got a shiny manaphy that way, but I did reset the game and noticed that I could get a new egg that way as well..... so.... you van basicly farm manaphy that way, so mythical my ass 😂

@@trueredpanda1538 Um, you can't get Shiny Manaphy that way. Manaphy is only once per save file, which is why despite being a possible shiny: any shiny Manaphy is 99% likely to be cheated in some way.
Out of all these I have the Pokemon Rocks Metang (still haven't evolved it yet...) and the TRU Manaphy. One cool thing about the Metang is that it has a National Ribbon, because at that event there was a demo of Pokemon XD in which you could battle against a Shadow Metang. The idea was that you'd catch the Metang in the demo and then you'd get it for your regular game. (I ended up getting the Metang first before doing the demo).
Hey Tom, if yours is a self-obtained ROCKS Metang, the guys over at Project Pokemon would love to take a look at it. They coordinate an event Pokémon preservation effort, and certain Gen 3 distributions haven't been so easy to find, including the Metang.

Dude I got the Worlds09 Weavile! I still remeber getting it from a lottery in an unofficial tournament here in Indonesia. The tourney host traded it to me for free. At the time idk whats so special about it (I get that its an event Pokemon but idk if it was THAT special). It is now sitting on my PC box in Pokemon Moon (yeah I dont continue on to USUM nor Galar)

The Manaphy that you can get from Pokemon Ranger is pretty rare since you're only able to get one per game cartridge (even if you reset you're unable to get another Manaphy to send over.) For awhile it was one of the only ways to get a legit Manaphy in your game. Nintendo did do a giveaway of the legends, including Manaphy, to celebrate 20+ years of Pokemon, but before then people would have to grind in Ranger if they wanted to get one.
I have the ToysRUs Darkrai AND Mew!!! I had no idea they were that rare! I'm sure to treasure them even more now. ...Though I made boxes of clones of my Mew back in the day because of Emerald's easy cloning glitch, so a part of me doesn't see it as rare. 😅
Oh hey, the only one I have from this video is the Toys R Us Dragonite! I immediately blew its level up with rare candies and taught it a bunch of TMs.
Well some are just plain impossible to get now, since I don't hack, I spend a lot of time ranching glitchless Mew, and if like getting just one, that one is the one I've spent the most time one, but I can reset the game and get another in a few weeks, once I get 460 Pokémon in my copy of diamond. I am yet to get a Rayquaza, but I bet I will eventualy get one in Ultra Moon, but gettin another one would be veeery time consuming, don't think I will reset my Ultra Moon anytime soon, and I don't know how many hours it would take to speedrun a Rayquaza, but those 5 in the end of Ultra Moon/Sun, would be my bet for the obtainable ones. Great info by the way. Remember reading about the Mew when I was playing blue, but never got the chance to get there, maybe just as well since my blue was out of power in 2010
