    I recently bought the GoPro Hero 8 but it was a hard decision between it and the Osmo Action. To me, the sound and image quality are better on the H8. Hate the fisheye look and the H8 linear mode works well with other features. I was spooked hearing some H8’s froze while shooting but no problems so far. Don’t need a front facing screen, never shoot myself vlog style. Yes, the lens is not replaceable but I bought a great aluminum cage for $18 that protects the lens. I also can screw on ND filters as needed. Keeping my fingers crossed no major problems up ahead but am glad I made the decision for the Hero 8. Great review though!

      Hero 8 better for low light. No need front screen if u don t like people to see u and the h8 is smaller.

    i have the DJI action and the Hero 7 Black, the action I use way more often because, turning off of the hero is so painful you have to hold the button down for ages before it turns off the action is a simple 1 press on and 1 press off or quick record is even easier. Great content thanks

      On the Hero 8, you can have the camera off and just press the record button and it will turn the camera on and record. Then press stop recording and it will turn off the camera. I wonder if the hero 7 can do that?

    Very good comparison. But the one point that makes OA a better camera when compared with GP8 or GP9 is the fact that it does not freeze.

    • @DavidManningvlog

      I'm amazed that the freeze issue isn't mentioned more often. With the media mod for an external mic, freezing is even more of a pain because to remove the battery, you first have to remove the camera from the mount, then remove the media mod, then remove and reinstall the battery, then put the camera back in the media mod and then put the camera back on the mount. Given the frequency with which this is necessary, I no longer use my Hero 8 at all.

    Nice review, but think it’s fair to mention the extra functionality that GoPro labs brings with its QR code settings and delayed starts. As a user of both I agree the Osmo has the much nicer UI and screen. The GoPro interface is clunky in comparison, however for image whilst the osmo has better colours the Gopro has a lot more detail in the image. This is very noticeable for instance with grass and foliage. GoPro stabilisation is better, osmo now with less lag has less stabilisation as well. But... as you say both are great cameras, they just have different strengths.

    Had an Osmo Action from launch and have loved watching it get better and better with updates. And since the Gopro Hero 8 came out with a non replacement lens cover, it's just a no brainer to me. Osmo Action every time for me. 👍

  • @Rhoenschrat
    @Rhoenschrat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Actually I also did a test video about the Osmo Action two weeks ago and for me it failed. But my focus was on using the Osmo Action in a motovlog setup.
    The only thing where I see an advantage for the Osmo was the removable lens cover that you also mentioned. This is really a bummer on the Hero8.
    Regarding the field of view the Osmo not only misses the different options - especially the Super View - but it also massively crops in the picture if you enable Rock Steady. And even more if you also enable the mode to straighten the image. But this is also what you mentioned - you still would prefer the GoPro for POV shots which motovlogging is most of the times.
    The other bad thing for me was the mic adapter. And you need to know that I hate the one from the GoPro. But with its build in compressor and limiter it does a way better job with the microphone in my helmet than the one from the Osmo does. I also loved the size of the Osmo mic adapter. But as easy as it flips into the camera as easy it flips out of it. I really must fix it with a rubber band to prevent it from popping out of the camera while riding and ending up without my voice recorded.
    For the way you are using the camera I fully get you arguments. But for other use cases it can be totally different.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're totally right and we don't have just one BEST camera yet! The Osmo Action is better for all around, but the GoPro has that Superview that's unmatched. For now unfortunately, I'll be using two action cameras!

    The built-in lens cover is a deal breaker for me on the 8. My H7B has gone through 3 so far and I just use it for city cycling. I've since switched to the Osmo and love it.
    As for the mics, you have to use a foam wind screen on any action camera if used outdoors. I just use an external mic and sync in post.
    Great content and glad you picked the Osmo!

  • @AnotherWatchChannel
    @AnotherWatchChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with many of your points. If your not a critical professional, the gopro hero 8 is very easy to use. My family videos and daily adventures are stunning. The reasons I got the Action is due to 3 main things. First the front screen, yes GoPro has it, sort of, but it will run $160 total (the media mod and screen mod if it ever comes out). Second affordable mic adapter that works with the included cage, again GoPro media mod ($80) or their brick ($50) and the extra housing ($18). Third replaceable lens, this one is self explanatory. Not to mention I was not fond of the odd orange hue that the newer GoPro lines all seem to have, I don't know if that is just how people are grading their footage but it looks really off in a lot of videos I have seen. What I would LOVE to see in a v2 of this, or maybe a different model name, is a 1 inch sensor and swappable lenses, maybe call it the Osmo Director. Yeah it wouldn't be an action cam anymore but think of all the uses you could have with a small form factor mini DSLR-esk camera. And yes I got mine for $250 from Amazon. As for the lag I never notice it honestly, but I only use it to frame the shot and never really look at it beyond that.

    After months of wishing I had the Hero8 (thanks David) I finally got one on sale during the Coronapocalypse and you go back to the Osmo? LoL! Somehow, I'm not mad. I've been thinking about the OSMO for a little while now, my hero 7 does nothing but piss me off! Every Fking time I get into a recording session the damn thing locks up, won't record, wont turn off. I'm so done with gopro because of this wide spread problem. Sure, when it works it's good, but when it don't........ I keep the battery door off the thing now cause it locks up so often! On the flip side, I think is OSMO is due for a hardware/mechanical update. We can do more in the same price range. But at $250.00, I think I'd grab an OSMO regardless.

    Well after swallowing my last drink of KoolAide, the DJI looks badass now to me! All your points are very sharp. I want to add to the point of using the GoPro rear screen in the field- I put a glass screen saver on from the advice of many (and it already protected/saved the rear screen) BUT it is a real frustrating challenge to use the rear touch screen. I cannot change screens/menus on the first try ever. I have had to walk away in rage when I have missed so many shots because of this. I have XL hands and manipulating that rear screen, battery door and the frickin SD card. Forget it. I have to use an object for the SD no matter what. I would agree, but I think a better option is the insta 360 1r. It’s way better because it has 360. But the hero 8 is cheaper. On GoPro’s website it’s 250 if you get a free trial for GoPro plus. The GoPro display mod is coming out next month. I would still choose the hero 8 because of the presets. It makes such a difference. Love the vids!

  • @yafilmDOTcom
    @yafilmDOTcom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just ordered the GoPro 8.
    I really wanted to order the DJI Osmo Action camera, but when I went to Amazon I did what I always do before I buy a new product, read what the people that gave it one star has to say. There was two negative reviews that caught my attention above all other bad reviews and they were:
    1. The device requires activated. Yes. Before you can use the device you have to go through a process to activate it (which the reviewers calls it a lengthy process) which requires setting up a DJI account.
    and
    2. I wasted a couple hours on it, used up my "five attempts" and was left with an unusable camera. I'm not joking - the manufacturer gives you five attempts to start the camera up, install the software, and get it working. If you fail to do so, it shuts down and will not let you do anything.
    Okay, that second one was even more troubling for me. It appears that the camera literally gives you five attempts to activate it and if you fail the camera bricks itself, possibly making the only remedy sending it back for a full refund or an exchange unless a user doable solution exists for this type of issue.
    The fact that the DJI Osmo camera NEEDS activation before it can let you use it is troubling for me and its a deal-breaker for me. This is not worth the cheaper $249 you can get this camera on Amazon right now. I have always been fiercely against having my hardware disabled or locked out by software. It appears that on DJI's forums there are many people that come complaining that they are unable to use their DJI products before they can activate it. At the bare minimum, I would expect a camera I purchase to be ready to record or take pictures the MINUTE I insert an SD card in it and charge its battery or plug in a USB cable. PERIOD! I should not be expected to go thru an activation process with a ridiculous 5 attempts allowance before I can use the camera.
    I am not willing to own a device that is entirely at the control of the manufacturer, a device that perhaps in the future it can be arbitrarily disabled for many future reasons such as letting 3 firmware update pass by without installing an update -- let's face it, you won't be installing software updates/firmware updates all the time and each and every time a new update comes up for your camera, if the camera is working properly, there are no issues, chances are you are going to keep on using the camera without updating its firmware, in other words, you won't be fixing what is not broken at the risk of possibly introducing new bugs that weren't there in the first place, the only exception to this would be to have access to new features that was introduced with the new update that you care to have. Now, I am not saying that DJI does this or will be engaging on this type of behavior, but they already have full control over your device, control over your camera has been transferred from you (the owner) to the manufacturer (and I am so against this practice that I avoid any device like this out of principle alone), so it would not surprise me if in the future DJI starts disabling the Osmo Action camera until you install the latest firmware update after a certain firmware update has passed by without you checking for and installing the update.
    TLTR;
    1. The Osmo Action Camera requires a forceful activation before you can use the camera. (If you think you can just insert an SD card, charge the battery, press record button right out of the box and have it record without activating anything, then this is not the camera for you).
    2. The camera will brick itself if you were not successful at activating it within 5 attempts! (according to reviewers on Amazon)
    3 The mandatory activation before you can use the camera was a deal-breaker for me worthy of completely ignoring how cheaper it is compared to the GoPro 8 that I decided to go with the GoPro 8.

    • @TeeeJaay1225
      @TeeeJaay1225 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      well that's DJI being DJI, that 'activation' process is carried over from their drones, for drones yes i can understand the activation process, but for an action camera!? it should be ready to go out-of-the-box

    • @yafilmDOTcom
      @yafilmDOTcom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@easonreddy9406 DJI violates one of my principles which makes it a deal-breaker for me. Because of this, I was unable to consider DJI's camera as a viable option for me. I really like to own whatever devices I purchase, and by owning it I mean to have complete control over it, that I can recover from any situation using only my hands and my knowledge and that I don't have to deal with the manufacturer forcefully, having to wait days or weeks to send a product back and get a replacement for many reasons that product reviewers claims, one being that they failed to "activate their DJI camera within 5 attempts", therefore, the camera bricks itself, the only remedy? send it back. Umm no way, I can't tolerate something like that from a product supposedly that I own, I understand if I were to lease it, I don't expect to have control over something I lease, but for a product that it is said I 100% own and that I funded entirely off my own money? Something like this better not happens, I would be fuming if a product that I purchased were to brick itself because I failed to activate it within 5 tries.
      At the same time, reviewers complain that DJI's activation process is faulty, bug-ridden, which increases the chances of it not succeeding within the "allowed5 tries".
      As of not being able to replace the glass if I were to accidentally break the glass. Yes I can, the following youtube video explains how to do it:
      th-cam.com/video/00ElFww19wU/w-d-xo.html
      The replacement lens protector cost $15 on the website referenced by that youtube, but I am pretty sure if I start looking for it on Ebay or Amason that I could find it cheaper, but $15 is affordable at least. Being a person that does computer repairs for a living, I already have all the tools in my shop that I would need in order to perform this type of replacement.
      As for you saying that the Go Pro can freeze up, yes I have heard of other TH-camrs complaining about that, but my personal take on that is that there are many factors that can create a freezer up video, one being a worned up Micro SD card. With the ability to record at 100 Mb/s that can prove to be too much for the Micro CD card (even the ones labeled as "extreme" especially if you have already been repeatedly using it a lot. At 100 Mb/s you are going to fill out a 256 GB Micro SD card in like 4 yo 8 hours worth of video and these cards do not take very well too many re-write cycles. Personally, in my option, recording at 50 Mb/s is more than enough, especially at 1080P, and with HEVC mode on its good enough even for 4K videos. so that's the setting that I am using, I purchased a 256 GB Extreme Sandisk Micro SD card right away to replace the included 32 GB extreme card and so far I haven't seen any issues.
