    I got really lucky where I’m at now. We do a lot of residential/commercial new construction but 25% of the work is service also. So a little of everything!

    Im 34, I have an interview next week for a plumber apprentice position. You can learn enough in 5 years to own your own company!? I’m a very late starter, but ur telling me I can be a biz owner by the age of 40, I want in!

    Even though I'm an introvert, I've been learning to love doing residential work. You are the superhero that saves the day. You are doing your part on this earth to help people directly. Commercial and new construction might be better since you don't have to deal with a lot of customers but residential service work can be easier on the body if you are doing repairs instead of drilling through concrete all day. Sure, hauling water heaters isn't easy but it's a good workout 😁

    Past 2 months I've been thinking about getting into this field. I'm 20 years old, I've been through a year of college, its just not something I wanna go through, I wanna work, be an honest good hard working man, and have a stable carrier and a decent life. The plumbing trade seems to provide this opportunity. Thanks so much for all the educational content. Its given me the confidence of making moves to get in this thing. I'm thinking residential, non-union to get on the field for a while, then maybe 5-10 years down the line I can check for good opportunity on the union side of things.

    I would like to become a city inspector instead. It is stressful to run a business. I see all that my boss has to deal with like chasing checks from the builders, finding good employees he can trust, inventory, keeping us busy when it gets slow etc. Then I see plumbing inspectors just driving to different jobs and just making sure the job is up to code. I think being an inspector would be less stressful for me even if I dont make a lot of money. I don't know. I still have like 3000 hours left until I am ready to take my journeyman test.

    • @RogerWakefield
      @RogerWakefield  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jo The Great it is definitely less stressful. But the pay is usually lower too. I know some great inspectors that I think the world of. It is a great career too.

    Hi Roger,
    How important would you say non-plumbing related business knowledge is? The reason I ask is I am a 24 year old licensed plumber and I have been taking some accounting classes to cope with the boredom of a job loss.
    Thanks!

    I just don’t get the amount of time it takes to advance in plumbing.
    It seems pretty much impossible if I want to get into it when I already make a pretty good living, but also have bills to pay and a family to support.

    I had the chance of becoming an apprentice plumber when I was going through college in Idaho. I was working part time for the university with the journeymen that worked there and I absolutely loved the job. Instead however I decided to focus on my degree in automotive. I finished it and now I work for an OEM. Now, after three years of plugging numbers into spreadsheets, answering emails and building useless PowerPoint presentations, I regret not becoming an apprentice and actually doing something that could’ve helped have my own business. I’m 30 y/o now and just bought a house. Would it be too late to go back and be an apprentice? I would basically get my pay cut almost in half... and now, I would have to go and hunt for an apprenticeship job instead of it being offered to me, like 4 years ago. How long would it be after becoming a journeyman that you would advise starting a business?

    • @ShyMplsMale
      @ShyMplsMale 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say no. You can learn the business side of things by doing. Also, business owner forums on Reddit help and Udemy has courses as well. Learning through books can only go so far. All the time you learn about business can be better spent building a business.
