Unfortunately, the owner never contacted me back even though he said I got the job :=( However I actually got this great oppurtunity to work for a non union HVAC residential company! I start in 2 weeks as an apprentice making $16 an hour before training and $18 an hour after my 14 week training.
    They gave me a contract to sign where it laid out all the positions that I could be looking forward to in the future from Training Technician (Me) all the way up to Senior Service Technician making god knows how much money here in CA!

    I started plumbing about 6 months ago, total 180 on my career choices, I have a AAS in graphic design and a BBA in marketing.
    I'm honestly loving what I do, I wake up excited to do work! (not so much the past month, the company I work for is so unorganized, but I get excited if I do some actual pipework)
    I heard that Union workers do get much more money, but I also heard they can get laid off often, so I am up in the air about trying to join a Union right now. I do know that I love doing rough ins, working with trim and fixtures, and my least favorite is digging, I hate digging!

    • @RogerWakefield
      @RogerWakefield  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +inPHAMous, we all hate digging. And some companies struggle with organization. I have a young company and we are struggling to figure things out. But we are working, trying to get better every day. If you get in the union and work hard you’ll almost always have a job. No company is going to get rid of their best person. Not at any level.
      Glad you love plumbing. I’ve been doing it for 38 years and I still love it!!!

    For Veterans many jobs can have you leave with a Trade Apprenticeship completed and all your Journeyman time done. GI Bill will pay for apprenticeship. It means that you will start getting Journeyman's pay day one. Also look up Veteran's in Plumbing Program. Also look into the state you are going into. If they give Apprenticeship credit for Trade school then it pays to go for an Associates degree because the GI bill pays so much.

    Currently only 17 years of age right now, and I have been keenly interested in this career path for a good few years. I only have some welding experience, but I would like to expand my knowledge on becoming a licensed plumber for a company. Open to anything right now, but even though I am 17 I am trying to prepare for the upcoming adult years of my life. Do you recommend getting into an apprenticeship at 18-20 years of age is a little to early? I am really eager to start out as soon as possible, and currently wondering if 18 is too soon to try and jump right in. I look around at other plumbers and most where well over 18 before they started out in the industry. I feel as if experience is very important, going back to the value you bring a company that you were talking about. Great and very informative video!

    My dad tried to get me into electrician school as he was a journeyman but I didnt really want that. Im decent with basic homeowner plumbing type jobs from turn off valves and installing toilets and faucets etc.. Plumbing seems interesting and as a home owner all my reoccuring issues seem to be involved with plumbing haha.

    I am changing careers. Been trying, but not successful to find a local plumber to apprentice for. I have a lot of transferable skills, learned how to be a jack of all trades because my parents had a fixer-upper, and ready and willing to learn. The local union has had recent issues with embezzlement so I'm a little leery.

    Hey Roger, just subscribed! Love your videos. I need some advice, last November I joined the Carpenters Union here in Northern California through a military veteran program and I’ve been on the waitlist ever since, i’m number six right now. But I just got a job offer at a local plumbing company that’s non-union to teach me how to be a service tech plumber, the company has been around 10+ year so I know they are legit. I start this Monday but my question is if I get called up for the Carpenters Union should I go for that or stick with plumbing? I honestly enjoy both. Decisions! Lol.

    You started in plumbing at an open shop. When did you go into the union side of your plumbing career and does that increase your changes of getting accepted into their program?

    • @RogerWakefield
      @RogerWakefield  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maj3stik I went into the union 17 years after I started plumbing. They were recruiting and needing plumbers. I just got lucky on the timing! It doesn't increase your chances. They just needed plumbers and I walked in at the right time! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I got a job for a small shop with no more than 20 employees, as a helper, 2 days out of incarceration, I enjoy the trade and since the company is small it’s difficult to find help, resulting in my boss/owner tacking risks on me Putting me prematurely in charge or situations I probably shouldn’t have, but giving me rapid exposure and experience at the same time. He put me in charge of my own truck within 4 months after my start date. We do new construction and residential. I want to get my masters license and currently only have 13 months experience. I lay out roughs for new residential construction, at all stages as well as top outs and trims. I have done commercial jobs for restaurants and I steady encounter new things I have to figure how to navigate. I have my NCCER certificate from my time incarcerated but I’m at a pause on the next step in the processing. All info I have researched has been vague, is it necessary for me to apply for apprenticeship program while I work for this man? Or just gain another 3 years experience before I attempt to take the test?

    I've been doing construction in heavy civil setting for about 10 years now doing storm, water, and sewer for the last 7 or so. I was injured and in the process of recovering I've been thinking of going into an apprenticeship either plumbing or electrical. Still a physically demanding job but not quite as demanding. Do you think I'm underestimating plumbing and eletrical?

      Hello @Gti Pete thank you for subscribing! They can both be physically demanding but I think that could be good PT for you. If you're expected to make a full recovery I don't see any problems with either. I would check out both and find out where you can make the most money and get the best benefits in the long run.
