    1) Treat your customers like you belong to the same church or social club and you always want them happy to see you. It is a lot easier to get repeat business than it is new business. 2) Make sure the internet URL is available for the company name you have in mind, and get it! 3) Be reliable. 4) Take time to inform customers of the problem and how you'll fix it. The more interaction time you have with them the greater relationship you build with them and the more likely they will call you for the next job. 5) Observe and practice what the most successful plumbers (and other types of contractors) in your area are doing to get business. Likewise, observe why the least successful plumbers are not getting business and avoid those mistakes. 6) Get a good, catchy company graphic and logo. One that quickly comes to mind is, "We never bite our fingernails". People will remember that bit of humor.

    I have been a plumbing contractor in Oregon since 1996. Everything you said is true.
    A) Finding/creating good employees is very important.
    B) There is office work and field work. The office is very important but it is the field that makes the money.
    C) All your customers want a good price, quality work and the job done immediately. Of these three the one that is most important to the customer is timeliness. Scheduling can be very difficult, especially if your in construction.

    • @zerovalue5106
      @zerovalue5106 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scheduling is a pain. Where I work they don’t tell anyone no and that means we’re constantly pulling off jobs and jumping around which cost a ton of setup and breakdown time and as I call it “changing gears” to do different things.

    Thanks Rodger i always love your video's. Im a master plumber in pa, im also part of the phcc. I started a company 5 years ago and made a huge bundle of mistakes. Unfortunately im still making them, but less often. I wish i would have found your video's then, it would have saved me so many headaches. Im the guy that tries to do everything. Im currently trying to restructure to just do residential service. No one ever told me NOT to try and do everything they actually said the opposite I SHOULD do everything. So i have been and ive been burning my candle at both ends, and my sanity and business have suffered for it. If you would ever be open to it, id love to pick your brain and have you as a mentor. Anything to help me stop ice skating uphill would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your videos and all your info! Keep it up brother!

    Please make sure that you're properly insured before you perform any work. Look into general liability insurance and make sure you talk to your agent/broker/producer about the coverage you're buying. Quick tip: General liability coverage traditionally excludes damage to your property, your products and your work. Make sure you're familiar with your policy and what the exclusions mean.

      @RogerWakefield water testing after Halo 5 install are great. Water is almost perfect. Feel confident recommending to customers. I always stressed to any company I've worked for to use good products. I've always been of the opinion a perfect installation with a poor product and still don't have anything. ARS never listened to that. The big corporate plumbing companies are a different breed. Thank you again for all you do for our industry.

Then this pandemic started I didn't know what to do I could find a job with all the layoffs due to the stay at home order. Bill have just been paid this give me one month $6,000 I need to survive I used a mini van and drove all over the state its been 9 months now and I have a lot learning on the business aspect and worried about taxes. I made a lot since I started but dont have the profit quick books said I did. I know I spent a lot on growing with new van and tools. But my question is how do I keep from going under from not having taxes from mismanagement of funds or spending.

    In Texas, is there a license that a business owner has to have when they purchase an existing plumbing company ? The new owner is not a plumber, but a business owner. There is a RMP already working for the existing company. And then, what if the RMP quits, is fired or passes away ? How can they be replaced quickly ?

    Crazy how long it takes to become a master plumber in Wisconsin. 8,000 hours and a minimum of 4 years as an apprentice to become a Journeyman, then 1000 hours per year for 3 years to become a master. Both require tests as well.
    OR you can cheat the system and just have an engineering degree that has plumbing in the curriculum and take the test without any plumbing experience and become a master plumber immediately. Because that makes sense.

    Hi Roger, any tips on marketing on social media. I had a plumbing company for 15 years back when yellow pages and when google first came on the scene and I did great. I sold the business and moved to another state. Now I want to start another business from scratch and don't know the current trends that will work. Any thoughts?

    Roger, if I start an apprenticeship in Minnesota do I have to finish it here or can I move to a different state and continue you the same apprenticeship and hours?

    • @jklsr55
      @jklsr55 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very murky question. Each state has their own varying rules and regulations. It really depends on not only what Minnesots rules are but what are the requirements in the state you are wanting to move to. The number one thing you will need to lock down is an actual opportunity wherever it is you are wanting to be. The good news for you right now is the industry is in dire need of good, quality, capable young people that are willing to learn. That and live clean. No one will hire you if you have a DUI ridden driving record. Finding a good apprentice these days is hard. Be that good, dependable young person and you can write your own ticket...

    Hey Roger , do you need to get some type of insurance to cover yourself and ur company?

    • @DrFrankenschtein
      @DrFrankenschtein 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, General Liability insurance. In addition to that, I would talk to an agent to see if there are specific professional liability insurance policies available.

    What is the other invoicing system you use? I started my own plumbing company 4 years ago. Fortunately, there was no "sitting around." I've been using QB this whole time and despise it.
    Mistakes I've made: I took out a loan (tools, equipment, bought a ton of materials from a retiring plumber) when I first started, I should have also got at least a $10,000 line of credit. Sure, I had accounts at the supply houses, but when you have a $4,000 credit limit (my credit rating was just starting to go back up at the time I started my business, it has since gone down, but we don't need to get into that) and need a $5,000 water heater... (my mother and brother saved my butt quite a few times in the beginning, I'm very thankful.)
    I took out a loan on a used one owner 8 year old HD 3/4 ton truck with 180000 miles, 3 years and 29,000 Miles later, transmission goes out, that's a $5000 to $6,000 repair.....
    The best decision I made: purchasing brand new cordless Milwaukee tools when I first started. I use and abuse (not more than Manufacturers suggestions) them and when they break, I send them in and Milwaukee will repair or replace it. (Most of Milwaukee's cordless tools carry a 5-year warranty, double check before you purchase)
    I am a one-man operation at the moment. I desperately need to find a part-time secretary and a journeyman plumber but the pickings are slim here in Iowa. And I don't know if I want the stress of more mouths to feed.

    Is it possible to find a Plumbing consultant? There are no plumbers available in my area. I call them and they don't bother to return my calls.
    I can actually do alot of the work myself. My older brother was a master plumber so I know how to handle a wrench.
    It would be awesome if I could pay a plumber for consultation while I do the work.
    Is that possible?
    Thanks!
