3 years later this is probably by far one of the best podcasts out there by two of the most humble players. I revisit this when I am having a bad day or week of playing poker to ground me and give me some reassurance it's not all linear.

Hey Ben, great conversation, one thing from a "city boy" who had cousins who grew up on a farm. I think you are under the impression that on the farm you are just kicked back swinging in a hammock. That is only the case if you are super wealthy, if you grow up on a working farm you are going to be busy from sun up to sun down. You learn how to work hard and work smart. You learn how to prioritize, because if you want time for your self, you have to get the farm work done quickly and correctly. (smile) I stayed on the farm for a few summers and it ws tough at the time. BUT I am so grateful for the experience, it really helped me to become who I am today. I had no idea Jason K was a country boy

Jason Koon's interview for the I Am High Stakes Poker (in 2018) was probably one of the best and deep interviews with an accomplished poker player I had ever seen and had a huge impact on my mindset. Since then, I always look up to Jason as a person and poker player. Amazing podcast episode, as usual, thank you!

Just coming around to this video, great watch. I was on the beach w Koon in Melbourne after we both busted the Aussie Millions in 2012 and he was doing backflips while we had a convo about our biggest punts and future dreams. "We are gonna get there man" he said, referring to becoming the best in the game. What a privilege to have watched this guy do work over the last decade and a half and I'm sure there are many more highlight reel additions to come.

Great info.. only a few months into studying/playing seriously, and this is great, I've been leaning more towards playing as much volume as I can and playing at the limits then working on curbing bad habits/mistakes.
It's all about communication, information, deception, but most people are straightforward so it's like listening to what they say and responding the best way.

Great podcast once again, this is by far my favorite so far. It makes me realize a lot of stupid things I do when I play poker so I will try to be more mindful of that. I used to find that watching nose-bleed games and players massive successes discouraging because of my own small-time living at the game. So I stopped paying attention to that and focused on things more important, which helped a lot. Now it's shifted into watching bad regs streaming (and being honest about how good they are, but bad plays are bad plays), but having ridiculous 20k, 40k, or 100k days at times. Then of course when I lose my majors deep in unlucky spots it feels even more devastating. In general, I'm trying to stray away from focusing on other people's things and focus more on my own. As Jordan Peterson said, "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today." Hearing you guys talk about your upbringing and things you guys have had to work on is just fantastic. It really makes it down to earth and reminds me that there are a lot of things I need to improve on besides poker, especially not being too hard on one's self. I feel like I've aged too much from poker-induced stress. It's not good for the soul. So a very long-winded and probably douchey way of saying thanks for this podcast. Keep it up Benny boy.

  • @eyeq7730

I can relate to Jason with the flight or fight responses. I've only really became aware about five years ago that it was a real problem ,that most people I've come across in my life don't act/react like that and i'm no spring chicken. React is the the key word I suppose. I'm trying to be more aware of my reacting instead of responding, however every time it happens now, i'm kicking myself because it seems to be outside of my control until it's happened and pretty quickly I realize what has transpired, but the reaction has already happened. I think that not beating yourself up over it is a good start. Jason seems far from what he's describing about his younger self and I admire him for being open about it!

31:55 This is the reason I'm thinking about floating (in a sensory deprivation tank), I've been interested in meditation for years, but I still find it very hard to consistantly do it. Even when I know how much benifits it gives me! I've experienced them! It's still not a habit. I really want to make it a habit and and try out floating. I think it would be very interesting.
Have you every considered floating Ben? If yes, why would you try it or why wouldn't you try it?

So you are saying professional boxers can't become friends after having a boxing match or a football player or any pro sport person?

@@explorerturk well, I see a difference between zero sum games and games in which everybody wins. If I box a friend, we're both getting out winners. We win experience and or the match. In poker one of us loses out on time and money (= time). Poker is like chess but weaker players don't realize it and challange grand masters. All in all I don't mind the sportive side of poker at all and if my friends are happy to lose their money to me I also don't mind. I'm just pointing out the predatory nature of poker. If you play tennis against a weaker friend you don't harm him, ya know. But again it's all good if your friend doesn't see losing money as harm.

@@shikeridoo We are not talking about our social friends or childhood friends. We are talking about opponents we face daily on poker games or tournaments here and there is almost no difference with any other sports. Small club goes against big club, inexperience boxer goes against champion. I don't see any difference here. Anyhow everyone is free to think how they like.

I disagree with that sentiment. Poker is glorified entertainer. When losing players lose, its not that they lose money and get nothing in return, they get gambling rushes and experience. It's like saying paying $12,000 for a superbowl ticket is a scam because you get nothing for it. Life is about experiences and we trade money for those experiences
