In this video SINGLE STOREY EXTENSION #3 - DIGGING THE FOOTINGS, daily life continues on this extension build series. John takes you through the next couple of days where we see him sharing the Yanmar vio 17 digger with Tony as they show you how to dig footings. Also things don't go quite to plan when a neighboring tree means they have to dig footings to 2.5m deep as advised by the structural engineer. For safety reasons John explains the use of shuttering plywood and how to strengthen footings using shuttering before the concrete pour for the pillars to hold the concrete lintels. Ollie gets to work on hand digging footings to square them off and Joe is excavating old clay pipes and lead pipes. The guys get on the power tools and use the hammer breaker to break up concrete from the old footings.

Great digger skills guys. Harder than it looks. I had an lpg tank sunk in my garden last year and they left the digger for a few days with the keys inside.......I’m only human....jumped in and subsequently made a right muddy mess of my garden dicking around in it! Way harder than it looks 👌🏼🏴👍🏼

Great teamwork by all the guys and good tip there on setting out your pegs to allow the digger to get through, just goes to show someone's been around a while, but by the look's of that site I bet John wished he was in that nice podcast room. When are we going to see it getting some use?

I was wondering how the digger traversed the intersection where trenches meet in the corners - a couple of ply sheets as a bridge, eh? Never thought that would be adequate for the weight but clearly it is
Two and a half metres deep? Wonder how much the original house is standing on?
I just got my mini digger ticket I can't wait to start work but it's hard to get work when you have no experience and no one's willing to bring you on board to gain experience

2.5m a doddle.. We've been told dig 4m length for extension to 3m depth due to being close to public sewer. Any idea how long that takes?

Out of curiosity, instead of digging a footer at 2.5mtr deep, would under pinning be an option? In the Netherlands they pin absolutely everything but doesn’t seem to be a default here so I was wondering what the reason for that moght be?
When they hit the hard compact clay they should have called the BI back to review the depth requirement.
No temporary works considerations?
Nightmare, shame you couldn’t of got a 2.5 or 3t digger in there access looks tight tho. You should get some track mats, defo worth the investment. I use them all the time.

Surely you know about trees and foundations before you started digging?
If you dig any deeper you will probably strike oil! Imagine having to do it all by hand like they had to years ago Good video guys!++.

They are horrible things. Get massive. Just removed two massive ones in my garden. Took up about a third of the space

I've made a career out of climbing them, torn to shreds from briars, covered in pigeon shit and they are usually covered in ivy, 🙄🙄 God I'd love a nice clean oak or beech to climb over level clean ground with good access. Just for once, 😆🌲🇮🇪
