Sometimes a helper slows you down! My uncle had a fake (16 stick) pack of dynamite, made from cut broom sticks & painted red. He'd always pull it out when the homeowner wanted to help! "ROCKS!"
Years ago I had my own Backhoe business, John Deere 310A put over ten thousand hour the rig never wonce had a problem, especially with fuel pumps. The craziest job was I leveled the lots for the building pad, the owner laid footing out the structure, but was really funny the laid 2x6 20 ft along footing lines , both inside edge and outer edge of footings , back in early Seventies we only few size buckets, for backhoes, the footing called for 16 " wide minu. normal you dig it with 18 ' bucket. The home owner insisted it had to be 16" not 18" so finally had tell the home owner dig it buy had then that didn't go over well , finally the building contractor showed up and explained why. Keep the good work Chris.
That Yanmar runs quiet! I can hear the bucket scrape the screenings. 🙉 One other thing....barns are like highways..... by the time your done building em'.... they're not BIG ENOUGH! 😉😇

From this vid I learned boom up, stick in while grading with the blade keeps it from rocking and changing the grade level. Many thanks. I've only had a mini for 6 weeks. I'll never be as smooth as Chris.

Shit my dad asked me to help him remodel the restroom at his house 6 days later of him pretty much watching me telling me """how to do it""" I was like look old man go to the other room ended up cutting, laying and installing everything myself lol god bless fathers 😆
You should get a magnetic attachment for the laser level meter and put it on the boom Chris when you dig out footings or to a set depth.. that way you can see at a glance if too high, too low without having to stop / start all the time to check :)
wow, only a foot. Frost line is 4 feet here and a few years ago it got so cold over 3000 homes had their water lines freeze and the last one thawed in July.

I found your channel just prior to buying the exact Yanmar machine here to use to clear my farm. I wanted to learn your operating techniques to help me become more efficient and maybe make the learning curve not as steep. You have no idea how much you’ve helped me operate my mini ex more efficiently! I must say that, for me, the hardest task to do correctly is to raise the boom as I’m trenching. Keeping that hole level ain’t the easiest thing for me. I’d love to hear your thoughts as you’re doing a job like this in the future. Any and all help is greatly appreciated Chris! Thanks!
Must be so nice to do concrete where there is little to no frost. Those footing depths would never fly here in NH. We have to do four foot frost walls.
Wow the difference in building codes around the world. Here in the UK the minimum depth for footings is 1 metre & in soft ground like that or clay it's not unusual for building inspectors (local authority here in UK who have to sign off work) to make you go even deeper to 2 meters & sometimes even deeper (especially in clay) seen 3m on more than a few occasions.
12” frost line......Hahahahaha. That there is amusing to someone from up north.......shoot, I have frost heaves in my pole shed that are 5” or better most years.
Is concrete recycled, can you crush it up and add it to a new cement mix? It would be really cool to attach the camera to the bucket with a magnet mount.
Same here in Southern Alberta! In fact it’s not uncommon to go 8 ft. I know of guys doing a crawl space under their home and it cost the same as a basement! Once you go down 4 ft, another couple for a basement is cheap!! Very inexpensive square footage for a home. I know it’s no good for a shop, just a comparison though. My current home has a basement walkout where the “digging” was with explosives!!! No frost footings here! Built into the side of a mountain!! So to speak. It’s all pinned to the solid stone base. My shop is similar, but built up on one side due to the slope. They just set the footings directly on the stone and set concrete walls to fill with 3/4 crush and then once compacted the slab went on that! Very different for me to see. I’m sure I didn’t explain it well. I watch all my contractors so I can learn some skills, but do so at a distance and don’t help. It has also saved me when the contractor was not as professional as Chris is,,,,,. I didn’t watch the asphalt contractors on my home before this and it became a mess when it turns out they skimped on the asphalt and only made it look good. I was mean enough and willing to spend what it took to bankrupt them if I had to. Once they knew that, they came in and fixed the issues and went above and beyond in doing it right. It doesn’t hurt to be there some of the time. The contractors that are honest don’t mind because they have nothing to hide. Don’t just bother them though, they have other clients waiting. The contractors that have something to hide will try to get rid of you, or mess up right before your eyes. Then the uncomfortable part begins in discussing their shortcomings. I hate that but have only had 2 instances in about 40 years on the ranch. I think it is harder today. If they don’t like you there, set up a camera!!
"I can dig that" - sounds like something we said as teens in the early1970s. Good you are using the Yanmar Mini today and hopefully you are having maintenance done on the Volvo or Takeuchi. Put my LD18 sticker on my "hydraulic shovel" today. Good work on that little project.

Hey Chris I always put 2ft tails on my spray paint lines so I never loose the building line after it is dug.
That is the cleanest footer dig I have ever seen . And you were hitting grade by eye you and my buddy Rick are the only 2 I have seen do that .
That screenings set up nicely. Good packing has made it hard. Almost looks like it didn't need a concrete pad at all.
