Charge Tesla Model 3 in Cold Winter Weather on regular 110 / 120V outlet?!

  • Will the tesla charge on a regular wall outlet in the winter cold? For anyone like me who solely relies on charging their tesla model 3 on a standard wall outlet 110 / 120v 15amp level 1 basis, this video is for you. I wanted to test and see if the cold winter temperatures would affect the way the tesla charges in the garage and also outside when it was 22 degrees that night. You would be surprised on how well the tesla's battery accepts a charge not only in warmer seasons but also in the cold winter weather months. I used the regular nema 5-15 adapter plug from tesla to test these charging methods.

    Batteries are absolutely affected by cold temperatures. The ability of a battery to absorb current and charge is diminished in cold temperatures. However, 110V charging does not provide enough current to be negatively affected by cold-weather charging. If you were to do this test with a level 2 charger, you will see a difference.
    Great test though! Thank you for the video.

    I charge my 2018 Midrange on level 1 99% of the time, and I live in the frigid Midwest, doesn’t get any colder than my State. The coldest I’ve done so far is -15C/5F, same 5mph charging rate is achieved. I just purchased this year, so winter is winding down, will be utilizing my 14-50 plug in the near future though.
    Thank you for the video.

    Nice video guy. I've been wondering about this myself. Just picked up my M3 Saturday from Raleigh. I'm in Greensboro, so good to see someone near by so I can get an idea about charging with our weather. I'm actually in an apartment and waiting to get my garage here so I can charge, but it's obviously only 110/120

    great test, but that's where a heated steering wheel would come in handy. Avoid using the battery to heat the cabin. That's a lot of space to waste precious battery range to heat. And a nice shot of the taillights, I have a new MY and have never really seen my tail lights all lit up.

  • @mitchellbarnow1709

    We had a NEMA16-50 outlet installed in our garage, connected to a 50amp breaker that used to power a hot tub. It was cheaper than purchasing a wall charger from Tesla. It would’ve been nicer to charge at 48amps from a 60amp breaker. We’re limited to 32amps from Tesla’s 2nd generation mobile charger.

  • @willaerley7140
    @willaerley7140 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It makes sense. If you have any regen braking at all, you should be able to slow charge without heating the battery. I only lose all regen below ~15F

    Pretty cool, I was wondering about this myself. Do you preheat the cabin in the morning before you leave? I also have no Level 2 charging capability and I'd have to not only pay to have the line run, I'd probably also need to upgrade my breaker box from 100 to 200A. And then there's also the cost of the HWC... ugh...

    • @EMtesla1
      @EMtesla1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of the time i have my tesla in the garage, I don't usually preheat it. As i know the 110v outlet is not enough power to supply heat without running dow the battery. I'm cheap too, lol. I mostly only plug in at work (nema 5-20)

    • @mattcrumrine618
      @mattcrumrine618 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's cool. Unfortunately garage parking isn't an option (old house, small garage for a smart car I guess?) so I would have to charge on the side of the house regularly. But, at least you've shown that you can get at least SOME charge out of Level 1 charging... My commute is only 10 miles each way, so that should be manageable even if it has to heat the battery for a bit, I can still look forward to a decent charge in the morning

    Do you have two out of phase outs that you could plug into? Because you could make your own 6-20 240 volt outlet by utilizing the hot lead from each outlet. I used to have a Bosch washing machine that had two horizontal hot leads. It worked out great and I didn’t need an electrician. You can make your own box that has two extension cords to plug into the two out of phase outlets and one 6-20 receptacle. For $35.00 you can buy the 6-20 adapter for your mobile charger.
    Let me know what you think 🤔.

    at that rate it doesnt effect it ,, if you went to a super charger you would see a big difference ,, a cold batt will burn about 7kw sent to the motors to make heat to warm the batts up to take the super charger rate

    Paint your garage. Tesla red and grey ?
    Get a level 2 HPWC installed at home. It is not a big deal to get a 220 outlet run and then get the 14-50 pigtail for your mobile charger. Stop hogging the charger at work. Charge if you need it and then move the car.
