  • Could this be the best & the most comprehensive amp I've ever played? Can this do it all? And how it compares to The Bad Boy (Marshall JCM800 2203 from 1984) and 1987x Plexi.
    Thanks to MusiX for hooking me up with the amp.

    Best review of this amp on TH-cam. I have the same Mark V 90 watt going through a dual rectifier oversized cab. There is nothing that compares in my humble opinion. I get exactly what you are trying to say. Just watching the smile on your face as you talk about the Mark said it all. Thanks for a great review.

    The amp used by some of my all time favorite musicians. Sounds sick! It can be tight or give you sag. It can be really wide, but still mid-heavy.
    Also, your demos are the best amp demos on TH-cam imo. It’s awesome to hear a song in the beginning every time, cause you do it right so amp shines with it’s best.

    I’ve had a Mark V 90W for a decade, but your enthusiasm and playing on this vid was so contagious that I had to play with it again for a few hours right after watching this clip! 😁 What a brutally awesome and freakingly versatile piece of art this amp is 🤘🏻
    A cork-sniffer’s tip: For the very best-est tone for recording, hard bypass the fx loop with the switch on the back panel. Bypassing the loop circuit completely improves further the clarity and openness of the sound quite a bit, especially in high gain modes. And for recording you don’t really need the loop circuit functions for anything - especially when using a reactive load and IR’s . You’ll probably be adding the post-gain effects like delays in DAW anyway (just remember that bypassing the loop circuit bypasses the Output and Solo level controls as well, so if you’re plugged into a real cab, it will be LOUD with typical channel master settings…).

I just discovered your channel a few months ago. You popped up one day when I was looking at mods for my 85 JCM 800 4103 combo, I learned to lift the extra capacitor on the mid-pot to make it sound like a regular 2203. Euge, I am editing my comment because I felt I wasn't really acknowledging your excitement about the Mark 5. I have always been a Mesa Boogie fan and I was an owner of the original Mark 2C+. I know you make the 5 sound absolutely awesome. And I know it's one of the best amps out there. I just like the sound of my Marshall better. I would like to hear your Boogie and JCM800 together as stereo. I bet that would sound way awesome.

    With 34’s in it, I did a recording with the Edge setting on CH 2 that sounds easily as good and just like a ‘78 2203 I used to have. Also CH1 on a clean setting does an awesome hard rock sound if you max the gain, get the CH volume at about 2 O’Clock, set the treble fairly high, mids around 10-12 O’Clock and bass to just before it flubs. Also get the presence up a bit. Set the Overall Master volume to around 10-11 O’Clock and it’s just hard rock greatness. An Attenuator is a must to get everything out of this amp.

  • @Skoora
    @Skoora 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Absolutely fantastic amps. Owned one (90 head) for about 13 years. Much prefer it to the VII because of the flexibility in the clean to medium high gain tones alone, on CH 1 and 2. Sounds really good with 34’s in it too.

    Great video man. As other's said best Mark V video out there. It also doesn't hurt to have an 800/plexi kicking around for some A/B but I think its critical in understanding some of what the Mark V can do. Just bought one of these used 2 days ago for $1,400. It was built in 2012 and its an absolute time capsule, and 1/3 the price of new. Totally worth it.

    I stand by solid state guitar amps for the most part, but this is the one tube guitar amp that i actually have wanted for a very long time and possibly the only tube amp that i would ever own.
    There's no underestimating an amplifier that sounds good plugged straight in.

    You’re spot on about the clean channel having that “piano” like sound to it. John Petrucci has said many times that’s one of the reasons he loves the Mark V so much, because of that piano like clean channel!

    • @mswishe4

      That clean channel is great for arpeggiated lines! Alex Lifeson of Rush use to use the Mark V live, for his clean tone only.

    I can add some important info here. The kind of sounds heard here need a traditional style cabinet if you're going to use a cab. In my experience playing this amp for an hour, you need a Mesa traditional cab with specs closer to a Marshall 1960 cab to get the mids to ring like they do here. I was able to get a lot of great sounds from one of these amps, but not at first because I was playing it through a regular deep back rectifier cabinet that is better for scooped mids style metal. . Once I switched to the traditional cab (that I think was also called a rectifier cab), the amp sounded great. In my experience THAT is what you need if you want to get the types of sounds that you hear in this video from an actual 4 x 12 speaker cab.

But this time I did and along with this review I was able to get all the tones I needed straight away. Gigged it after just 2 days and it was awesome! Highly recommend this Boogie for guitarists that like more than one basic sound. A classic amp for sure.

      Part of the price is made in the USA where their employees make a living wage, plus if you use Mesa brand tubes there's no need for bias adjustments. Paying a competent tech to bias your amp after a tube change can cost a good chunk of money.

    • @nothingEvil101
      @nothingEvil101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrJam1001 Yes made in USA is fine and dandy, but they are actually A LOT more expensive than most amps that are made in UK, Germany etc, so that‘s not really the reason alone for their high prices

      @@nothingEvil101 Mesa Mark V 90 watt $2,549 Engl savage mark ll $3000.
      Those are USA prices at Sweetwater. If you live in Europe I'd say the Mesa boogie probably cost more though. If the country you live in is adding huge import taxes that's not really Mesa's fault vice versa goes for Engl's in the USA I suppose.

    Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet but try out hard bypassing the loop. It also bypasses the master volume for the whole amp so you'll have to set each volume to taste but in my opinion it sets this beast free. Really aggressive

    For my home studio i plan to have some great amps. I love amps. I love to play multiple amps together. I plan to try to find a Mark III, but after this demo, to have kind of a JTM45, kind of a plexi and kind of a JCM800, without exactly being it, i think i have to save money for a Mark V. Thanks, as always, for your great videos.

    Great review as always, brother! I used to have a Mk4 that I loved and a couple years ago a guy I was trading with put up his mk5 as part of the package. It is the only piece of that trade I have left! Lol! Absolutely love it....one of my favourite ever and I have owned and played pretty well all the top dogs. Best cleans I have ever used in a channel switching "big" amp, I use the crunch channel alot and like you say, I does an awesome jcm 800ish tone and then of course the 2c+ and mk4 modes are classic: tight, punchy and immediate. Add to that the simul-class, power scaling, rectifier options and it really is a swiss army knife amp that does everything well. Lifer amp for me (along with my Bogner 101b and Friedman be100) and I am glad it speaks to you! 🤘👍

    The Mesa Mark series are probably the only amps that are a way different flavour than Marshalls and I like them as much. The are different but the same in all the things that matter and the only amps that are as much fun to play for me. I've never played the Mark V but loooove the Mark iii and Mark IV (both can do Lukather, Sykes and Metallica tones easy).
