    Pro tip for any Mark V owners: wind up that global master up to about 3 o’clock and set your volumes really low on the channel volumes. Will sound way fuller and punchier than having the global low. Eliminates that mark v boxiness and anemic tone that people complain about.

    Kyle! This video TOTALLY cracked the code for understanding the interactivity of the channel tone controls and the gain. It's ironic that you have been somewhat reluctant to demo the Mark V, yet you perfectly outlined how to really dial-in the tone controls. The great Mark V tones have eluded me for years and your method is a gamechanger! I get it now!! Thanks for taking the time to make this!

    I've owned a lot of MK series amps and still have a MKIIC+ and a MKIV. The trick with them is to realize that the "normal" EQ is in front of the preamp, which means that it won't change your EQ as much as it will change the feel of the amp and the amount of gain and tightness. Most people run the treble knob on 8-10, middle on 0-6 and bass on 0-2. I almost always run mine with the treble on 10, which will make the amp as tight as possible. With the treble on 10, the bass and middle knobs won't do anything. It's like you're hitting your preamp with a pedal that has an EQ on it. You'd want more treble and almost no bass to get that tightness. You can then EQ the amp with the graphic EQ, which gives you a lot of options and is very sensitive.

    I love this amp. 2 yeara ago I lucked out and found someone selling a Mark V 90 combo near me for $1000, canadian.
    Basically mint condition aside from the tubes being original and used... but still glow and respond perfectly.
    Just an absolute beast.
    Great demo by the way

  • @Skoora
    @Skoora ปีที่แล้ว +13

    You’ll get punchier tones if in full power mode, not variac mode. But I do like how variac mode sweetens the top end on my V. There’s nothing I’ve heard in the VII demo’s that sounds better than this and actually not even as good, so maybe a testament to the V and the guy playing it…lol. I won’t be letting go of mine, 12 years and counting.

  • @vaportrails7943

    I own one. The channel EQ controls basically are an overdrive/EQ pedal. Think of it that way. This is the most ridiculously versatile and tweakable amp ever made, for literally any style of music. The only question is whether anybody actually needs that many options. They seem to have dialed back the tweakability on the Mark VII in favor of cab clone, etc. On the Mark V, Extreme mode with pentode selected on the back, is insanely brutal and defined. The best high gain sound ever made. People are obsessed with the Mark IIC+, but it sounds like a practice amp compared to Extreme mode.
    As for your sounds, there are no bad sounds, just taste. It will do literally anything. The only advice is, don’t use any pedals. You do not need them.

    • @mvyper
      @mvyper ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Extreme mode with all the pre eq knobs at 3 o clock and bright switch off gives quite a recto-ish sound. Great with a boost.

    Owning this amp since 2015 and it's so much fun. I personally prefer it with EL34 (probably coming from JCM800 2203 background), there's so many different adjustment on tap, as it is well known for being versatile. I jammed with different friends from different styles and there was only good words for it. You can play pretty much all kind of music you want with this amp, including many types of metal. Go with your ears and not with knobs adjustments. You'll be satisfied.

    Your videos make a real difference to aspiring musicians, it can be _very_ difficult and intimidating to navigate the space of music gear. Its hard to find good examples of anything that doesn't come directly from the manufacturer. These are big purchases and its just not easy to do comparisons without spending a bunch of money or at least a ton of time. You've helped me make decisions when I was shopping in the past, and I have future acquisitions planned that were informed by your demos. I definitely look at this channel whenever I'm in the market for another amp #mesaboogie

      I also had the Mark V and sold it. I just couldn't find enough gain in the amp itself and for $3k I thought I ought not be dependent on a stomp box for my distortion. HOWEVER, I wonder sometimes if it's not just that I wasn't dedicated enough to dialing it in. I've thought several times about buying another if I found one cheap enough or maybe getting a JPiic when they come down in price several years from now.

      I wanted the Mark V 25 from the day it was announced. Finally bought one last year and have been largely disappointed. About a month ago, I scored an insane deal on a brand new 5150 III 6L6 50w. From the second I took it out of the box and plugged it in, it sounded incredible. On top of that, the Mesa has been sent to Mesa Boogie for warranty repair after owning it for a year. Will probably sell it when I get it back.
      I ended up also buying the EVH 2x12 cab. Didn’t care for the G12H and swapped them for some UK Mesa Vintage 30s. Absolutely killer with the 5150 III (and all of my other amps for that matter)

    @pip5528 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm more of a JP-2C guy but the V is still a cool amp and the VII isn't strictly necessary in my opinion. That being said, #mesaboogie needs to get this guy a VII to demo! Yes, I agree that the Mark series doesn't *need* an overdrive but it can be beneficial or sound good in certain situations.

    • @googuser3145
      @googuser3145 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JP2C is a beast... would be nicely updated with a cab clone IR....to make that function useful. But at $4800 retail in Canada... the Mark7 can collect dust... rediculous price...I'd rather grab a used V or a JP2C.

    • @pip5528
      @pip5528 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@googuser3145 I would also argue the JP-2C has more tone shaping options even if it technically has fewer modes. It's got 2 GEQs, pull controls for alternate gain and presence voicings (you hardly see those on modern Marks anymore, at least not since the IV), and of course I absolutely love the IIC+ circuit, so having 2 channels where you can dial that sound in to taste for rhythm and lead interchangeably is just amazing. That shred mode is also so tight and further negates the need for an overdrive. Even beyond that I just love Petrucci and DT in general.

    5:33 sounded like you were on Edge, not MK1 there. Which also makes sense because it does have that “chirpy’ quality which can tough to dial around. You’ll get it perfect for the low strings and then it will slice right through in lead notes. I found 34’s in the amp helped that and then it’s a delicate balance of the gain, treble and presence knob. I found it recorded very well if going for a JMP 2203 kind of sound. The upper end sharpness didn’t seem to translate through the mic.

    Hi Kyle and Kyle's community! Just discovered this channel and after 2 vids I subbed. I am on the search for new gear and I try to cover the sound from AC/DC to Green Day to Metallica if that makes sense. I currently run high output passive pus (which I adore) in a JVM210h (which I don't like) and 2x12" Celestion V30s. My current plan is to go for 4x12" V30s with Marhsall 1960 vintage as cabinet. I also just bought the Boss SD1 Waza because I figured almost no matter in which direction I go, it's probably useful. I started looking into Diezel VH4 but I think I don't much like the sound of it. I see myself falling in love with the JCM 800 2203 more and more and I´m wondering if that's a good choice for what I plan on doing. IF yes then the question would be whether the reissued 2203x is alright or if I should opt for a pre '85 original JCM 800 and sell my kidneys. Thank you in advance

    Continually amazed how quick you can dial an amp in, Kyle. It would take me weeks/months to suss out what you get through in 20 minutes 😅

    My friend owns one. I’ve tried so many times but I just can’t get a tone I like out of it. Its not very high gain at all.

    So not only is there 10 pounds of improperly rated for the circuit electronic components crammed into a 5 pound chassis that make these an unmitigated disaster for techs to troubleshoot or fix, but they’re apparently also a nightmare to dial in for the end user. What’s the appeal again? Toans I guess?

    just a bumpI would love hit like button but i can't do because the number of likes (666) represents very well the essence of this amp hahaha. By the way you're completely right about the sensitivity of knobs from mark V. As far as presence, gain, master and treble controls, just a little touch and you turn your tone into completely different sound

    IMHO Mark 5. I don't care for cab clone. I'll use my iso box instead. Tube rectification is the selling point for those cleans and some of the mid gains.
    Edit: hey mesa!!!! This guy wants a mark 7!!!

    I never had the chance to play one but I really dig what I've heard from your video man :) If I ever find one (or a Mark IV) at a decent price, I'll grab one.

      You won’t be disappointed if you grab one. I’ve been playing a mark iv for a long time and I’ve tried the mark v a few times. I think the mark iv sounds a bit more raw and pissed off than the v. Both sound amazing.
