I grew up in a house with very few books.
Going to the library once a week was like a foretaste of Heaven. 👼

I just started reading Georgette Heyer and I'm in love. I've read These Old Shades, Venetia and Arabella so far.
    Reading Faro's daugther next.
About fantasy: I love Howl's Moving Castle and Six of Crows.
Also love "real world with magic" books like Practical Magic. And Dance Upon Air by Nora Roberts.

Yay!! These Old Shades and Venetia are definitely in my top 5 favorite G. Heyer books I've read so far. I don't think I've read Arabella yet but it's on my TBR because I've heard it is amazing.
I LOVE Howl's Moving Castle!! I had watched the Ghibli movie several times and didn't realize it was based off of a book. Then I read the book and loved it too!
I've heard of Six of Crows and Practical Magic but not Dance Upon Air. Now I'm curious so I'll have to take a peek at the summary! 😊

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LIBRARIES!! I have enough bks. until my 400th birthday, but I still go to the library and take out bks! I can't help it, I just love the atmosphere, the smell, the ambiance, EVERYTHING about a library. Sometimes I take myself or myself and a friend on a "library field trip." Most libraries now have a "library store" where they sell their discarded bks. I have gotten some unbelievably good books for 25¢, A whole bag for $1 !! At my library the employees are very helpful and friendly. I really appreciate that so every so often I will make them cookies. They have alot of things going on also. Mostly for kids, but a monthly bookclub, and sometimes speakers for adults. I lived at the library as a child and took my own children very often. Both are avid readers also. I don't read much if any fantasy. I would like to, but the fantasy writers now are VERY DIFFERENT than many yrs. ago. I find them usually smutty, often demonic or certainly VERY dark evil. Not my kind of bk.. I read many reviews of Tress of The Emerald Sea. I decided not for me. Descriptions can be very sexy w/o explicit words and "baring all". Those authors that do that just don't have the talent/ creativity to do so. You shouldn't make apologies or be nervous about stating your reading standards. There are lots of us w/ the same. Thanks for this😊

Exactly!!! There is something so cozy and home-like about a good library. Especially the older ones that are still full of books and not computers. I've already started taking my toddler to the library and although right now he is way more interested in running up and down the aisles of books or playing with the cool toys, I am hoping it will become a really lovely nostalgic place for him too as he grows up.
Yes! I 100% agree about modern vs older fantasty! It's the biggest reason I avoid most fantasy. I don't want to read really dark books where the bad guys might actually win or the main character is in the morally grey area. Just no thank you. I'm old fashioned enough to want good morals, classic good vs. evil, and good winning out in the end.
The Lord of the Rings was probably my first real introduction to the fantasy genre so I invariably find myself measuring any fantasy book I read now against that series. Which probably isn't completely fair since J. R. R. Tolkien was such a fantastic writer. 🤭

I was also homeschooled and love the library! ❤️ Loved ACOMAF and Tress of the Emerald Sea, I really relate to Tress as a character and had an overall great time with that book! Also just recently read Half a Soul and it was super cute! I didn’t love it as much as I thought I would but still enjoyed it and thought it was very charming 😊

    • @woldenburnreads
      @woldenburnreads  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yay! How fun!! Homeschoolers are the best. 😉😁
I definitely think ACOMAF is the best in the series so far. I'm waiting for her to come out with the next book because I do want to know what happens next.
I could definitely see myself relating to Tress! She seemed like exactly the sort of heroine I would love. Maybe I'll try the book again in the autumn and see if I'm in a better mood for it. 🤭
And that describes my thoughts on Half a Soul pretty much exactly!! I liked it and enjoyed it but not quite as much as I thought I would.

I so enjoyed listening to this, Emily! I read the first Inspector Alleyn Ngaio Marsh. I was so intrigued by Alleyn, the Inspector! He’s so quirky! 😅I did like it, it dragged just a touch for me, but I’m totally trying the second. Thanks! I also DNF’d Tress…haha! It IS odd! My 14 yo really enjoyed it.

Yes! He's quite different from other detectives I've read about in mystery novels. I do feel like there were parts of different books in the series that were a bit slow. I know it took me a while to pick up the second book. But once I'd read a few of them I just couldn't stop! 😁
I could see Tress being a really good YA read! Maybe I would have liked it more if I had tried it when I was a teenager. 🤔

What a fun start to a series! I love the library too. Do you watch Chantal Reads All Day? She just did a library tag which had some fun questions. I was thinking of answering them and they might be good for your series too! 😊

I haven't heard of her! I'll definitely check out that video because a library tag sounds amazing! 😁

We're like the same person, except I'm twice your age lol. Homeschooled, large family, Heyer/Austen/Regency fan, not big on fantasy, etc. Glad i found your channel!

I’ve done better with fantasy that’s paranormal shapeshifter type that’s set in my world and adds to it. I actually find historical romance like a different world but at least the people are normal 😂

Have you read a lady’s guide to fortune hunting by Sophie Irwin? It was pretty decent and I felt for the main character and learned about position in England

I don't think I have! I know I've heard of it because I was looking to see if my library had it. 😊
