World War II is going on, and Australia is conscripting Aboriginal men into service, even though they don't have citizenship or rights in the country. Miro is one of these men, taken from his family and thrown onto the battlefield, where he risks his life at the front lines for a country that treats him as less than human and deprives him of his rights.
But when he returns back home, he discovers his land has been taken from him and his family spirited away from their home, relocated to a dangerous place where his wife and daughter are persecuted and preyed upon. Miro decides to rescue them, taking the bravery he's learned on the battlefield to mete out his own brand of justice.
Writer-director Victoria Wharfe McIntyre's epic short mixes historical drama with the Western genre, making for a supremely stylish, engaging yet eye-opening look at a forgotten chapter and perspective in history. It has a contemporary energy in its movement and stylistic bravura, but a classicism in its epic sweep and power.
The visuals have the look and feel of a feature, with sweeping camerawork and bold, vivid cinematography that evoke everything from the tension of the battlefront to the dusty isolation of the Australian desert. The film is on the longer side for a short, and the scope of the narrative is also unusually wide-ranging, spanning a diverse range of locations and time. As a result, the pacing and events move quickly, keeping the audience on its toes and constantly ratcheting up the tension.
The audience is pulled through a vast historical and cultural tableau, and while there are beautiful images to tantalize the eye and action sequences that compel attention, viewers are also asked to consider the experience of WWII from a point-of-view not often chronicled in the history books.
Though the dramatic treatment is heightened by Western flourishes, Miro's story is based on actual historical precedent and situations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples served in both world wars well before they were considered citizens of Australia, and faced enormous prejudice and discrimination despite their sacrifice and heroism -- the same situation Miro faces in the story. Miro can't get justice or respect even though he fought for a government that is mistreating his people and family. So like any Western hero, he decides to take the law into his own hands, in a spectacular ending that is both thrilling in its unfolding and stylishly bold in its execution.
Immersive and gripping, MIRO takes the traditional war hero story and gives it an Indigenous slant, and then adds a Western kick to the drama. Yet instead of making a lone outsider the engine of the story's action, it puts Miro's domestic and ancestral identity at front and center, making him emotionally relatable as a husband and father out to preserve his culture and protect his loved ones from danger.
In many ways, the epic, even glamorous quality of the filmmaking is its own form of honor and wish fulfillment, for a people who have long suffered and whose struggles have been erased from historical record. The war experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island soldiers are only just beginning to be recovered and recorded, and while MIRO isn't a documentary, it still inserts Indigenous presence in the great traditions of cinematic storytelling, with style, audacity and respect. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน

This film has the same vibe as Django Unchained. I hope to see a sequel.
Any group of people, that compels a person to commit horrible acts that that person would never think of doing otherwise is a bad group of people. Governments are responsible for the largest percentage of murders. And governments sell the idea that if they were not there, murderers would abound. The random whack job or even group of whack jobs can't even start to come close to the murder record of governments.

@Evan Koch This happens at the level of the individual and the collective. This short reminds me of the AVENGER archetype Oracle card. I always pray for healing at both levels. Lest, the shadow (violence) perpetuates. Natives, Slaves and the Colonized all suffered due to the West's arrogance. They still continue this but it's time we think of the price both the victim and the perpetrator inflicts on their future generations. Quick gains. Eternal suffering. Spiritual crisis, what else!

The Priest was my favorite character, while the Protagonist was off to War he looked after his family and tried everything In his power to protect them. And once the Protagonist came back he took up arms and helped save his family. Thats a true Bro right there.
The state doesn't like you 'taking the law into your own hands'. In reality the state would pursue the father and the priest and hang them, no matter what injustice they'd been through. Then justice would have prevailed! Now my head hurts.

The preist in real life would have been a Lutheran . There were a lot of them in the past in Australia serving little communities and there are no reported cases of child abuse as found in other denominations. During WW2 a lot of Aboriginal men served ,even one who served as fighter pilot!. If Australia hadn't recalled her troops back from Europe to defend the country from japan, (no one else could) most if not all of the aboriginals and big percentage of the rest of the population would have suffered the same fate as the Manchurian population .
If Japan had of known of the true mineral wealth of Australia,which even Australia was unaware of until the 1950's , there would have been no stopping them.

I haven't seen many films dealing with the racism faced by aborigines during those times. Very nicely done, like the tarantino style filming. Not easy to pull of in such a short format

Agreed. I kinda wish they made a full fledged movie about this. You see a lot about discrimination in American and Africa. I personally haven't seen or heard anything pertaining to Australia.
There are plenty of movies about racism towards native Australians out there, they never get the attention of the media like other films.
More should be shown on national TV, but they won't.

Look what happened in Rwanda between the Tutsis and Hutu. And who do you think captured the people who were made slaves for trade with the Americas? They weren't white. Take a look at the Kingdom of Dahomey. Africans made slaves of Africans.
These unspeakable acts left an indelible scar on the Aboriginal people and it was hardly the first.

@@aryanto0003, just saw him on a TV show on the ABC MYSTERY ROAD. Quite a few years ago here in Australia there was one called BONEY about a part aborigine detective. It was made from a series of books by Arthur Upfield. This actor would make a very good BONEY if they ever made a remake.
The actor played a constable in the TV series MYSTERY ROAD. A very good murder, mystery. TH-cam has clips from it.

Maybe once ever few thousand years but I am sure that generational memory or the conversation with another inspired that idea taking away it original status.. In other words, it's all been done. I'd be more impressed seeing a film where some refugee in Europe returns to Africa or The Middle East to face the people that murdered his family and forced them to leave their homeland. If you took the time to read up on the history from that time period of Australia you would find out that the government was rounding up aboriginal people and their children in order "to civilize" them as well as indoctrinate them into good christian people. Much like the United States and Canada did to the Native American tribes at the later part of the 19th century and early 20th century. All done under the laws of those countries sponsored by land grabbing land barons and money hungry christian missionaries. Same story holds true for the Hawaiian Islands as well. So take some time and read a little deeper into the history of Australia, the United States, and Canada. They are a small example of how the European Coloinization laws affected aboriginal tribes over the centuries. Plus before I forget the same narrative applies to the Spanish Empire in its conquest of South America and Central America with the same level of prejudicial laws that enslaved the indigenous aboriginal populations. One can learn a lot from reading history.

If you read history, real history and not how they teach it in school, you would find that truth in the words of the bible Ecc 8; 9 "All of this I have seen, and I applied my heart to every work done under the sun, during the time that man has dominated man to his [injury]". We, the human race have been really terrible to each other, nobody can take moral high ground in history. History is just the story of every man's injustice against whomever they were dominating at the time. It's still the same right now. Awaiting the Kingdom of God.....actual justice then prevail.

Absolutely brilliant. You dontget too see too much how horribly the people of autralia were treated.. aboriginal people no different than you or me.we see a lot of racism this time period but not shown from this perspective. I absolutely loved this. It was so well done.

SUPERB. Excellent acting across the board (the Mother's screams were heart wrenching in their realism, you couldn't help but feel her loss). Good cinematography, good story (as well as history lesson), overall a resounding success as an enthralling, well crafted short. Kudos, VERY well done.

Even the soldiers were so confused - in war they throw out all negative thoughts of the people they fight alongside and when they return home with friends to minorities they were shocked at how they were treated.
Imagine being disrespected in your own country for your biological structure imbedded within your DNA that's been here before humans and possibly Earth itself.

I don't usually comment on videos, but this film was one of the best I've seen in a long time. You can tell that they spent a lot of time making it right up until the end where you see a poorly done chroma key with stock fire as the background. I understand that physical pyrotechnics is expensive and all but that really broke the immersion in the best part of the film for me. Overall it's a really, really good film.

Honestly, this is an astounding short film. Despite the budget being a flaw in some areas, it still holds value in the story, especially in a historical setting untouched by most (American) educational systems.

The shootout is the most classic American depiction of Australia I've ever seen.

This was beautiful and brilliant! The cinematography and chorography for the action scenes was nothing short of excellent! This is one of my favorite short films on this channel! Bravo! Mark Coles Smith is a phenomenal actor and deserves to be in more films!
Try and see him on MYSTERY ROAD where he plays a Constable in the outback. It was a six episode TV show. A murder mystery worth watching.
Can't wait for the sequel on this one. Great work!

Short films of such calibre are the most effective ways by which unreported history or 'purposely' twisted and omitted narratives of the past can be put 'in action' to get the full picture and hit the message home.
Miro has all the ingredients of a powerful film compacted for maximum effect. It made me feel angry on a number of levels.

Finally a good film with less talking
This was not dialogue heavey like Tarantino's movies, it has more to do with John Ford's 'The Searchers', Right down to the doorway scene (one of my favourites). The director knows he's craft and this too, is an excellent piece of film making, highlighting a piece of history, that many wish had not occured. 10/10

This video is a great example of how special Omeleto is, the gun shot to the head , and the view after "You shouldn't be here " , the lighter that was shown and than used at the end. Small point of logic.....after rescuing the daughter they need to get away. Smoke from a burning building can be seen from a long ways off and will attract others to come see what is going on. Does it make sense to burn the place?
Conscript a man, teach him how be an efficient killer, then give him lots of reasons to kill you--probably not the smartest thing to do...

This film is so relevant right now!!! So powerful and I like the uncomfortable truth!!!! The fact that they didn't consider them citizens, yet sent them to fight the war and even after this sacrifice took their home away and separated their families. Just like in USA and just like in Canada with thousands of kids just starved or driven to death in Catholic schools...
