In the autumn of last year, I decided to do a rewatch of the Doctor Who television series (all of them).
Part way through, I happened upon a very funny quotation attributed to a Diamanda Hagan, in some TH-cam thread or other.
I thus discovered this channel - and the excellent Quick Guide to Classic Who, with its optimal balance of information, affection and irreverence.
And now there’s this - which I have already found most informative.
I’ve long been an ardent enthusiast of televised Doctor Who, but only recently became aware that it had also such a huge resource of audio drama - a catalogue so bewilderingly vast that I had no idea that I had myself - accidentally - become recently involved in it.
A discerning guide like yourself will no doubt prove invaluable in charting some sort of path through the labyrinth.
In fact, so impressed was I by the Classic Guide that I actually wrote down a list of phrases that had amused me. Here’s a handful of them. They are in no particular order, and they may be difficult to fathom out of context, but what is important is to spread confusion, not eliminate it:
‘A race of man-hating, genocidal, possibly Lesbian
    go-go dancers.’
‘Unlike most musicals, this one has only one song’
‘If I showed you any more, the actor might chew through your walls, right through the screen, even though he’s long dead’
‘And the companion is back to being stupid’
‘No one can out-act this man when there’s foam involved’
‘Leela: the only companion more likely to stab you than Jamie’
    ‘Battled hardened disco-robots’
‘Half of ABBA, crossed with a Christmas cracker’
    ‘Meringue-faced future Doctor’
    ‘Vanilla made flesh’
‘Tom Baker looks like he’s fighting the urge to slit his wrists’
‘And that’s only in part because of Jo’s jacket’
    ‘This is a must-see … but it’s also f***ing terrible’
Magnificent work - a great way to introduce DW to the uninitiated - and hugely entertaining to the … initiated.
Oh Ry In Eye Key Ooh Ley!
    😁

      450, eh?
So I’ll be travelling with Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling; and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band will have just come out. Excellent!
Well, Diamanda - I may call you Diamanda, mayn’t I? You don’t mind, do you? I didn’t think you would - yes, your videos have been a source of great enjoyment.
And in the area of ‘my’ Doctor Who (i.e. Letts/Hinchcliffe), I found myself almost invariably agreeing with you. Which is nice.
Other things that spring to mind are:
      1. Your touching encounter with Bernard Horsfall - who I once did a radio play with. He clearly had a well-rehearsed Deadly Assassin response prepared, but tended to get a bit John Merrick (‘Everybody’s been very kind!’) if you asked him about anything else.
I wanted to talk about one of the most disturbing scenes of the 1970s - when he grabbed a standing metal ashtray and smashed up his television in the opening episode of The Changes.
‘Oh, yes… I think we didn’t film that in… no, we were in, er, Birmingham, was it?’
      ‘Bristol.’
‘Bristol. Ha. Yes… Bristol. Good heavens…’
      Lovely chap. And so tall!
The most enthusiastic DW supporting actor I ever worked with was Philip Madoc, who seemed to remember EVERYTHING about The Brain of Morbius - and The War Games - and even the bloody Krotons!
I don’t think I asked him about The Power of Kroll - can’t think why…
      2. Reminded of the prevalent myth (circa the year before you were born!) that the UK didn’t know the Cybermen were going to be in Earthshock.
I can’t speak for the entire nation, but on Merseyside, the Radio Times (with the listings for the next week obv) was delivered every Monday.
Thus, on THAT (episode 1) Monday, we had the following week’s edition with the ‘Cybermen Are Back’ article in it - so the Doctor Who fans at my school (all two of us!) were ecstatic all day.
I LOVE spoilers - so it was ‘excellent!’ And thankfully - for once! - the unsurprise was worth waiting for!
      3. Also - your Nigel Kneale (without whom etc) video is excellent too.
I would say to anyone - if they haven’t time to watch the actual stuff - they should watch your videos!
      👍😁

    • @DiamandaHagan

@@stephennoonan8417 Oh Bernard Horsefall, he was so nice. I watched The Changes recently and didn't even notice it was him in it, I think I was too amused by it basically being a kids version of The Walking Dead (all the post-apocalyptic danger and survival). I'm thinking I might do a video on it because in a very weird way it kinda works for a gonzo metaphor for modern Britain.
I think my fave Doctor Who spoilers are the stories that have shock reveals of secret villains whose name was in the title but that's just me :)
Thanks for the kind words about the Kneale video, he was so talented (have you heard Tom Baker reading his story about the frog taxidermist??)

You HAVE to do a vid on The Changes; I’ll be inconsolably disappointed if you don’t.
It went out on Mondays, concurrent with Ark in Space, Sontaran Experiment and Genesis of the Daleks - in the days when children’s television was made by slightly sadistic nut jobs.
It’s also part of that strand of ecological doom-mongering (a fresher narrative idea then) that gave us The Green Death in Doctor Who and Penda’s Fen in Play for Today.
That’d be a good one to review. No reductive finger-wagging there, but a surreal phantasmagoria of sinister industrial experiment, awakening teenage sexuality, folk-horror … and Elgar. Quintessential 70s bonkersness.
Tom Baker used to say, ‘If you underestand the play it’s no good’ - which possibly makes Penda’s Fen a masterpiece. Chris (Kinda) Bailey used to say, ‘The explanation’s always thinner than the thing’ - which always put me in mind of The Changes, where the singing pylons, demented Luddites and peripatetic Sikhs were a bit let down by the dénouement explanation of an environmentally friendly rock that talks Latin.
The last really good eco drama on British telly was probably Edge of Darkness in 1985 …
Yes, titular spoilers of cliffhangers. Mostly Dalek stories spring to mind, but the prize probably goes to Pertwee’s inexplicable surprise at discovering a Dalek when he’d arrived on the planet (of them) after recently escaping from them and hanging out with a bunch of Thals for the whole episode.
The only surprise returns that really were a surprise were the Sontarans at the end of episode 4 of Invasion of Time…
And there was the reveal of the Master in episode 3 of Keeoer of Traken - which really worked in 1981.
Anything to do with Nigel Kneale or Tom Baker reading interests me - so the combination of both is extremely appealing. I’ve heard one about a kid’s photograph, but not a frog taxidermist… an omission I hope to rectify.

You mimicked my own thinking there on Colin Baker. Much improved, there. Easily my favourite Big Finish Doctor. They wrote him far, far more competently than the television show did... though that is not exactly the highest bar.
Incidentally, I work as a call centre manager for a market research company, and one day while floor walking I heard an interviewer say the name 'Colin Baker'. Respondents for that project were supposed to be on the wealthier side, so I thought 'nah can't be'.
I went to the desk, listened in for a second, just long enough to hear him speak. Within two syllables I knew it was him.
Interviewer wasn't handling the call well either, so I very probably almost got escalated to Colin on the phones. Can you imagine how awkward that would have been? :)

Rory stories are REALLY good. LIke no, they are some of the best, most heartwarming stories big finish produces because Rory is that perfect a protagonist. In the second boxset he becomes best friends with Lancelot who is 100% in love with Rory and their friendship (Rory sadly doesn't reciprocate) is amazing. I actually teared up at the end of Camelot boxset.

Davison even acknowledged in one of the inteviews that he was horribly miscast when he played the Doctor on TV and had no idea what the Hell he was doing with the character but returning to it now he's actually old and mature enough to play the character properly he's a lot mor comfortable with the mantle.

I hate to sound harsh but I do not gravitate towards Stephen Noonan's First Doctor, I much prefer David Bradley, yes he sounds nothing like Hartnell but he does perfectly capture the spirit of the First Doctor through his own performance
When it comes to these recastings you either need someone who's spot on with their impression like Jacob Dudman, Frazer Hines or Tim Trealor, or someone who may not sound like the Doctor but captures their spirit like Bradley or Michael Troughton. Stephen Noonan sounds more focused on trying to be an exact impersonation of Hartnell rather than give his own performance as the character as his impersonation doesn't work
    At least for me anyway

My dear Daniel, there are far harsher sounding things you could have said than that; and I like the word ‘gravitate’ in any context.
What Stephen is doing with the performance is certainly not to everyone’s taste; and - as a fan who has previously experienced severe disappointment himself with aspects of the programme - he is extremely sympathetic to their reservations.
He always tries to read every comment made about it - partly from an insistence on hearing bad news immediately, but also out of a belief in ‘the power of facing’,or in the hope of learning from ‘just criticism’.
Very best wishes to you though, Daniel. And I’ll seriously consider what you have said.

      Oh, that’s all right, Daniel.
It’s a curious thing to survey the range of responses the work has received - from deeply unimpressed like yourself to the positively adulatory.
I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
      I do enjoy it, yes.
And it may be irrational of me, but it might surprise you to learn that I (almost) enjoy the negativity as much as the positivity - because any sort of uniformity is just, well, paralysingly dull, boring and tedious.
I suppose the ideal is to hear somebody I respect say, ‘Not bad at all.’
What I would encourage - and no doubt the likes of Briggs and Haigh-Ellerry would approve of this economically 😉 - is that auditors listen to a whole story rather than just clips or trailers before they make a judgment.
I’m sure you have, Daniel - and, as I say, I’m sorry it’s not to your taste.
      But I appreciate your perspective.
      Very best wishes,
      Stephen.
      😁

Dreyfus was never The Master he was just A Master, and frankly the only reason his Master even existed is cos Big Finish hadn't yet decided to use Jon Culshaw as the Delgado incarnation, in short I found his Master boring and I won't miss him

It’s even worse when Masterful gave the Master’s first incarnation a way more interesting characterisation than the Destination Wars did. I wish we got that squeamish version of the Master who constantly kept trying to moralise his actions from the get go.

I think its because hes doing his own take on it. I can kind of understand that. Its his dad he's being asked to imitate. I wouldn't want to do an impression of my dad.
