- Reviewing the Nokia G22, a budget Android smartphone built to last - with the ability to fix its screen, battery and other bits with simple tools and a guide. This full Nokia G22 tour runs through the specs and features, tests the camera tech - and Chris even shows how to replace the battery, without maiming himself.
Here in the UK, this phone will cost £149 and release on March 8. You can order replacement parts from IFixit, such as a screen (£45) or battery (£23).
The Nokia G22 serves up some decent specs for that budget price, including a 50MP camera that's fine in good light, although does struggle otherwise. You have a 6.5-inch HD IPS screen protected by Gorilla Glass 3, plus IP52 splash resistance.
However, although you get excellent battery life, the Nokia G22 does have limited performance thanks to the basic Unisoc chipset. It's also old Android 12, with a couple of OS upgrades - here's hoping Android 13 arrives soon.
So are you tempted by the Nokia G22? The QuickFix design, extended three year warranty and low price are certainly enticing if you want something to hold onto for a while. As long as the performance doesn't suffer more over time, that is.

I'm impressed that the screen can be removed and clicked back in instead of the glue and heat gun normally needed to remove screens. Honestly all phones should be like this.
While a part of me also wants that but the point is this kind of design makes the phn very vulnerable to dust and water. I think in the last 10 yrs almost everyones phn has suffered from water damage . The ip 52 rating on this phn proves it. Non removable battery and glued screen helps the new phn to achieve a minimum ip55 rating . Plus look at the thickness of the phn another disadvantage of this kind of design. Now if their r&d team can figure out a way to make it ip55 then it would be a big win.

The phone have some lifetime is important to repair it to last longer not to robust it for limmited of time
Just needs the top tier line with hardware upgrades. Same design of DIY
Some companies sell screens already glued to frames though. This is about as easy

I love seeing Nokia still being somewhat present in the current smartphone market, but I'd like to see them produce a proper flagship again!
They should ditch their superiority complex and launch a good full fledged budget flagship/mid range phone to get back
Although HMD is located quite literally across the street from Nokia, I believe they're fully independent company. They recently admitted they're not focusing on high end ... A lot like Joe Belfiore was forced to admit in 2017 that Microsoft wasn't "focusing" on Windows Mobile.
Nokia is bought by some company and yet they were not able to do anything yet!

It may be a lower end device, but fair play to Nokia for pushing this sort of thing. Hope they lean into it and make it standard across their phones, it's certainly something I'd look into when I'm ready for a new blower.

Ah yes, Lumia, back when a single piece polycarbonate body in a bright colour was an eye-catching premium feature, instead of the sign of a cheap budget phone. How times have changed. That being said, Lumia is about a decade past Nokia's reputation for build quality, which goes back to at least the legendary 3310. The phones of that era were extremely durable because the battery was removable, and the outer shell consisted of 2 removable plastic covers, and the front cover even came with a plastic cover for the screen. This made it so that it was virtually impossible to break the screen from a fall, and when the device did fall, at worst it would just dismantle into 4 pieces that you usually could put together right away. And when you couldn't, you could just buy a set of new covers and a new battery for very little money.

I have just heard about this phone, and according to Nokia's website repairability eill be a main objective designing their future phones. I cannot express how much I appreciate that, as repairing and changing battery in my phones has always been a priority for me. I will keep a close eye on this brand from now on, as even though this phone is just too weak for me needs specs wise (mainly the soc and amount of ram), but a higer spec phone with the same design philosophy could very well be my next phone (and would also buy that for my parents).

I have the Samsung Note 8. Most of the features go unused. I really just need a phone for the basic things: phone calls, texts, Google Maps, and news. Nothing outrageous. Hell, I have a DSLR I'd MUCH rather use for photos. My Note 8 has some serious burn-in, so I've been considering a new phone. A phone that is outright marketed as a fixable phone sounds damn good right about now.

@@TechSpurt simpleish screen replacement at home on a mid ranger and I'd buy one quicker than Lewis Hamilton in a new Merc, because I seem to break em faster than a chef making omelettes breaks eggs.

Remember once when Nokia battery removal was just subject to removing the rear panel, i just wish nokia come back with good hardware and software, i was honestly waiting for the connecting people logo on start up of the phone, when he replaced the battery.

It's the repairability that attracts me. I've replaced batteries in older iPhones (iPhone 4 and 6) successfully but it is a bit of a fiddle for my very old eyes and hands even though I've been fixing things for well over 60 years! It's good to know it does come apart sensibly.
Not too bothered about bells and whistles. I use a desk top PC for anything serious; my phone is just a fallback thing for (surprise!) making and receiving phone calls. The only games I play are Codeword and Freecell - anything needing fast video is down to the desktop I know I can fix.

Taking the battery out was more complicated than I expected :D I hope that they do a similar thing with a phone with a faster processor.

I have got one and I am happy with it. I don't need the all the bells and whistles just a phone that does what a phone should do. I have enough computers to do all the rest that smart phones try to do and if I want a top notch camera I will buy a real camera.

Figures one of the only modern smartphones with a removable battery and one of the only phones the manufacturer actually encourages the consumer to fix themselves , ends up having the sort of specs that you wouldn't want really want to use now , let alone the future ... lol. ... bump up the spec just a little and then it actually becomes worth maintaining for years.

As a person who has fixed phones for some 8 years: This is about as repairable as a 2017 xiaomi or any other modern sub-£200 phone for that matter. While cool and all, this phone doesn't really live up to the hype of being super repairable.
Guardian (brief) review today has it UK priced at £149.99, shipping from March 8. Replacement parts look reasonable/ ish... battery £22.99, £44.99 screen.👍
Still a far cry from the days of being able to switch out a Nokia phone battery in under a minute, but at least they're trying, bless 'em.

I've had it for around 3 months now, you can get it for as low as £110 brand new and I can say it's amazing I haven't really tested it for demanding games though but regardless I recommend especially for it's repairability its very reassuring. Hopefully we get high quality OS upgrades before it stops receiving support for it . 100% worth it

This is my next phone for sure. I've been eyeing the Fairphone for years but I use the camera quite a lot and just can't justify the cost considering the lackluster camera onthe FP. This one is dirt cheap and looks like it has a perfectly decent camera.

I really hope and wish all Nokia phones in G and X series from now on will have this brilliant new fix the phone yourself at home with amazingly cheap prizes compared to what repair shops are asking at least here in Finland. Nokia G22 new screen only costs 49,95 € and a new battery is 24,95 € and a new charging port is 19,95 €.

Would be great if this uses some newer mix of hardware rather than literal G21 but I like the non-adhesive screen approach. Make things easier than glued one since if parts of the glue haven't melted yet, you can snap the screen in half (rookie mistake). The compromise is waterproof but I'd rather have repairables than throwables

I'd prefer repairables as well. Not many of us go diving with our phones.
I have G2 and it was basic but worked well apart from the camera that I found produced poor quality.
The self repair feature is a good idea, but I think that they should have pushed it with a higher end device. Can't see many people willing to repair a basic phone.
Great review as usual. I don't know if the sound from the mono speaker of the Nokia was any good because the sound from my phone's mono speaker is bloody terrible. Hard to tell.

I remember how easy it was to disassemble a nokia n9 or a nokia lumia 900 even though they were "unibody" phones. Truly a marvel of design.

Nokia should match the durability of their hardware with longer support.

Honestly gents I know collectively we lament Nokia and specs but the Nokia G50 still gets 12h + screen on time daily with Bluetooth on so I'm curious if this one would do decently too

If was design for longevity then they should put a useful SoC on it. Unisoc is privacy backdoor asking for troubles junk.
I prefered their circular camera modules, but this doesn't look too bad either!

I love the idea of easy repairability but I wish the specs were a little higher. I use my phone a lot outdoors and so have come to appreciate an OLED and a good camera.

That sounds like a smartphone I'd like. I am hesitant to buy flagships when either the apps won't run on them, and it will be next to impossible to get replacement screens and batteries. Post data: "nipple notch" x,D
Fairphone has been offering the DIY repair side for years (hence Nokia trying to push in on that market niche) but Fairphone has made it super easy to swap battery without any screws, literally done in seconds. Oh and also the Fairphone 3+ and up can all shoot 4K video...

Problem is this phone looks basically unusable straight out the box with those awful specs. Doesn't really make sense to see this phone as a long term device where you just repair it as you go because it's already on a life-support machine.

HMD is surviving, they said they won't focus on a flagship, maybe they'll launch a premium intermediate later this year, I hope they improve their logistics. I have the Nokia 8.3 and I really like the device.

You know, I opted for a OnePlus Nord N10 as my current phone a few years ago, due to Nokia jumping on the Google Assistant button train. I am old enough to remember when phones had all kinds of useless buttons on them like that, so that was an immediate nope to me. It's great to see that this trend has (seemingly) died now.
That being said, I'm not entirely sold on the repairability angle here. Firstly, I remember the old days when swapping a battery took about 30 seconds, because the batteries were actually designed to be removable. That's what I was expecting when I heard that you can swap the battery. Not a 20 minute affair involving over 10 screws and speciality tools. At the same time, it doesn't look like a very difficult process. However, there is another problem: The G22 is a budget device. We all know the big money is in selling flagship devices, and those would also be the ones that people would be most likely to want to repair, instead of buying a new one outright.

It's quite surprising that nokia made this phone an easy repair one.
If nokia is not gonna change the design of the phone for the next generation, maybe nokia can just sell the motherboard with upgraded specs.
If nokia is really true to their eco friendly-ish idea, I hope nokia will consider this idea as an option. They don't have to make the entire phone, just some parts for DIY, repair, and upgrade.

Sooooooo ... it is not a bad effort but I ask if the selling point is the strong battery or the Lego science project thingy which will be an open invitation to every phone snatcher to get spares they can easily sell in case many people buy this phone and what's with the nipple notch? Okay. I do like nipples , I just don't like them on flat surfaces and I prefer them without cameras, is there the option to swap out the screen completely?
