      imagine all bigger cities are in this condition in Italy, and even worse depending on the period of the year. I live in Bologna and I can definitely relate. Florence is worse, Napoli is getting worse, Venice is almost literally sinking under the weight of tourism. Can we please live and work in our own cities? They're not amusement parks, and we locals are not amused. And no, this kind of tourism isn't doing any good, damage is way bigger than profit, especially for cities relying on industries & manufactures and universities (as Bologna, or Milan for example). It's really overwhelming 😶

    The crowds are because nearly everyone, sadly, goes to exactly the same places. Rome can accommodate more than a few thousand tourists, obviously, but not if they all stand at Trevi for half a day. If it doesn't stop, literally everything will soon require payment of an admission fee.

    I am a Roman citizen and world traveler, I am 55 years old. Every now and then I walk around the city and as usual I saw (especially in the area around St. Peter's Basilica) numerous unauthorized tour guides harassing tourists. They are easily recognisable, they have a fake authorization or faded identification card around their neck, they come from countries like India and Bangla Desh or from North Africa or Latin America but there are also some Italians, they offer tourist services. If I were a foreign tourist I would avoid listening to them. Plan your trip in advance and you will not need any unauthorized guide. If you need a tourist guide or generic tourist services, rely on official channels or someone who has at least an office and an address.

    • @Sashazur
      @Sashazur 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Some years ago in Rome my partner got called out by the “tour guide police” (not sure who they really are) for telling me and a couple of friends about a statue we were looking at in a church, there was actually a sign there saying it was forbidden to talk to more than two people about the statue! You would think they could enforce rules about obviously fake guides rather than harassing tourists.

    that is exactely what Barcelona looks like ( I would say Barcelona is even much more crowded than this) and why people are complaining about tourism and mass immigration there... nothing feels local anymore... locals are even hard to spot nowadays as the majority are just foreigners. At least Rome has their culture left intact.. in Barcelona you don't even know what is from there, what is south american, what is southern spanish, what is actually catalan? mass tourism and immigration is destroying cities and their culture, it's becoming a big amusement parc

    I went to rome a few years ago in November. It was also very crowded. I really loved the antique buildings, but the rest of the city was really dirty, the streets in bad condition and besides the crowds I really got annoyed by the sheer mass of rose sellers, burglars and other scammers. I think I will never visit it again. :(
