I make it a habit of always yanking out those stupid staples before starting any project with fence pickets. I appreciate your level of detail in this video. Thanks for sharing this with us.
For the top rim ....make the long piece first...and then put the side rim after...this will look much better....You can also make 45 degree corners ...glue them well.....and staples them underneath this way...the corner will stay in place...and you should add some quality deck screws......They will hold much better.....because just brad nails and glue with humidity....they will be crap in 2 years...!!
Love your video, but please wear safety glasses. It only took me one time using my nailer when I was trimming out a basement where it hit a knot and came back and hit me in my safety glasses. I was 50-50 in wearing safety glasses from that day on. It’s 100%.
I don't get why everyone needs plans etc. Watch the vid. Write down what you need. Cut it up and go to school on the first one or two, then you're a pro...done. Thanks Salty. Nice stuff!
Make a bench for your saw with a backstop. Make a quick jig that will clamp to backstop. Cut one and set the clamp for length. Boom even faster. Nice vids!
When doing repetitive cuts, always use the first board as the pattern, otherwise you will get a progressive error introduced into each successive piece
This was a pretty exciting build I was hoping to tackle, but then I remembered I live in Canada and everything here is 2.5x the cost of the US. Just to buy the pickets is over $110 CAD lol.
I work a lumber mill/yard. The big box stores aren't the ones that staple that stuff on the ends. That would be us. Some of us are a bit more modern and it is printed on instead.
Thank you very much for the video and taking the time to show what you do and making the cut list as well. Always wanted to try basic woodworking and your small planters are the first ones I did. Is there anything you can do if you encounter cupped or bent cedar planks? most of the big box stores around here, always seem to have boards that are not straight or flat. Thanks again.
Nice design. Your instructions are very clear. I might just make one👍 One thing that’s always puzzled me about planters is whether or not to line the box with plastic or seal the wood to protect the wood from rot and to prevent spill from leaking out the cracks. Let me know what you think.
Thank you! I don't line them with anything since cedar is naturally rot resistant. Of course, it would make them last longer if you were to use some sort of fabric or sealer, but it isn't needed unless you want to. The only issue with not sealing them, is cedar will grey over time being out in the sun.
Nice looking and well made planter you have there. How often do you sell planters? Is it a year round thing or mostly end of Spring early summer? Thank you.
Nice and clear instructions and well explained. Im in England and have made quite a lot of planters similar to these but i make my legs up then screw the boards to them but your way is as good ! Ive just had 2 planters picked up this morning which i sold for £45 each and i dont know how many dollars that is but i have a feeling its too cheap and that includes finishing and lining !
For the rail that holds the bottom, I used to make that using off cuts so sometimes I would use 3 different strips butted together to make one rail, it gets glued and nailed to the full board so the theory is that the lengthwise strength wouldn't be an issue. The idea was to save full length long strips for parts in the build where you have to use a full nice strip. Eventually I stopped doing that just because it took more steps to keep finding offcuts that would work and cutting them to length, faster to just cut one or more boards to 44 inches or whatever you need. What do you think about using like 3 offcut strips to make that floor rail?
That’s what I do 90% of the time. I have a pretty big stockpile of scraps, so I just go through them and use it. You’re right on what you said, it doesn’t affect the strength at all.
ever have an issue with the boards contracting over time and leaving gaps? My instinct would be to cut shiplap and overlap them, but obviously more work...
Beginner here, but, isn’t it necessary to add some coating to the wood if it’s going to be on the outside, rain, sun, etc, and if it’s going to be in contact with plant soil would the wood develop mold?
@@UlisesBarrera with cedar it’s not necessary needed. Cedar is naturally rot resistant. The only down side, is it will grey over time in the sun. I always let the customer add a sealer if they wanted to. You just have to have to be careful if you are going to plant vegetables, the sealer can leach into the soil.
Where do you find these cedar fence pickets for 3or4 dollars? They are like none of my area. One place wants $13 for number one and seven dollars for number two Cedar Home Depot and Lowe’s in my area don’t carry them.
Ya, I was thinking the same thing. Here in Alberta a 5' cedar board is $7.04 and 8' is $11.19 on sale. Normal lumber might be cheap. But they are gouging on everything else👎
And I have seen a lot of injuries from those staples. So yes, wear your darned eye protection folks. Imagine the nail gun and table saw injuries I've seen.
I do not, I let the customer add finish if they want to. Finish will definitely help the life span of the planter but it's not 100% needed. The only down side is the cedar will grey over time out in the sun.
Just depends on what you’re planting. For example, tomatoes you want 12”. This box is roughly 15” deep, but you don’t fill it up to the very top anyway. Just has some extra breathing room.
How did you go about getting started to sell and market these? I have all the necessary tools and the knowledge. Just wondering what you think would be the best first steps to make this a side hustle?
All right thank you. I am going in the morning to buy some fence pickets I'm going to give it a shot. Do you have any thoughts on the timing, like when is a good time of year to market these? Because my thoughts are it's kind of late in the season
@@damianmccracken7003 it’s definitely late in the season now. People will still want them, but a month before spring is when the orders start getting crazy
These look great. I can't believe you can get these so cheap. Where I am cedar 1x6x6 is $10 CAD at home depot, so 12 would cost $120. To make 70% over material cost I'd need to sell them for $400 CAD, or about $295 USD! 😔
The material he's using are fence pickets which sell for about 4$ at home depot. And are 6' x5 1/2" wide. 1x material us way more expensive if you can even find it at the big box stores.

Like the last guy said, these are fence pickets. Most likely they are the green pressure treated pickets at Home Depot. You can make this very cheap. You might want to stain it to change the color. I just purchased enough of these last week to build a large trashcan screen to hide my trash cans. They were 3.50$ a piece.
Hard to tell on video but those pickets look thicker than what I get. Mine come barely 5/8 and sometimes a hair under. I sold my planer a few years ago in disgust over snipe and use a router with sled but would not dare plane mine if I had one.
@@SaltyWoodworking Wow nice. I had 3 different planers including a $900 Dewalt, all lunchbox planers. I spent hours adjusting the tables and building sleds, could never get rid of the snipe. I built mostly cutting boards so I had to use a couple extra long pieces to take the snipe. Then I just started making them 4-6 feet long and using a router to plane then cut them down to size which was much nicer because I could make them wider than 12". Anyway, I guess snipe would not be an issue with pickets because you're going to cut the ends off anyway.
