I run the marketing department of a software startup as my day job. I’ve always messed around with woodworking and wanted to take it a bit more seriously and maybe write off some tools and my shop. I decided to give the planter thing a shot, with my own USP and marketing flair. “Product market fit” is an understatement here. I did $5700 in sales my first week. Been waking up at 5AM and going to bed at 11PM to keep up with orders and my day job. Re-arranging my shop and likely hiring some help. You’re providing people with some life changing stuff my guy! If you ever want a guest to talk shop on marketing I’d be happy to join.
Thanks for the kind words buddy. WOW YOURE KILLIN IT! These cedar boards sure have changed my life financially, so I'm more than happy to share it with others to make the world a little brighter. :)

Just sold a 3 picket planter and a long planter this weekend (first builds) for $120. I also sold a few other pieces (from another channel) for a total of $180 for the price of 14 pickets, nails and glue. Now my wife wants the hanging post planter ASAP. I did however miss the outside side brace on the long planter. Thanks for the plans and God Bless!
The video next week covers the outside brace on the long box; it was a mistake when I built the first couple boxes this year lol so i just did it to all of them
I was about to comment the same, I really like him, sounds like a great guy, this is only the second video I've seen of his, I just found him the other day, I liked the way he asked for the subscribe button and the like button so I did both and now this video came up and wow it's super helpful plus I want to try to find that little chair he has for $60, I'm hoping I can find a video where he makes that one, it's tough without a table saw. 🙂
Not a bad plan honestly. Its another reason I make the boxes in advance so the glue has a week or more to set up before they pile 3-4 of them into their car :P

I just happened to use one of those exact same pump sprayers last nite for something and it worked just fine. If it isn't misting adjust it or, there's something obstructing the nozzle. Check it first with water first before using any chemicals. Love this dude. Thanks bro. Excellent video. Keep up the good work.
Those pump sprayers have an adjustable nozzle to control the spray from stream to mist. The bakery close to me uses those for misting and proofing bread 🍞.

Hey Aaron thanks for your videos! I'm a beginner woodworker myself and sold some planters throughout last year and this year, haven't done any of your designs yet but I'll be trying the 7-picket long planter soon, your picket pricing sounds crazy up north, I'm in Texas and the most I pay for Cedar pickets is usually $2.35 per 6ft cedar picket
Do you run one side of your boards through a planer to get that clean look on the outside? All cedar pickets in my area have the fuzzies on all faces. Thanks for everything.
Another great video Aaron! You’re a rockstar for sharing your free plans and tips and tricks with us!! Sp appreciated! I may need to consider cleaning out a storage space by next spring in my 12’x16’ shed for purchasing a full pallet of pickets. Talk to me about your thoughts on the Brad nails vs 1” exterior screws, simply time difference it would take to use the screws?
Brad nailer and glue is a lot quicker, and cheaper. Exterior screws are more noticeable and my OCD would make me measure out each one so they were equally spaced/centered. But it's an option :)
Dude. This is awesome. I’ve made a couple of your sets and created some plans in AutoCAD with the “Voss method”. Works great to maximize the lumber usage! 🤘🏼 thanks so much! Wanna buy some planters?!? 😂

Nope, i leave them as they are. I also have a video about stain, seal and paint these, along with other answers, its in the Free Picket Planter playlist :)
This was some great information, thanks alot, much appreciated. The picket fences I buy from my hardware store are pine, what would you suggest finishing it with if i don't want it natural?
I gave it a try, I sprayed each of the 3 picket boxes just fine, but had to let it catch up for the long box. Mines a battery powered pancake though 🤷♀️
Thanks for the planter plans. Made a killing this spring so far! I have had a couple of customers who have asked me for kits. Do you have plans for making kits? If so can you make a video for that?
Hey John! I'm a middle school teacher and starting an urban gardening project to improve food security in our school neighborhood by hopefully building some planters that will be planted by my students and adopted by businesses in our community to make free produce available to anyone who is hungry. Wondering if you'd have special pricing if we bought several, and if your planters could be sold as kits that we could put together ourselves. This was the request I got.
Great stuff Aaron, new subscriber here. Question, what percentage of material cost do you add on top for your selling price? Before any finish is put on of course.
I sell projects for material times 2x - 3x depending on how long it takes to complete. However, my planter boxes have fixed pricing since they don't cost that much to build
I brought in a sample to work and sold quite a few plus got custom orders. No one seemed aware there were tons available on marketplace so I managed to cut that out.
Thompsons water seal is likely not something you want leaching out of the wood into whatever plants are growing, especially not if people are growing veggies. Linseed Oil does a great job and is 100% food safe.
Thanks for all the tips. I did notice that you dropped the price from your build video of the bench planter from $80 to $60. It this because it wasn’t selling at that price or another reason. Love your work! Curious though, is there a difference between cedar and incense cedar? Menards doesn’t specify but Lowe’s does. I wasn’t sure if there was a difference or which you used.
Great video and entertaining. I just started watching your channel and I am a new subscriber. I just started selling on FB market place and was wondering when you make a sale locally do you give out your home address or do you make deliveries? Thank you and keep up the great job.
I give them my home address and I have a payment window where they drop in the cash and take their boxes, sounds shady but I don't know any criminals who plant flowers :P Ive only me two of the 40+ orders pucked up so far this year. Plus this way I dont have to try and schedule a time to meet and blah blah blah
How much time does it take you to build like a 16x16 planter box? I charge $40 for mine in Tennessee. But my wood store is 30 minutes, and so I would spend about 2 hours just getting wood.
My wood is also 30 minutes away. My kia holds 30 pickets and thats what I bring home lol. It only takes about 20 minutes to bang one of these out once you've built a few of them :)
Have you thought about just buying the spray can of Thompson water seal it’s $6-$7 it would probably be cheaper than just buying a sprayer at harbor freight and tossing it because of cleaning BELIEVE ME I hate cleaning a sprayer too it’s a pure dred when I have to clean mine but I believe you’d make out better with the spray can and maybe try the commercial spray bottles that Lowe’s sells with the blue and yellow lids they have a great mist to them and can be adjusted just a thought maybe it’ll help you save some $$$ thanks for the video and your time best of luck to you buddy
Might try it on a different device, plans download on all three of my devices, not sure if its a browser setting or why it wont let you download them. Sorry buddy. I've also been copying them to pinterest for this reason :)
Thanks for the plans. I have sold around 8 planter boxes based on your plan and am continuing to make them for sale. When i posted this on a woodworking forum i am being told that nails and glue is not sufficient because it will fall apart and in addition to whar i have done to reinforce with screws because your customers will call you back for repair. I have not added screws. Can you kindly let me know if you are having these issues and should i do something different?
Might try it on a different device, plans download on all three of my devices, not sure if its a browser setting or why it wont let you download them. Sorry buddy
I learned that after spraying a few. I batch spray a few orders at the same time. The charge is mainly for the time it takes to pull out the hose and clean the sprayer

All my plans are provided free of charge. They are in the description: click on "more" under the video, then click "more" to expand the description". Any plans I provide will be listed there :)

I would take my free marketing photos and post them, if you get any bits build them a box :)
What sprayer is that you found? I can't find a $15 sprayers anywhere. =)

Where do you get your cedar pickets? I'm in the northeast and all I can find is PT Pine.
Lowes :)
Are you the same guy who asks, "where are you located"? 🤔
Does Lowe's or Menards have better cedar fence pickets
Love your work! Curious though, is there a difference between cedar and incense cedar? Menards doesn’t specify but Lowe’s does. I wasn’t sure if there was a difference or which you used.
Not sure what incense cedar is 🤷♀️ sowwy. Is it cheaper?
@@WhosTheVoss about 40 cents difference. Just wondered which you used. I didn’t know incense cedar was even a thing until I read their description. 😂
Where are you located ? Seen the map and looked close to where I grew up
Near Peoria IL
Great video and entertaining. I just started watching your channel and I am a new subscriber. I just started selling on FB market place and was wondering when you make a sale locally do you give out your home address or do you make deliveries? Thank you and keep up the great job.
I give them my home address and I have a payment window where they drop in the cash and take their boxes, sounds shady but I don't know any criminals who plant flowers :P Ive only me two of the 40+ orders pucked up so far this year. Plus this way I dont have to try and schedule a time to meet and blah blah blah
What size boards are you buying?
Cedar pickets, 5-1/2" x 72"
How much time does it take you to build like a 16x16 planter box? I charge $40 for mine in Tennessee. But my wood store is 30 minutes, and so I would spend about 2 hours just getting wood.
My wood is also 30 minutes away. My kia holds 30 pickets and thats what I bring home lol. It only takes about 20 minutes to bang one of these out once you've built a few of them :)
Have you thought about just buying the spray can of Thompson water seal it’s $6-$7 it would probably be cheaper than just buying a sprayer at harbor freight and tossing it because of cleaning BELIEVE ME I hate cleaning a sprayer too it’s a pure dred when I have to clean mine but I believe you’d make out better with the spray can and maybe try the commercial spray bottles that Lowe’s sells with the blue and yellow lids they have a great mist to them and can be adjusted just a thought maybe it’ll help you save some
$$$ thanks for the video and your time best of luck to you buddy
Imma have to check them out! :) thanks buddy
Why is it when I click on the given website to get some of the plans that are supposedly free....I can neve get any of them? Just asking.
The boxes on my patio have been there for three years and are still solid :)
I laughed way too hard at the “Nails and Glue” bit
Laughter is a good thing! 🤣
What kind of deal do you have with your local flower/plant shop? How are the profits split?
They receive a fixed commission for each box they sell, it's easier than doing percentages. I have three boxes featured there and vendor them weekly

O I thought you were in tn
The online plans aren't loading for some reason

you should be using a resperator when spraying. also you are chargeing too little for spraying.
I learned that after spraying a few. I batch spray a few orders at the same time. The charge is mainly for the time it takes to pull out the hose and clean the sprayer
Has anyone been able to download any plans? I can't seem to get any of them.

Can you build market and sell these for me

By the way the picture shows 48 inches for the long planter but the video for the tall planter build shows 45 inches.
Picture is 46-5/8" for the mitered top. The video is wrong, I didnt catch it before uploading :P
