- Here I go over a theory some have made on JP3. Some people ask if Jurassic Park 3 changed the T.rex in that movie due to angry fans reaction to the Spinosaurus fight. The DVD for the film gives a size chart for the dinosaur that isn't exactly lining up with other info from 2001. So what do you guys think? Hope you all enjoy! :D

If the Spinosaurus and Roberta (the T.Rex) ever do meet, I think they'll just pass each other and won't fight at all. This'll symbolize how people should move on from it.
I'm worried people are going to be too persistent regarding the rematch anyhow. Its understandable why they want it, but I feel like what's done is done.
the jp3 spinosaurus is the only spinosaurus and I think it's stupid to bring it back just to go extinct for a rematch, I agree no rematch.

@@mystic_bat8442 Problem is that Horner is actually wrong about that lmao. As a great of a paleontologist he is, the T-Rex is built as an apex predator, and has had clear evidence that it hunts.

@@VelociraptorsOfSkyrim In reality, the T-Rex was a really successful hunter and was indeed a killer. Often killing each other or other “apex” predators in their area. The T-Rex would have truly killed the Spinosaurus if he had followed the facts rather than his feelings on the creature -_- He should have used a Carnotaurus or the Ceratosaurus for a more accurate depiction of the events. Then again, Jurassic Park/World doesn’t follow logic and reality. Everyone knows the Spinosaurus was a hybrid. The Indominus, Indoraptor, and dinosaurs even being a thing are enough. And the movie T-Rex broke bones by shaking rather than simply biting like a real T-Rex.
I wonder why they still used him as the paleontology consultant for Jurassic films... As much as his claims regarding Tyrannosaurus, he might have the right idea about Stygimoloch being a juvie stage of Pachycephalosaurus

It's called "the Worf effect." It's a lazy way to show how "strong" a new bad guy is by having them easily beat another known strong character.

Honestly if they went into deeper lore at the time of the Spino being a hybrid (which would most likely give it am edge) and gave us an actual fight and not a one-sided slaughter, I almost guarantee that no matter who would of won, it would have been a great moment of the series.

The Rex vs Spino fight is the LEAST problematic part of that movie. I actually was shocked and went "damn, if THAT THING took down a Rex, God help the poor people on that island."
When I first saw JP 3 I thought the idea of another predatory dinosaur that was even bigger and badder than the T-Rex was pretty cool

As a kid in 2001, I never saw the issue with the Spino. When Alan said it was something bigger than the Rex, I just took into consideration that there are dinosaurs bigger and worse than the T.Rex. I never got upset that it killed the mascot for the franchise as a result.

Uh, guys, Tyrannosaurus would have crushed Spinosaurus rather easily in real life. THAT's the problem with the battle. But, that aside, don't forget the other, perhaps the main issue: you don't build up this epic confrontation between 2 badasses to get people into the theater, then, cheat them with a few seconds of one killing the other with hardly a struggle.
In other words, the fight was over almost as soon as it started and we're sitting there, "that's it? THAT'S IT????"
Whilst i do think that the whole backlash against this fight got blown way too out of proportion, this whole trend of having the fan-favorite thing being killed by a new "cooler" version is hella stupid and needs to stop cause it literally never works. It didn't work when they replaced Optimus Prime with Rodimus Prime, didn't work with the Spino, and also didn't work with the new Dalek Paradigm on Doctor Who

Regarding Doctor Who: The idea was good. The new pure Daleks destroying the old impure ones makes a lot of sense. Even the way it happens was pretty well written. What made it suck was the design of the new Daleks.

To me, I don’t really think a rematch between the T.Rex and Spinosaurus is really necessary, cause I feel like Jurassic World already made up for that by having the T.Rex break through the Spinosaurus skeleton and fight the Indominus Rex.
Or there is always Primal Carnage if people keep asking. Made peace with it.
And there are spinosaurus fans so if they do a rematch they’re going to have to make the tea Rex win because then the tea Rex fans will get even more mad but then the spinosaurus fans will be mad it’s just a never ending cycle of pain for everyone

@@leongaming9834 Jack Horner, a paleontologist who had a retarded theory that Tyrannosaurus was primarily a scavenger, was a consultant for JP3. It's very possible his biased views on Trex may have influenced the direction of the film.
Its clear from the film what they were trying to do. This fight is kind of like how wrestling promotions work. if you have a new guy coming in and you want to show that this new guy needs to be taken seriously to the audience you have one of your establish stars put them "over" by losing. That basically what happened The Spino was the new guy into the franchise and they wanted him to be a big threat. So they establish if early on by having the T-Rex take the loss, to basically tell the audience. This new guy is a big deal. Just a story telling deceive, don't know why people get so upset.
Its because lots of people were attached to Tyrannosaurus rex the most.
I was a year old around the time of Jurassic Park 3, which was 2001. I didnt have a reaction much, as it was the movie that got me into Jurassic Park in the first place.
Cause it could've worked had they not have the fight at all. Showing the Spino brutally wreck an airplane in seconds with it's arms and bulky body.
The rex vs spino fight doesn't add anything to the plot at all other than the directors wanting to jack themselves off in front of the old fans.

And a rex wouldve lost again in JW if Blue hadn't saved the day. In wildlife lions get killed by hyenas sometimes. Despite being the kinf of the jungle they still get wrecked from time to time. Ppl need to get over it. The tyrannosaurus can be killed by a larger carnivore especially an intelligent hybrid like Indominus.

I think you’re totally right, Klayton. I mean, if you actually look at the fight in the film, they’re roughly the same size. I’m with you though, the fight never really bothered me personally, I know they wanted to focus on a new threat for the movie, and I was excited to see a new big bad. Spinosaurus wasn’t a super well known animal either, back then, so to see a new fairly unknown dinosaur in JP was really exciting, at least for me. I loved the T. Rex, but we had a lot of it the previous two films, I’m glad they went in a little different direction.
That all being said though, yes, I think the way they handled to fight could’ve been a little more respectful to the Rex and the fans. The fight was pretty abrupt, the Spino basically shows up and kills the Rex. So I definitely get some of the anger from fans. Had they made the fighter a little longer, and a little more balanced, and even, Idk, made the fight a draw, or have the Rex give the Spino a serious wound.. I think that would’ve gone a long way as far as fans were concerned.
A little late but I totally agree what you said. 20 years ago I was upset too but I got over it for two reasons:
One the writers wanted to introduce the new "Big bad" and went better introduction than the clap the previous big bad.
Still salty but I understand.
Plus spinosaurus is clearly larger and longer than jp3 T-Rex.
You would think in nature size matters a lot sometimes more than smarts and agility.
Plus there was a moment when the T-Rex left himself wide open for the spinosaurus to deliver a lethal counter.
So again I'm still salty by how abrupt the fight was I can accept it because the Rex left himself open and the spinosaurus is clearly larger and stronger.

A rematch would feel super forced, they already symbolized a rematch in World by having Rexy destroy the Spinosaurus skeleton.

I'd actually be fine with a rematch, but it SHOULDN'T be a 30 second fight and instead an actual epic showdown. I also am hesitant of the Spinosaurus biting the dust; but if it already got enough screentime in JW Dominion, I'm fine with it dying
Yeah but it doesn’t feel the same like when the T. rex killed the Carno or the Raptors. Think about this what if u were a Carno fanboy and u where really angry that the T Rex killed the Carno so easily without a fight. Then in JWD a Carno just destroys a T Rex skeleton and roars. Wouldn’t it be more satisfying and vengeful for a Carno to kill a T Rex with a awesome fight?

Honestly seems like splitting hairs for those who insist the T.rex was "way smaller". The Spinosaurus was also downsized in the size chart and a 37 foot long T.rex is only going to be marginally smaller than a 40 foot one of comparable build. Klayton's right on the money here.

Nah. The JP3 Spinosaurus was of intended size (different from the real one). Its been given 43'9 all the way to 46 feet because the maquette has a curved tail vs the CGI's straightened tail.
I always thought of it as Rexy being at the peak of her size or unnaturally large because she was well fed and kept on its own.
The Sorna rexes were just more "naturally grown" in about the same size range as the living rex

I just think the creators of JP3 wanted to make a new dinosaur look bigger and badder for a new generation of jurqssic park fans than the same ole trex
I've been on that size chart for years now. It's legit (at least Spino, T-Rex and Raptor).
The maquette Tyrannosaurus (yes, that includes Rexy) is meant to represent the theoretical full scale of an over 36 feet long and almost 15 feet tall animal. Angry fans have accused those dimensions to be that of a subadult because they choose not to see Spino being intended as "Bigger than T-Rex"
Edit: I know of the 40+ foot listing of T.Rex but I take that as in-universe visual approximacy. Believe me, before I learned of JP1 Rex's real size I also was sold on it being 40 feet long. The chart doesn't do its size justice.
@@tnb4509 44 feet is Rexy's size from 22 years of nonstop growth (Jurassic World onwards). Definitely based on reptiles' tendency to grow throughout their lives.
Edit: I just realized. Since Spielberg had the tendency to upscale his dinos for more wow factor, maybe the JP Rexes were 40 feet in universe. They just give the 37-foot animatronics more close-up to fulfill this illusion.

Well, if he does appear, there is a chance that the producers will acknowledge the real-life Spinosaurus length of 50 feet.

I have the official "behind-the-scenes" version of that poster! In Canada, Burger King was giving them out when JP3 first came out.
I still wouldn't have the JP3 fight any other way. Rexy's comeback in JW was so great, partly BECAUSE of how the T-Rex was used in JP3! Fans wanted better for the T-Rex, and we got it! If the fight in JP3 was different, we might not have the epic JW fight today!
Not to mention I-rex was closest to Spino we can get (bigger; forearms) but worse.
I love this perspective. When it looked like Queen Rexy was gonna bite it in JW a lot of people (myself included) were thinking “Oh fuck not again”
Likewise the Spino skeleton smash wouldn’t have had as much impact were it not used as a Fuck-you to JP3, at best it would be a nod to the museum display getting destroyed in the original JP movie

I seriously just don't get why this scene caused such a big stink. It was a cool fight, the spino really was bigger than the rex (its not a fictional character like Godzilla) and one rex going down doesn't mean that they would lose that matchup every time.

@@aryshandono3249 i would love to see a proper Acrocanthosaurus in a film or series get respect and love it is actually believed that the spines were holding muscles together and added bulk to the animal in other words in an accurate Acrocanthosaur we would mot see any exposed spine at all, no more than in normal vertebrates like bison. The Acrocanthosaurus was a very large and powerfully built animal, it is shown this way in JW Evolution demonstrating a much bulkier body and build to it.

Resizing the T-Rex has to be the most accurate accident the JP Franchise ever did. As of now, the most recent estimations of the Spinosaurus (the biggest specimen, MSNM V4047) is still smaller compared to the likes of Sue and Scotty

@@ahahaha6228 Look up Sue and Scotty's latest size and mass estimates and compare it with the biggest confirmed Spino's (MSNM V4047) latest estimates (as close to 2020 as possible. You'll see what I'm talking about.

I know how you feel about the T. rex vs Spinosaurus fight in Jurassic Park III but I was very disappointed with the fight as well because Jack Horner made the Spinosaurus more powerful than the Rex in Jurassic Park III.
If anything, it’s all Jack Horner’s fault for this chaotic mess of the Spinosaurus and T. rex fight.

But I'm starting to think while it has not yet appeared in that many films (but plenty in video games), Spinosaurus has also become somewhat overrated

Actually Klayton, after the release of JP3, every kid in my school LOVED the Spinosaurus including me. It was a cooler and more dominant dinosaur. We even said it's like a real life Godzilla since it can swim lol.
Years later the Spinosaurus lost it's popularity and now people hate it.

I always thought that the T-Rex in JW3 was a fully grown adult and that the Spino won the fight because of its hands allowing it to grab the Rex and break its neck. The Spino did get bitten on the neck but, since it was described as a "super predator", InGen must've designed it to have greater resistance to damage.
I only became aware of the controversy surrounding the Rex vs Spino fight about 6 years ago. The size chart thing comes across as damage control.

I remember watching the tv spots of jp3 & my jaw dropped like "the t.rex actually dies?!". The whole fight did angered me as a kid ( a little bit now as an adult ). Don't get me wrong spinosaurus is a cool dinosaur , but t.rex will always be #1 imo.

I always thought that the DVD size chart was made to further show how bigger the Spino is rather than making a retcon of sorts to appease fans.
That being said, what always caught my attention was the moment when the Rex almost steps on Alan. You can see his foot is smaller than that of the female Rex from TLW (whose foot almost crushed Carter completely). This makes me wonder if the female Rexes ("Rexy" and "Doe") are actually bigger than males.
Anyway, the fight scene in JP3 never bothered me. I liked they chose another species as the main predator, and the Spino was a cool choice that added more variety to the franchise.

@@aryshandono3249 totally agree with you. A fighting game would be neat. Also, there is an official jp arcade game from 2015 that does feature the rematch. Klayton did a video on it a while ago. It's a short scene, but it's still a rematch. I think that and seeing rexy destroy the spino skeleton in jw should be enough. The writers have been trying to find ways to say they're sorry for jp3 ever since it came out in 2001. We as fans should know when to stop bugging them.
So glad this channel exists, klayton (imo at least) is on the same level as star wars theory in terms of passion and care for a franchise and the fans. Happy to have stumbled upon this to highten my knowledge on one of my favorite franchises.

Size chart Rex in pre-production looks about the same size as the DVD release. I think the perceived difference is just the power of suggestion because the Rex has the sub-adult label on it and the Ankylosaurus is between the Rex and Spino in the DVD release (unlike the pre-production chart which is less spaced out and has a Galli or something between them, but close enough that the Rex is right on the Spino’s tail), making it more difficult to tell.
Edit: also you can tell they’ve only applied the label and kept the size the same if you compare the size to the Para. In both images the Rex is slightly larger than it.

@@cnarylmaz998 so snoke was introduced as the new big bad of the new sw trilogy. He was hyped up to be a sort of new palpatine style puppet master pulling strings from the shadows.
Then rian Johnson comes along and shouts "yeet!" and the next thing you know, snoke has been unceremoniously killed off, in an almost embarrassing fashion, by kylo ren. It's incredibly stupid.
The final movie adds insult to injury by revealing that snoke, this big bad puppet master, was nothing more than a clone created by palpatine-who, for all intents and purposes, was DEAD. It was so hilariously dumb. That reveal, is very similar to the spino coming out of nowhere and dunking on the rex
I don’t think a rematch is necessary. I’ve grown to like both dinosaurs, and they both have things that make them cool. If they did meet up again, I’d rather see them working together taking something else down instead of fighting each other. Would make a nice sequence.

The first time I seen the fight back in 01 I was shocked, but I got over it during that same viewing because the Spino was so cool for the rest of the movie. Next time I seen it I didn’t even care. Spino was in my top 10 favorite dinos of all time that have been discovered even if it’s because of the movie form.

I think your theory is solid. After all, JP3 was hastily put together mid production so I can believe that the outcome was no different. Three things:
1. Horner most likely made the spino win because he hates T-rexs (yes he has said that publicly)
2. Theres no point in arguing because the two would have never fought in the first place (and even if they did there is a probability of Rex wining, because it is better built to fight other dinosaurs, not because its a t-rex)
3.(This was said by someone else) But I think it would be nice if the trex and spino met and didn't fight, it would symbolize that people need to move on. If the spino dies it should be to humans, not the T-rex.
It's funny because even *IF* the 37ft long Tyrannosaurus in JP3 was a "subadult" the Spinosaurus was also a subadult at 43ft long when it reached lengths of 50-60ft. Of course now they're taking refuge in the "Spinosaurus is a hybrid" fan theory where Ceratosaurus, Corythosaurus and Ankylosaurus are completely ignored even though they were similar to their real life counterparts. All of Jurassic park 3’s criticisms have nothing to do with the trex losing imo, if anything the spinosaurus was the best thing about the movie and it was better than he was the main dinosaur instead of the trex to show how powerful and deadly the spino was, plus the spinosaurus is one of the coolest dinosaurs that has ever existed and this is coming from a trex fan. The only criticisms I have with the spinosaurus are that the animatronic and cgi effects haven’t aged well.
The bird cage, boat sequence and raptor chase cgi effects surpass the original Jurassic Park.

I just rewatched Jurassic Park 3 the other day.
I never understood the theory of the subadult T.rex, if you watch the movie it’s obvious that the Rex was a full grown adult.
What I do believe however is that this particular Rex has no correlation with the family we see in TLW, I do not believe it was the Buck from 1997, being that the color was completely different, and it surely wasn’t the infant, in 4 years he wouldn’t be anywhere near an adult or subadult.

I think the problem people really had with it was the huge amount of marketing put into it as well. If you go back and watch almost all the trailers have at least one shot of t rex and spino preparing to go at it. And this took up a large amount of the marketing. So to suddenly go from that to a less than 5 minute encounter that kills off the icon of the franchise not only insulted fans on the other two films it insulted casual people that paid for this hugely marketed aspect.
I don't know why people want the T Rex and Spinosaurus to have a rematch. Actually, I'm okay with them not having a rematch.

I'm sure the reason they use the bull-rexx animatronic was to save money. The behind the scenes of JP3 was a huge mess through most of that production. Their budget was probably screwed up as well. Using a previously built prop, stage, or animatronic is a good way to save money. Especially when it's one that big. Having it lose to the spinosaurus makes sense story wise as well. They were trying to establish this new dinosaur as not just a new threat but that there was seriously something wrong with it. It turning out to be some kind of hybrid that we find on the Masrani site makes it winning make sense. It also just shows nature at work. Sometimes the local big bad carnivore can still get its butt kicked by something else. The way nature works. T-rex was having a bad day.

It's sad when the Rex dies fighting Spino but I do like Spino and at least it wasn't Rexy even Rexy would know not to mess with Spino and it's actually interesting to see different meat eating dinosaurs that are less popular in the spotlight for once The Land Before Time movie series did that in their sequel movies.
There's also a Spinosaurus in The Land Before Time Wisdom of Friends and he looked really cool and very similar to Jurassic Park Spino.

Firstly, I love your videos. Secondly I have to point out it wasn't remotely how as you suggested with the Star Wars analogy. Everyone acts like it killed off "THE" T. Rex, but it killed "A" T. Rex. A rex we've never seen before. I would understand somewhat if it killed Rexy but it was a random one. You're right about the Rex being an adult though. That was always the intention. Spino was just supposed to be a very powerful animal and that's all there is to it. He made for a very entertaining dinosaur and since JP3 he has remained on my top spot of favourite dino in the franchise. They did a great job with him and the film was good fun. He didn't replace the T. Rex like everyone suggests, he just kills a random one. Admittedly the fight wasn't as good as it should have been but that's because the Spino animatronic destroyed the rex animatronic, so they had no choice but to do it in CGI due to scheduling.
Speaking from the heart here: Honestly, people just need to get over the spino killing the t-rex. In my opinion, the moment when the spino killed the rex is powerful. Why? Because it subverted our expectations. What did you expect them to do with the third film? Things had to change, and in my opinion it was done beautifully. Do I wish Jurassic Park 3 had been done better? Yes. Regardless, I'm still a fan of the film ,flaws and all. True fans understand that each film needs to be watched with a different state of mind. Jurassic Park 3 is a badass film, and I love it.

There's no way a long, slim-jawed, fine-toothed predator like Spinosaurus would have anything like the bone crushing power of a T-Rex bite. If they'd fought, the spino would have been defeated or killed quickly

When I saw the fight-scene for the first time in a TV-special, I thought the Spinosaurus just killed a Velociraptor.
