Excellent video. I’ve been overhauling Cessna nose gear struts since 1967. Your video is spot on. Lately I’ve encountered severe wear on the surface of the centering cam (both the upper torque link and the barrel). I developed a method where I build up the worn surfaces by TIG welding. I fixture the barrel in my milling machine and using an end mill, I machine the surface to original dimension. I repeat on the steel insert of the upper torque link also.

When you unhook the nose strut steering links do you have to re rig the gear? Thanks

@@jacobgibson7210 Jacob - If the nose gear steering was in rig before disassembly, it will stay in rig after reassembly.

Worth noting the needle bearings should be inspected and at a minimum regreased with a water resistant grease to inhibit washout like Mobile 28 or 33. These bearings require hand packing are are usually bone dry. Those with the grease fitting usually only receive partial grease. These Torrington bearings (still made in the USA by Koyo) are inexpensive and easy for a machine shop to press fit, if replacement is needed.

I really like the love you put into the cleanliness, work and video. Personally, I'd use a shorter tube for the fluid so more air gets vented faster.

Thank you for making this excellent video, I finally fixed my leaky nose strut after 3 yrs. Some idiot mechanic totally screwed it up years ago. It had vertical file marks inside the tube and they pounded the piston in with a hammer or something. Both the top and bottom O rings has small chunks missing from the sharp holes.I used a die grinder and a polishing wheel inside the strut tube. The top and bottom O rings were still tighter that they were in this video. 1978 C152 with over 10k hours. On my 206 some dumb ass left out the wedge ring on the bottom. However, the McFarland scraper ring was slightly too big. I had to use my old scraper ring. Probably a Chinese manufacturer. The only thing I wish I did was rotated the piston 180 degrees so it would be easier to get a air hose on it. Put the high part forward. I also think vaseline would work better on the O rings.

Major difference between the this strut and the one that’s on my Cessna O-2A. But gave me a great idea of what to look for and what to do. She needs her strut repacked as well, and much more.

The problem I had with two of my C152’s was the chrome coming off the strut. I found a shop that repaired chrome on industrial hydraulic components and motorcycle forks. Knowing how people don’t want to touch aircraft parts for legal reasons I told the guy when I called him on the phone that it was a part of an industrial jack. When I presented the parts to him he looked at me and said “ these look just like Cessna 152 nose legs “ ………….. clearly I was not the first to get the chrome on the leg repaired by him !

Best video out there on a Cessna nose strut. Thanks for posting. Do you have experience in putting a 206 nose fork on a 172 for bigger tires? Would you just replace the fork only and leave the strut together ?

@@EH25J yes, the process is basically the same. I happen to have a parts list for my 172N and I also ordered a new decal that the strut haas in it but had worn off. I have mine rebuilt and mounted. I just need to fill with fluid. And put the front wheel back on

No! NO! NEVER EVER push down on the horizontal stabilizer to raise the nose gear on ANY CESSNA. Far too many have been "misinformed" about this. The front spar of the stabilizer was never made for that and is prone to cracks developing the attach bolts. PLEASE, NEVER DO THIS. Instead, use an engine hoist and lift from the lift shackle on the engine.

I have a huge problem with this video you are not absolutely by any circumstances to put regular compressed air into the strut you're supposed to use nitrogen.
