  • Country White Jamaican, Miss Mel shares stories of raising a blended family in Jamaica and some gems from her childhood as well. Raising a family in Jamaica is a great experience and Mel and her family have many fond memories and shared experiences.
Going to school in Jamaica is an experience we all share as a family and many a family dinner is spent remembering and sharing our stories and how similar they are.
We love Jamaica and it will always be home to us.
I hope you enjoy my little trip down memory lane in this video.

Oh my gosh you jogged so many memories today! My big Sister went to Immaculate Conception and my Cousin went to Holy Childhood although neither were Boarders. My Sister went in the days when the students wore little straw hats and I used to use her hat in the mornings to shade my eyes from the glare of the Sun while Mummy drove us to school. I went to a little school run by an elderly English lady by the name of Miss Butler. One morning as we were dropping off my Sister at Immaculate they made the announcement that the girls no longer had to wear hats and I remember all the students threw their hats in the air and hats fell like rain. My Mummy worked at JBC as Bobby Ghisays Secretary when I was a young teenager and I made firm friends with Mr. Hall who gave me informal lesson on how to present the news on TV. He was a lovely person and so was Mr. Ghisays who I consider family. Remember when TV used to star at 4 PM and the JBC logo would come on with a sort of shaking chattering "brrr brrr" noise? Haha! Oh and my big Brother went to JC and then boarded at Monroe and of course we all loved a Bruce Lee Kickaz! :)

I agree that power-cuts can bring about some of the best family time. For me, I remember (growing up in a Jamaican family in rural-ish/suburban USA), whenever there was a power-cut, me and my sister would jump up and whoop -- because that meant the electric stove was out (making cooking out of the question), and Daddy would drive out and get Chinese food, and we would all eat by lantern-light. Good memories! 😄🎉🥡🔦

Very interesting and informative video. Your presentation is par excellence, without any hint of embellishment. Despite the circumstances that literally "forced" you out of Jamaica, you continue to cherish the love you have for Jamaica. It's very refreshing to hear from someone, who, despite having her personal life upended by a traumatic experience, continues to embrace the love for the piece of rock aka Jamaica. I applaud you for you for being so candid about your experiences in Jamaica and trust the information you share will motivate others to cultivate some positive vibes about the country which is dear to your heart. Blessings and keep warm.

Yaady respek! Perhaps only your Jamaican audience will know what kickaz are 😀
We have some JC connection here between myself, your son though he never attended, and Dennis Hall.
Jamaicans must be one of the most resourceful people there are. We would sometimes use power outages to tell stories on the block or in lanes where we resided. We even played football. We must have had perfect vision to see the ball in the black of night. We lived in a lane off the main road in Kingston. It was never lit and even when electric light reflected from the adjacent lane into ours, in sporadic locations, it was still dark. Heading home as a child when it got dark was nerve-wracking because of all the duppy and rolling calf stories the older folks and boys used to tell us. So, from the top of the lane where the street and lane intersect, I would muster up some adrenaline packed courage and take off like a rocket. The thinking was that if I could run fast enough noh duppy nah kech mi, not even Donald Quarry. It was probably 150m or so when I slowed to barge in through the gate and then another sprint to the house's entrance door.

We all ran so much as kids that some of us became world champions. If your mother shouted your name from half mile away we would sprint home in no time and tell her you were just in the backyard. You just never mentioned whose yard and that it was 1/2 mile away.

Jamaicans challenge me all the time when I say racism is not that a big thing in Jamaica, classism is. Not that racism doesn't exist but it pales in comparison to the level of classism. I too have never experienced racism in Jamaica.

I agree. I have been challenged by my black friends who say, who am I to say that I have not experienced racism in JA. But thing is it is not a one way street. I have seen arrogant white people behave like they are above others. It makes me sick to see it. Cut us all - same red blood! But ya, I did not experience racism in Jamaica and since I was a minority - all credit to black Jamaicans. To di wurl!!!

I have been floored recently when racism is mentioned by different groups in Jamaica. Classism was in your face. I went to school with kids that didn't socialize with me because we obviously couldn't afford the things they had. Funny enough some of those kids chat me up today. Life I guess.
