1986 Yugo GV - The Worst Car Ever?

- It's regarded as the worst car ever made. Bob Oseychik of Simsbury, CT owns a 1986 Yugo GV that he acquired for $1,000 in fall 2012. It's still in showroom condition and runs well ... as you'll see in this RIDE-CT video. For more on the Yugo, visit classiccars.ride-ct.com.
Keep that little car going. I still have my 88 Yugo GVX 1300 with a 5spd and AC. I've had it since 2007 and it's never failed me. I've had up to 90 mph on the highway and have gotten up to 41 mpg of you drive it right. Still easy to get parts for and easy to work on.

Born in France, as Yougoslav from actual Serbia, I remember when we go with my father and my uncle, in the Kragujevac city Zastava's factory to buy a new Zastava 101... I was 7yo... We come with a Peugeot car from France, but for me the Zastava, and after the Yugo, as a kid was a really good cars (for their prices)... I had a lot of cars, 2 Peugeot 605 SV3.0 V6, Mercedes S Klass 400 Cdi, Mercedes Cls 350, Land Rover Discovery TD5, Audi A6 2.0 and Audi A8 4.2 V8... but last week I go with a neighbor in its Yigo 45 to a little town near and it still works perfectly, for 100 euros/usd a year cost to maintain... My last Audi service near Paris was 1400 euros just for basic filters change, oil ... So yes the Yugo was to Yougoslavia what the Citroën 2CV or Renault 4L were to France or VW to getmany, cheap, reliable car for people ❤❤❤
Nice variety of cars in your past. The Yugo in the story is kept in "like new" condition.
@@ride-ct-classiccars i always keep almost all my cars, in Serbia my first Peugeot and all others 😅 just the police take the second peugeot from street in France after few months parked at the same place, don't pay attention, never go claim it after few months 😔 the price of the car and park fees... it was destructed, old one from 1998... and the S-Class I give it to a friend, no more place, it was the long version, 5.3 meters long... Just while writing you 1 message, a Yugo 45 pass, a red one, looks very well (in a small town in Serbia, Despotovac wher I go to buy some supplies), but today Yugo, it's less than 5% of the cars even here...
This man should sell T-shirts with that Yugo on it! Yugos, and small cars like Rabbits, LeCars, Pintos, Gremlins, Omnis, and Chevettes, were common in the small walking town I grew up in.
'walking town' if everybody in my town owned those cars, they'd all be walking, too.
I had a Yugo and I never had to push it. It was better than the Ford pinto and Hyundai Excel.

It's not the worst car ever made, but the worst car sold in the US market. There's a lot of Soviet garbage that's worse.

It's basically a Fiat 128, which was an average at best car. Their production quality was sub par for most imports at the time, but not much worse than the VWs that were shipped here int he late 70s or early 80s. On the plus side, parts were cheap and easy to obtain, at least in the late 80s and early 90s. It was a simple design that was easy to work on.
I love it. I would really enjoy this car. I have a thing for oddball cars, and when the Yugo came out I was fascinated with then in Junior high/highschool.

At one point in the mid '90s I was maintaining a Yugo (my girlfriend's) and a Chevette (mine). Both were better to drive than their reputations would have it, both were old worn-out cheap cars that broke down a lot but the parts situation was night-and-day - once importation stopped and the war in Yugoslavia started, the Yugo parts supply dried up while the Chevette's were GM readily available and cheap. I was fixing what was on the Yugo or looking for a junkyard part that I could make one from two, and getting Chevy parts from Kmart.

It's a simple basic transpotation kind of car cheap and basic. Fine for aroound town back and 4th to work not a car you pile up family in and drive long distances. Also people did not change oil in them or timing belt's in them every forty thounsand miles.

Country exists as Serbia. And this car is essentially Fiat 127 from Italy. I think, bigger issue would be getting it up to 70mph.

Yugo 65 was actually great car, and it could do 183 kmh or 113mph (my crazy friend actually measured it precisely). The thing is this car came from a poor country and if you live there (as i do), parts are 5X cheaper than other cars like VW or Citroen. Its amazing to have your car break down only to realise you need 10$ to get it running again 😄 And people from Serbia are mostly brainwashed nationalists (kinda like US), so they think all Serbian is the best and this was never the best car, idea was to resemble Golf mk1 and to compete with it, but its worse than Golf in every way. Much cheaper tho, its more of a alternative to old Lada, but not not this model (Koral- hatchback), Yugo Scala or Zastava 128. they are sedans.
When I was a kid I joked about these cars. Now I’d kind of like to own one just for fun.

make sure you get a better battery, those require water in the cells, also before 30,000 go ahead and get a new timing belt, careful with door release and window cranks theyll snap off, best get a new radio from a reputable brand and speakers.
I think it's safe to say it's not going to 30,000 miles, he's got 4,000 on it now and it's broke down several times.
Ah the old joke, why do Yugo's have heated rear window? Keep your hands warm while you push it! They sold a bunch of them and hardly any survive, even in salvage yards.
Remember people. This little car moved a whole nation... Perfect? No. Basic? Yes. That's all what the then Yugoslavs needed and the Zastava/Yugo offered. If it's looked after and not neglected it's a good, honest commuter. There is room for minor improvements, if you feel your hands are capable, you can improve it yourself on a Sunday.

@@ride-ct-classiccars It's negligence that harms this car. If maintained in a good manner it will run forever AND economically. It is much more decent than people actually believe it is. Look for sites and enthusiasts groups for improvements, especially the gear lever linkage and other related stuff and you will find all answers. As for parts, search relevant websites from Serbia. You will be surprised. You did a good purchase.

there is a similar story about a Yugo in Spain that wasn't sold at an authorised dealer back then. Later on, from 1993 onwards the car could not be registered because of anti-pollution laws. However, for some years now, these vehicles can be registered as historical vehicles (30+ years), and that is why its registration has an 'H' (H = Historical) as first letter.

I think Yugo is often given the "worst" crown simply because it was so visible at the time of its arrival. There weren't that many Fiat dealers (I had two horrible Fiats) and Trabants weren't sold here, at least I don't think they were.
