  • Since I've driven both, I thought it would be interesting to see how these midsize truck competitors stack up for price and features. I compare the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4 vs the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road and I'm shocked what I discover.

For what it is worth, I've had my 2023 Canyon AT4 since March and have 15k miles on it now, GM 1.5" suspension lift on 285/75r17 tires. I love this truck, traded my 2022 F150 in on it and never looked back! It's been a great truck and feels so much better than the previous gen, rides great and plenty of power. No problems with mine knock on wood! It's been the perfect size for me and does more than what I ever need a truck to do

Talk to me in 5 years when both trucks have 100,000 miles on them. Suddenly the value will perspective will seem much more clear on resale. Just drive a 5 year old GMC vs a similar Toyota you will know why Toyota’s hold their value and people are willing to pay for that.
I’m not a Toyota fan especially with what the dealers have been doing to its loyal customers but there is no arguing with build quality, resale value and maintenance costs when compared. Toyota is always worth a few thousand more dollars once those figures and considerations are taken into account.

@@Seaward1224 I didn't pay 48k on a truck worried about the next owner, I bought it because I liked it the most for me personally. @@Seaward1224The jury is out on the new turbo engine for the new Tacoma. Reliability and turbos aren’t the norm. Can Toyota change that maybe but from what I have seen so far with various TH-camrs so far the new Tacoma engine is looking pretty underwhelming for sure. The GMC looks like the bargain right now.

We’ve had 4 Colorado/Canyons at work now starting with a ‘15 which went 375k with no major repairs (put in a new engine and transmission and it went to 465k). Our ‘19 has 300k on it, no major repairs and the other 2 are around 150k each, no major issues. I know these are a new design now, but the performance and reliability has been rock solid. We also have a phenomenal dealer that takes care of us really well. That’s definitely part of the equation. The G80 locker is awesome for folks who aren’t hardcore off-roading, but run the trucks in bad weather, job sites, etc. It’s always “on” in 2hi, 4hi, 4lo, doesn’t matter. We’re looking to buy two AT4s soon.

I’m a die hard Tacoma fan but $6k is $6k. Glad I have my 2022 3rd Gen Off Road. Paid $41k. Reliability is a plus for me. The average owner doesn’t keep their trucks long enough to need that level of reliability. They trade too often. I plan to keep mine. But if I were one to trade off more frequently I’d be more likely to save the $6k and go with the GMC.

Prices are crazy but in the end when someone like me looks for a truck,, reliability is always a major selling point and with the track record of these GM midsized trucks I would never take a chance on them. Now if I could change trucks every 2 years then it wouldn't matter but I keep things for a longer time and higher mileage.

I have had my 2023 Canyon since March and it is reliable rugged, and high tech with impressive styling. I disagree, I have seen Tacomas with peeling paint and engine and drive train issues just like other brands, but it's rare. If someone loves a particular brand and plans on keeping it than they will most likely get an extended warranty on it once the factory warranty runs out. Canyon is the best truck I have ever owned and I have been owning GM trucks for over 40 years and never sold any of my trucks because of continuous quality issues. Electronics seems to be an issue as auto companies have gone through growing pains with the suppliers that produce these high tech software and touch screens but most are reliable compared to 15 year old technologies.

@@johnwhitneykokalis9990Wow! how many miles do you have on you 2023. I really don't see how you can say it reliable and you've had it less than a year. There are many owners of Canyons that are complaining about their issues which I'll post a video below. You can say that about Tacoma's but they will have way less problems than any other midsized truck and that has been proven year after year after year. My son has a 2023 TRD OFF Road Tacoma since January 0f 23 and of course no problems at all but that is expected of a Tacoma and 1 year is no test for it. Check this video because for every 1 person who says they have had no problem with their Canyons you can find 5 more that do have problems.

The Tacomas now come with new 4 cylinder engines and powertrains that aren't proven. The GMC/Chevy comes with 2.7L 4cylinders that have already been used in the Silverado/Sierra for the past 2 to 3 years, with very little issues. Its basically a diesel engine made to run on gas. I trust they will run just fine for long term reliability. If you want a new midsize truck that still has a v6 in it, the Nissan Frontier is your only option, I test drove that one, while its perfectly fine, its not anything special and the interior is more bland than plain oatmeal.
On top of that, the price difference in a tacoma with the leather package becomes even greater and youre looking at 8k difference on both trucks. Toyota is delusional.

  • @duggydo
    @duggydo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

Those prices are crazy. I did some comparisons on real estate over the past 4 years and the prices are nearly double! I don't think trucks are quite double yet, but at least 1.5x what they used to be 4 years ago. That would be an interesting video to compare base, mid, and premium truck prices over the last 5 years or so.

    Hey Tim,
    “Happy New Year”
Here’s my take on these two new trucks.
    I’ve owned 3 new Toys a 87 SR5 X cab 4X4 I4 turbo, a 90 SR5 X cab 4X4 V6 and a 94 SR5 X cab 4X4 V6 all with 5sp manuals.
All were great trucks with few issues and had great resale value .
I was going to buy a 15 Colorado but, they were in short supply so, got a 15 Wrangler instead.
If you want specific features go with the GMC or if your willing to wait and see what Toyota can find for you then go that route and be aware that Toyota’s do have better resale value and tend to be more reliable!
You may pay more upfront and have fewer features with the Taco but, you can more than make up for it when you sell it even several years later.
As always stay safe and healthy.
    Ron

For me I like the GMC better for a lot of reasons except one. They now only offer the small bed. When I bought my Colorado the first option I selected was the long bed and I went from there. After having it for a few years I really couldn't see me wanting a tiny bed so that kills the GMC for me. I tend to keep my trucks for a long time so the resale value is less of a issue. If the GMC offered the long bed option it would probably be my next truck.

I like the look of the GMC inside and outside far more than the Toyota, but with those option packages it does seem like you get more for the money with the Toyota. That trim also has a selectable locking differential and crawl control, and I really like that they have rear coil springs rather than the leaves on the GMC. I still like the GMC better, but it'll be interesting to see how they stack up in the real world, and I'm curious about the actual fuel efficiency of the Toyota. The headlights on the GMC is a non-issue for me, I would set it to auto on day one and probably never touch it again.

I plan on getting the GMC Canyon. I think it looks better. I think the interior looks better. More torque. My only issue what Tim said in the video as far as the headlights go. What happens if your screen tears up. My wife and I just bought a new 2024 Chevy trailblazer. We leave the headlight knob on auto. Haven't thought twice about it. So, the fact that it stays in auto doesn't bother me. Just the fact if the screen tears up.

Wow, these are equipped very differently. First, why the Toyota Off-Road and not the Sport 4wd? The GMC 4wd system is no better than the basic Taco Sport 4wd system. But the biggest thing is when you were done with the GMC, it does not have moonroof, adaptive cruise, power rear window, digital rear mirror, upgraded audio, built in compressor, any bedliner, or the power opening/closing tailgate. You can't add all of those to the GMC but you could add the bedliner, audio, cruise and moonroof. The only option I can think of that the GMC AT4 has that the Toy does not is the availability of the HUD.

TFL just released their head to head drag race between the 24 Tacoma limited iForce and the Colorado HO. The Tacoma was a good bit faster than the 23 Tacoma, but the Colorado just walked away from the 24 Tacoma. Putting around town you likely won't notice much difference but when it comes to passing power and towing the Colorado is going to pull harder. It will be interesting to see how the iForce Max performs against the colorado HO or even the Ranger raptor since they will all be price competitive.

I am debating on telling my dealer to transfer my deposit to a Land Cruiser or GX550 or hold on to the TB. The Colorado has been great, but the TB interior is pretty spartan. I had ordered a Z71, but it never arrived and after seeing it next to the TB I didn't like the Z71 interior and the stance was just not right. I liked the Canyon AT4, but not enough to pay the difference on a 1 year ownership. The interior is that much nicer. If I stick with GM long-term it will be with an upgraded AT4.

Tacoma interior doesn't seem as nice, personally, but much more in line with the Tundra for sure. Own a '21 TRD Off Road now but not sure those Tacoma prices would win me back and the GMC interior seems a much better place to spend time. Have to see how their individual reliability ranks over time. With so many new mid-size remodels sharing the angled look they are very similar (to me) and all the crew-short beds look as if they could come off the same line. Not necessarily a bad thing cuz if looks are comparable then price may be the deciding factor throughout the segment. Competition is always good for buyers, especially in recent years.

In the years since I have owned a T100 and two Tundra's, all three were excellent trucks with exceptional reliability and huge trade-in / resale value when I sold them. Pretty sure the canyon at4 and elevation have the very small digital gauge cluster. It’s one of the weird gripes that people have with it as the entire screen works when turning it on but GM limits it to 1 small section instead 3 sections unless you get the Denali or AT4x. Which is bad for a “luxury” truck as it is a GMC

    • @ArconicWelding

If you're only keeping the canyon for around 3 years, get canyon. But in a long-term ownership of a truck, I mean maybe longer than 10 years. Go tacoma. I'm still driving my 2004 tacoma with 375k miles on it.

And Toyota longevity partly due to never changing a thing for 10 years at a time, so they better get it right keeping everything the same for years on end. They will have there early problems as the full size Toyota does, and then that will be your truck for the new 20 years. 2024 will be the same as a 2034 model😮
