I have been wondering how Duning produced the sparklingly magical background sound behind this theme for years! I would never have guessed that it was done primarily with an organ and a celesta, the latter of which I had never heard of. Thank you, David!!
Well, I hope I'm right! Just going off the collectors series liner notes that shows one percussionist, harp, and organ. That percussionist would have played the celeste. But I might be missing something!
Fantastic job! I grew up with these songs but it was tragic that they were so hard to find to listen to isolated (via CD or mp3). Magical to me that you have the skill to transcribe these ♥ Since we're on this episode, I really love the last bit of "The Voice" when it changes from mystery to worried version of the main theme ... and of course "Kirk's Philosphy"
I've still not got over how much this theme is like Franz Waxman's score from "Suspicion" (1941) - there's a cue in the middle of the film, when Joan Fontaine is writing a letter, that has the exact same melodic content. Not the only time Trek took musical inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock's films of course - Star Trek The Motion Picture famously uses the main theme of "Vertigo"!
When you originally said you were going to do "Metamorphosis" and "Return To Tomorrow" I was half-expecting them to be covered in the same vid, as they're quite similar in some ways, both love stories making heavy use of strings the score, and the main melodic themes are very clearly from the same pen. I'm now anticipating finding out just what the differences were.
@davidpage9355 Thanks for the cool channel! Throughout TOS, I'm always hearing a strong influence from Ravel's "Daphnis Et Chloé." What are your thoughts?
That was a lot of work! Nicely done. I wasn't sure I was hearing the "celevta" (?) in the first few pages, then thought I was during the rest on page 2-4 (as the page reads -- there is no page 3, 5 etc). What was going on there?
Admittedly, a lot of this is guesswork just going off the orchestra personnel listed on the collectors set liner notes. And for sake of visual consolidation I had several parts opted to "hide when empty". So that's why it disappears and reappears. They were measures of rest.
Could you please make this sheet music available as a PDF? I have been trying to learn this piece by ear but am not particularly skilled at picking out chord / key changes. This is my favourite of the TOS romance themes; I especially like the "bass" progression around the midpoint.
Hey Owen. It's a lovely piece, one of Duning's finest. But it is still under copyright, so I don't believe I could "publish" these transcriptions. Plus it's not something I have the bandwidth to take on and there have been several other such requests. My apologies, but thanks for checking it out. Possibly you could do a screen grab and work from that?
Great work, David! A few questions: 1) are you using Sibelius for the transcriptions? 2) are you working entirely by ear, or do you have any access to the scores? and 3) where are the scores? Paramount? Or the various composers' estates?
Very kind, thanks! I'm using MuseScore. I'm too cheap for Sibelius! And yes, I'm working by ear on this one, using the track from the collectors set and just pounding out what I hear. Admittedly there's some things I may have wrong but I think it's pretty close.
As Christine Chapel says at the end of the episode, "It was beautiful."

Remarkable score. Thanks for that, David.

Oh! That was wonderfully done - really captures it.

Beautiful.
I love jarring ear scaping youtube intros before beautiful scores. Thanks
LoL - yeah, maybe that intro was a bit rough. Point made!

"Metamorphosis" used three French horns. "Return..." uses four! 😉

gorgeous work. they never re-used it either, did they?
Hmm I think you're right. Nothing comes to mind, but I'll keep ears open.
