@@fiotux The Adapter Plug on the end was a SN 441011, which is only really used in CH. Meanwhile Germany and Austria are using Typ C (Eurostecker) or Typ F (Schuko). this would also explain why one of the images had French subtext.
@@MegaManNeo I think what happened is that Nintendo called back the units and have them shipped to Japan to discard them, and then someone in Japan got a hold of some of them.
The fact that a Wii Power Brick is what is used to power this is crazy, though not totally unexpected. Nintendo tends to reuse rechargeable batteries for devices like the newer Game & Watch's which use Joycon batteries.
The 2DS at 13:31 is a different kiosk. There are two ways to tell. The first is that if you look very closely you can see the metal braided cable leading away from the 2DS that yours doesn't have. The second is really really obvious if you think about it for a little while 🤣
Every picture has a story to tell. To make a film based on what this 3DS experienced would be fascinating. Who installed it? The people who played it. Plus the day it left the kiosk. It is both heartbreaking, and amazing to think about.
I played the living crap out of these kiosks whenever I was at an electronics store that had them back when I didn't have a 3DS myself... That brings back memories...
Hey Elliot, just wanted to let you know that I used to be near a store that had something similar, and I have the specific software you mentioned "wasn't on there". They were game demos that would lock the 3DS into Play Mode (meaning you couldn't exit to the home menu and you couldn't turn the system off without a certain code of button inputs). If you were to hack that 3DS, I could DM you the files for the Kiosk apps if you'd like, or you can keep that 3DS pure. Either way, just thought I'd tell you that there are special game demos and apps specifically made for these devices. (The one I played back in 2011 had Super Mario 3D as it was called at the time on it. Pretty cool demo)
One thing you could do with the SD card is run a file recovery program like Recuva to maybe recover maybe extra photos and maybe even some files that were exclusive on that display DS.
oh yeah, because maybe there were more pictures and staff of the store would clear them monthly or people who did tests with it on the kiosk deleted them on the spot after seeing the result.
@@SectorfiveYT exactly! That's why people should also not sell their hard drives, SD cards, phones etc. unless the content on storage device was properly deleted(encrypted), luckily there are softwares that can do that for you.
As a collector, i can tell you any kiosk is going to be your prized possession. Especially the 3ds one. Its so well made, looks gorgeous. Hand made, beautiful work.

German Here. This 3DS is from a shop called MediaMarkt which is a big electronics store chain here. I actually saw kiosks like this back in the day. There is also some French text in a few photos and on some labels throughout the Video so i assume it is actually from Switzerland because they have MediaMarkt´s too. A bit weird though is that it advertises the New 3ds XL but has a regular Console attached. The text on the front says: Große Bildschirme (big screens) Verbesserter 3d Effekt (enhanced 3d effect) Erweiterte Steuerung (expanded controls. whatever that means, maybe because of the c stick) Verbesserte CPU (Better CPU) amiibo Support durch NFC Funktion (amiibo support via NFC) All of that points to it being somehow mixed up on its way to Japan.
How fun! I never played on any of the store kiosks, I think I was afraid a store worker would try to sell something to me and I am terribly shy, so I avoided it all. Yay for a fun video!

The first picture of the store you showed reminded me more of Müller, because at a time the gaming section looked identical. Maybe it's possible it was moved from one store to another.
i remember when i was a kid and I went to target and saw one of these, and the luigies mansion demo was amazing especially since I had a dsi at the time.
As a heads-up, when you're rewiring a plug, you should ensure the ground lead (green-yellow) is longer than hot and neutral. That way if the cable is torn out, the hot and neutral will disconnect before the ground.

Aahhhhhh this brings me back some memories! I remember trying a demo 3DS at a Courts in Singapore, that had Steel Diver (one of the launch titles) on it and I don't think the game was ever swapped out. It was set up in the same style of kiosk. At the time, the 3DS didn't have enough titles to win me over, but it was the first time i experienced it in person. Edit: I thought it was at a Popular store, but I think I misremembered and I think it was actually at a Courts store in the city.
Thats the swiss Version of the Small 3DS Kiosk. Ive own the Big Version with a 3DS XL. First it had a 3DS but it broke, Nintendo them send a Guy who replaced the Metal Frame and put a XL in. After 5 years of instore use, my Boss gave the Kiosk and a Wii U Kiosk to me.

hi, I think that that kiosok used to be displayed in a luxembourgish shop. The ads in the ad stands in the 6th to last photo have the same style as our national supermarket "Cactus" ads and all the text in the photos are in french but the DS was set in german which are the 2 main languages we use here in luxembourg.

Ultimately the manufacturer of the item, in your case nintendo, would contact a 3rd party company that makes shop displays, explaining what they wanted functionality wise, this company would make a display module to the specifications required, then a 4th party would be employed to go and do the shop displays and set up. Iv been involved with the 3rd and 4th party company's before & also done exhibition displays but unfortunately nothing as exciting as nintendo. Mainly home security systems. So Ultimately its almost home made one offs (made in dozens or maybe hundreds in the case of nintendo) to look pretty on the shelf to encourage customers to buy the product. P.S. we've also updated previous display modules, ie, was selling 1080i models updated to display 4k models.

The wires in your plug need to be all slightly different lengths. This is a safety feature of a British plug. The Earth is the longest, then Neutral then the shortest would be Live. The reason for this is so if the wire was pulled on hard enough for the wires to pull out, it would pull live out 1st leaving earth until last
You have no clue how much i want a WiiU Kiosk lol. Its one of the most interesting Kiosk systems imo, it had a Menu very different from the actual WiiU (with you scrolling through the artworks of the games) and the games were modified so you could only play for so long (but it would still save; i plaied a bit Mario Maker on one and levels from previous users were still on there) It was very interesting for sure and i really wanna try it again tbh

I saw a few of the Switch Lite kiosks at PAX West a few years ago, they had three out on display for the main colors a few weeks before the Switch Lite was released.
I actually used some of these here in germany. Saturn had Pilotwings at launch, Mario 3D Land a little bit later and the local "Real" store had two units with Mario Kart 7. Saturn had a small blue one, Real had a small blue and one grey XL iirc. Your unit is pretty interesting. Seems like it was first used in france and then moved to germany. The kiosk is authentic. They all started out with the 3DS branding and got the "New 3DS" sides etc. as time went by. They somehow managed to replace them.
Kiosks, other promotional items and dev hardware usually have to be returned to Nintendo when they are no longer used. The state probably went to NoE which is based in Germany and then from there to Nintendo in Japan for disposal. Apparently it somehow ended up in an auction there btw. The store in the pictures is a Media Markt, which is a fairly large electronic "specialist" chain of stores in Germany
Very cool video, this model 3DS kiosk is one I don't own yet and have been looking for for a while. I've seen pictures online of this model with either the braided cable or the metal wrapped cable, though I'm not sure how the connection works for the braided one since I'd never seen detail pictures of it before. Considering your kiosk only has one lock, I'm not assuming the lock in it is still original, but if it works it works! Also about the photo on the SD card of the 2DS kiosk console in the bracket, that picture is actually of a big 3DS kiosk like the one you showed at the end of the video, the one you showed actually also has the 2DS bracket on the left side of it! Very nice. As for the base, I have typically seen these with a bigger metal plate on the bottom, but they were usually mounded to a counter, which is why it might look like it's unsteady like this. My 3DS kiosk consoles also mostly came with pictures from the stores they were used in, it's a lot of fun being able to see its history like that, and because the 3DS sorts pictures by year, you can even pinpoint when it was in use!
I know for sure it does exist a floor unit without the top part… here in Italy was primarily used in gaming fairs. I played on one of these from back in the day, I can say that the base for the 3DS is magnetic, and combined with the bracket to put on the console itself, it stays in place, but you can also detach it from the main unit. Games that ran on these kiosk units were stripped down versions with a software lock on the home button, and also text like: “Evita di tirare con forza il cavo che collega la console Nintendo 3DS allo stand”, which means “Avoid pulling hard on the cable connecting the Nintendo 3DS console to the stand”.

As a child in Germany I remember going to a store called Müller and hoping that nobody was playing on the 3DS. There was a special version of the Resorts game and I loved it... The kiosk looks just like the one I played on, very cool!
2:50 Japanese Auctions do be like that sometimes... I managed to get two of the latest NVIDIA Shield Portable Prototypes from a pile of untested electronics despite the fact that the Shield Portable was never released in Japan or allowed for import (due to strict Radio Act laws). I set one of them up and it was painful to get it working but it's an excellent device! Runs the android TV OS rather than the regular one so there are some features missing that the original device would have had (touchscreen, camera, etc). It's great for streaming PC games though!

Most powered actors are actually compatible with the more popular country standards, one easy one if it's a 12 volt power supply and says 120 to 240 it means that you can just plug it in anywhere in America and Europe and everywhere else that shares their standards

I think that LED strip is dim since it's quite old. From experience, the early batches generally used a clear rubber epoxy which degrades and turns yellow-brown with use, age and sun damage. That tends to block a significant amount of light.

Well when you have a surplus of wii power bricks, it'd be cheaper to just use those
5v LED strips also generate more heat than a 12v set. Its possible that they factored this in

I saw a few of the Switch Lite kiosks at PAX West a few years ago, they had three out on display for the main colors a few weeks before the Switch Lite was released.

The store it was in is a mediamarkt i live in the netherlands and it is one of the biggest tech stores here.

I actually used some of these here in germany. Saturn had Pilotwings at launch, Mario 3D Land a little bit later and the local "Real" store had two units with Mario Kart 7.
Saturn had a small blue one, Real had a small blue and one grey XL iirc.
Your unit is pretty interesting. Seems like it was first used in france and then moved to germany. The kiosk is authentic.
They all started out with the 3DS branding and got the "New 3DS" sides etc. as time went by. They somehow managed to replace them.

Kiosks, other promotional items and dev hardware usually have to be returned to Nintendo when they are no longer used.
The state probably went to NoE which is based in Germany and then from there to Nintendo in Japan for disposal.
Apparently it somehow ended up in an auction there

The store in the pictures is a Media Markt, which is a fairly large electronic "specialist" chain of stores in Germany
Very cool video, this model 3DS kiosk is one I don't own yet and have been looking for for a while. I've seen pictures online of this model with either the braided cable or the metal wrapped cable, though I'm not sure how the connection works for the braided one since I'd never seen detail pictures of it before.
Considering your kiosk only has one lock, I'm not assuming the lock in it is still original, but if it works it works!
Also about the photo on the SD card of the 2DS kiosk console in the bracket, that picture is actually of a big 3DS kiosk like the one you showed at the end of the video, the one you showed actually also has the 2DS bracket on the left side of it! Very nice.
As for the base, I have typically seen these with a bigger metal plate on the bottom, but they were usually mounded to a counter, which is why it might look like it's unsteady like this.
My 3DS kiosk consoles also mostly came with pictures from the stores they were used in, it's a lot of fun being able to see its history like that, and because the 3DS sorts pictures by year, you can even pinpoint when it was in use!
I know for sure it does exist a floor unit without the top part… here in Italy was primarily used in gaming fairs.
I played on one of these from back in the day, I can say that the base for the 3DS is magnetic, and combined with the bracket to put on the console itself, it stays in place, but you can also detach it from the main unit.
Games that ran on these kiosk units were stripped down versions with a software lock on the home button, and also text like: “Evita di tirare con forza il cavo che collega la console Nintendo 3DS allo stand”, which means “Avoid pulling hard on the cable connecting the Nintendo 3DS console to the stand”.

As a child in Germany I remember going to a store called Müller and hoping that nobody was playing on the 3DS. There was a special version of the Resorts game and I loved it... The kiosk looks just like the one I played on, very cool!
You must keep the ground wire longer, if the wire is pulled out of the plug, the ground wire still stays in the plug, please please change it

2:50 Japanese Auctions do be like that sometimes... I managed to get two of the latest NVIDIA Shield Portable Prototypes from a pile of untested electronics despite the fact that the Shield Portable was never released in Japan or allowed for import (due to strict Radio Act laws). I set one of them up and it was painful to get it working but it's an excellent device! Runs the android TV OS rather than the regular one so there are some features missing that the original device would have had (touchscreen, camera, etc). It's great for streaming PC games though!

Most powered actors are actually compatible with the more popular country standards, one easy one if it's a 12 volt power supply and says 120 to 240 it means that you can just plug it in anywhere in America and Europe and everywhere else that shares their standards

I think that LED strip is dim since it's quite old. From experience, the early batches generally used a clear rubber epoxy which degrades and turns yellow-brown with use, age and sun damage. That tends to block a significant amount of light.
