  • Goalkeeper Peter Shilton equals Bobby Moore's record of 108 England caps as England record an excellent 3-0 win over Poland at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier in June 1989. It is Poland's first visit to Wembley since stopping England qualifying for the 1974 finals. But goals from Gary Lineker, John Barnes and Neil Webb ensure it is England smiling this time, repeating the score by which they beat Poland at the 1986 finals in Mexico. Includes interviews with Lineker and Bobby Robson.

    It is easy to forget what a good player Gary Lineker was , he wasn't just a goal scorer he could lay of the ball , run into space , drag defenders out of position ,

    • @melanies9798

      +John Ruby His pure positional instinct was incredible. His 'open play' is criticised because he doesn't actually do much on the ball, but to call him lazy as some have is totally untrue. He simply knew his role and knew how to keep it devestatingly simple. Just be where you are supposed to be. He got so many goals simply by standing in the correct place. Instinct.

      What rubbish Lineker was an average player ..not even in the first fifty ..he was an opportunist kind of player only thinking about himself apart from Bryan Robson or Peter Beardsley..Webb and Hateley were superb .. Barnes not really in form.. England were not that good team and Bobby Robson did not do enough research but expected too much from a over rated team..our football strategy was far behind from Brazil France Argentina Germany and Italy

      @@darrylfernandes4806 The key to Lineker that not many realise was he was one of the fastest players ever over about 10 to 30 yards. Howard Kendall makes this point. Which is exactly what you need as an on the shoulder number 9. Any kind of half decent run put him into space beyond a defender. He could finish too. And had his fair share of luck

      @@darrylfernandes4806You don't really understand much about football, dude. Lineker is easily one of the best strikers England have ever had. He was in the team to score goals and he did it in bucket loads. More importantly, he did it on the big occasions. He scored way more goals than Hateley (who can't even be talked about in the same breath) and comparisons with midfielders are trite, they're in the team to do different things. Your mentions of Bobby Robson are a straw man argument, this is a discussion about Lineker who was a quality striker who knew how to be in the right place at the right time and score goals. You really can't ask more of someone who is picked up front.
      In my long time of watching England play football, until Kane, no-one was as good as Lineker. Shearer and Owen shone for a short time, Rooney woeful on the big stage, Keegan never even got to be on the biggest stage save a few minutes at the end of a Spain game.

    The game wasn't shown live on TV. I remember listening to game on the radio. It was tense, Poland had some good chances. You have to remember that England were still recovering from a disastrous Euro '88. The team, and especially Sir Bobby had been slaughtered by the press. After only getting a draw against Sweden in the opening group game, we'd racked up back-to-back wins against Albania. This was the key game with the remaining two fixtures away to Sweden and Poland. It was a must-win game and thankfully we did just that. Lineker had a great game and really led the line. Barnes, Waddle and Beardsley providing the flair. Robson and Butcher the leadership. Neil Webb had a great game too and deserved his goal. I always liked Webb. He eventually lost his England place to a certain mr Gascoigne but he never had bad game for England in my opinion. I used to have this on VHS but lost it when we moved house. Good to watch it again. Happy days......

      After Euro 88 (when England had the group from hell...it had the two finalists in the tournament in it and the Irish were very lucky to beat England, England did not lose a competitive match until the final friendly with Uruguay in 1990 before the World Cup '90' and only lost the third place playoff against Italy...a basically irrelavnt match, England were a top ten team back then...

    • @leebush4053
      @leebush4053 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      England's press billed us as tournament favourites in 88. They completely under estimated the Dutch and the USSR. As for the Irish team you need to understand they were far from lucky in beating England. Look at the team and you'll see it was full of level 1st division players. The issue was they were supposed English and Scottish rejects. The Irish midfield was Whelan, Sheedy and Houghton. Up front they had Aldridge. At centre back they had Paul McGrath who was better than any of his English counterparts. You may now see why the Irish beat England. Bobby Robson scapegoated Tony Adams after Van Basten destroyed him. We wasn't good enough and got caught out. Italia 90 was better. Mediocre in the group stages. Out played by Belgium and rode our luck against Cameroon in the belief it's be a 3 0 walk over. Against Germany we were the better team. our luck ran out sadly. England were a good top 6/8 team. no more than that.

    • @kailashpatel1706
      @kailashpatel1706 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In 1990 they played Holland (European champions at the time and played them off the park and should have won by 3 goals, Lineker especially guilty of missed chances and a goal at the end by Pearce disallowed..yep all the group matches were dire but against Belgium, a legit goal by John Barnes was ruled out..I think if you think the Irish were the better team in 1988 you have a different memory then me..They made two chances, one of which they scored from and the other Whelan hit the bar, England had half a dozen if not more chances...Terry Butcher had been injured in the lead to Euro 88 and the defensive line lacked the experience of the 1990 team...also recall Bryan Robson was ruled out after the group stages of '90' which made England not as robust in that critical area for those matches..A loss that they could not recover from no matter how well David Platt played in his place..

      1988 Barnes/Beardsley totally exhausted after brilliant domestic season. Lineker was ill with what turned out to be Hepatitis. Ireland match was a grind, Holland could have been 1-1 two late goals made it look worse than it was. Game against USSR lot of changes. That was the day Sir Bobby Robson said 'that team died that day". Dead wood cast away, Platt and Gascoigne waiting in the wings. We weren't that bad.

      Barnes was an excellent player. Had he played the full game against Argentina, instead of the last twenty minutes or so, England would have reached the semis. He was floating past the Argentines and crossing when he came on. Another thing to look at - the aesthetics....players looked smart with all wearing black boots and jerseys worn inside the trousers, mostly. Compare that to today's footballers - tattoos, strange hairstyles, white, yellow, pink, red shoes, jerseys hanging out, etc.....and now you'll understand why I love the game in the old days so much more.

    Exactly how England should always play - Built around a powerful spine and a generally direct and physical style but also with flair and the emphasis on fast attacks not ball retention. Play your skill players and get the ball forward to them. Cross it. Use power and direct running in midfield, don't try and over complicate it there. But also don't play long ball.
    But also helps when you have the likes of Barnes and Waddle, both near peak here and fairly unplayable. You could vaguely throw the ball up to them and they both had the power, skill and confidence to get it down and dance about. Do England have players of that gravity now? Pretty much no. A lot of academy brainwashed guff. Thank god for weridos like Delli Alli and Vardy, yes both may be uncouth but they have balls and flair and we need that.

      I disagree completely. That Northern European style of play worked in this era but won’t now. In many ways International football is a different sport. Much more cautious and oriented around ball possessions to attack and defend WITH the ball. Plus it’s hard to use an uptempo style after a gruelling season in hot summer tournaments. We need to evolve our style much like Germany have. We’re not Spain and never will be. But that’s not the plan. But we need to control games with possession better. Hopefully Mount and Fidel will help facilitate this. The thing we forget is the kids today didn’t grow up watching Robson and Ball play (I.e off the ball runners), even Gerard or Lampard. They grow up watching an iteration of Pep football. I’m very excited by the midfielders we’re producing now. We still have Alli, Bellingham etc. But now there’s guys like Smith-Rowe, Eze, Foden, Curtis Jones. Different players to the Gerard, Lampard, Hargreaves, Barry, Parker generation.
