    You can see an updated model in my newer video:

    There's a couple things about your scuttlebug in-game that make it look very uncanny and... not cute.
    Its limbs are spread outwards rather than back in towards the body, making it look bigger, though this is something that would be solved with animations. Another thing about the limbs (that might just be because of the scale) is how being able to see their textures better makes them look thick and hairy, while I've always seen the og scuttlebug's limbs as smooth cartoony sticks.
    The eyeballs might also be a bit on the small size, even though the pupils are properly sized in comparison to the body. I honestly wanna give the modeled eyes a chance, so if you could increase their size without blowing up the texture, that'd be great.

    I see the point of polygonal eyes over cardboard ones, but they look too blocky right now (especially with the smoother body). ...here's an idea: simplify the fangs (maybe even make a non-rotating cardboard of it?), and use the extra triangles on the eyes?
    Also, the sclera now look too small, making the irises too big (which I assume are still in the original size, but look bigger due to proportion). Have you tried making the eyes bigger?

      @jan_h ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@UltraNyan No, those 3D eyes also have textures on them. He gives the reason as „it saves on a few transformation matrices“ in the video. I've always thought of billboards as being less intensive than any 3D model, so having them be less efficient in this case surprised me.

    • @This-Was-Sparta
      @This-Was-Sparta ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Kind of surprised me too, yeah. I guess it only starts winning out when going past a certain size. If it's only a couple polygons you're replacing with a billboard the polygon approach wins out. But when you scale that up to double or triple digit polygons billboards start winning out in terms of performance.
      I suppose it's like how some games render building interiors behind windows using shaders. If you only have 5 rooms to render it's more efficient to just create a simple room for each of them in 3D space, but if you scale that up to a couple skyscrapers worth of rooms, the shader approach becomes much more efficient.

    If I had to guess, the double bones are an attempt to fix gimbal lock in the 3D software at the time. Gimbal lock can cause all sorts of rotational issues if not properly interpolated when exporting, and I'm guessing early 90s 3D software did not handle it well (hell current 3D software doesn't always handle it well). So the artists got around it using 2 bones, one only rotates pitch and yaw, and the other only roll. It's not the most efficient solution, but it beats the legs constantly flipping 180 degrees when animating, plus with tight deadlines you sometimes have to adopt a "good enough" solution, rather than finding the "optimal" solution.

    • @KazeClips
      @KazeClips  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they only animate one of the bones. the other bone always has a static rotation that gets recalculated every frame,... unfortunately this bone does nothing other than add a consistent rotation forever

      @@KazeClips I think that's the problem, while legs it has the same length as the original, the knee cap are not, so it's shorten the leg, and it looks even shorter while in movement.
      I think you should add more length to the leg until it fits the point where was located the old kneecap, then while deform it will have the original leg size.
      The new eyes looks cool tho, but the iris indeed are too big compared to the sclera. And also maybe some others doesn't like the new eyes because it doesn't have relation to the body which is a billboard.
      I think if the body was also made with tris there could not be problems because of consistency. But if you use billoboard for a round part like the body it should also applied to other rounds parts like the eyes.

    tbh, I think the "why not" has a good answer. So many games go through this phase where the scope creep of passionate remasterers starts to turn them into remakers. But they end up in a very weird space where they are creating little miracles in limited environment rather than creating big miracles in a modern environment. I write music and sometimes I go back to my old pieces and try to upgrade the VSTs to better libraries, but when I do I realize how much I could add instrumentation, improve the harmony, even write new sections!... and then the intended effort skyrockets and I polish a mediocre piece to death rather than put the same effort into making something more in line with wherever my skills are at the time. Not that it isn't a labour of love. Another time I refurbished an old bookshelf, probably about $15 of lumber, spending maybe 15 hours on getting it just how I wanted, and now I love having this beautiful object around. But I could probably have made an even better one in that same amount of time if I wasn't trying to merge the idea of creation with the idea of restoration.

    I do not like at all how the eyes and pincer things clearly stick out of the ball. if you made them suddenly end rather than taper off I would have no problems, as it would look like a cartoonish art style rather than simply wrong (maybe even have the eyes be perfectly flat and clearly not on the ball if you look from anything from straight on)
    But idk as ultimately I have never worked on modeling or even really art in general

    Very specific and interesting. In Mario 64, do the meshes generally have multiple bone weights per vertex? I always assumed that the models used hierarchical animation, essentially with one bone per piece of the model. If that were true, it could explain the redundant bones and geometry. I never looked deeply into the game, so I could be way off.

    That means the scuttlebug jamboree is gonna load so much faster!!

      It doesn't really affect loading times as much as it does affect performance during gameplay

    Man SHAMES scuttlebug for 'having too many bones' before using EUGENICS and INHUMANE SCIENCE to engineer a bobugculus in his basement. Truly the most _twisted_ member of our generation.

    I can answer why this Scuttlebug has 50 bones. But to answer that we need to talk about parallel universes.

    Won't lie, Scuttlebugs have always terrified me due to my aracniphobia. His NSMB2 redesign I'm fine with as he's been chibified in a way so he looks less like an actual spider. His older looks on the other hand. . .bleh. Those big creepy bug eyes, skinny limbs, way too spider like. Your new model of him looks a bit less terrifying, but still unnerving.
