He plays the piano parte better than any other...and at the same time is conducting much better than any other Conductor.... On the other hand, this incredible jazzistic music works at this Tempo. And It is sad when you see the others (conductors) always in troubles..., struggling ..., even at much slower tempos (just because they cannot). This video is the ultimate proof that Music Needs Geniuses.
This style of music with it's intensity, boys and girls, is the true foundation of rock and roll, as it pre-dates Robert Johnson and the blues, Hank Williams, etc. Rock on Leonard!!
The greatest, vosni was into both the clasdixal, jazz, rock styles etc. Which all the others i am afraid to say were not, so he had an advantage understanding both feelings
No se puede creer... Maravilloso. Enorme composición de Ravel; gran ejecución y dirección (para mí, la mejor) de Bernstein. Se juntaron la alegría de vivir con otra alegría de vivir.
@chamade16 True! Some pieces are about fun. And thats exactly what you get from this! Some people play things too fast just to show off, but with Bernstein you can tell he's just having the time of his life!
I sometimes see pianists(or conductors) playing the piano and conducting at the same time on piano concerto of Mozart or Beethoven, but I rarely see other composers like this. Why?
Plainly, because it's easier to play conduct a concerto by Mozart or Beethoven as opposed to a concerto like the Ravel for multiple reasons. One of them being that the form is very distinct in a concerto by someone like Mozart or Beethoven, so the Pianist has distinct spots to look up and conduct as opposed to a more modern concerto, in which breaks in playing are sparse and often don't coincide with difficult orchestral parts unlike your traditional classical concerto. In a Mozart or Beethoven piano concerto, the orchestral parts are relatively easy, so the orchestra is much closer to conducting itself than if they were accompanying a more difficult piano concerto (for the orchestra, by no means are the Beethoven piano concertos and some Mozart piano concertos easier to play than more modern concertos). Another thing is in more modern piano concertos (The Ravel is a perfect example), the meter changes quite a bit, which is one of the advantages of having a conductor conduct an orchestra. Sometimes these meter changes happen when the pianist/conductor is playing, so it takes an immense amount of coordination to get properly, and it would be very difficult to multitask when playing a concerto of this technical caliber.
I thought this 3rd movement was very hard to play but once I tried, it was not that difficult than I thought. Maybe the 1st and 2nd movements are more difficult.
Once all your technical challenges are mastered, yes I suspect the second movement will your final cliff to climb. Take it to yourself as a lover, not so much as a challenge
Bernstein, you are my GOD. Please, compare this version with that by Larrocha-Lopez Cobos (with Cincinatti, also on youtube). You will understand the difference between to be a decent music maker or to be an ARTIST. That's all.
I love this simply because it is SO wrong! No one would have the balls to play it that fast these days. It's frantic, splashy, littered with mistakes and the orchestra is constantly playing catch up, but it's such fun!
@whneo97 you made me laugh so hard, i almost had to pee... check up on the dates of ravel's birth and death! and then check the date of this recording!
there's an obvious problem with that video, everything goes too fast, not only while performing but also when he rises in front of the public. No one can discut the tempo here as the recording is very bad!!

I knew Bernstein could play, but WOW!
In my opinion, it takes a true genious to conduct and play perfectly at the same time.
It's multi-tasking to the extreme!
Amazing!!!
as if simply doing one of the parts on their own wasn't multitasking enough

When Leonard Bernstein sees Presto, he really thinks presto, doesn't he? XD
A performance for the ages!
this is not playing music, this is living music!
This is the VERY best performance of this concerto full of fire and energy. Leonard Bernstein is amazing.
Out of this world ❣
That is just...wow...energy!!
Une interprétation "so crazy", à l'image de Lenny. Un régal ! Vraiment génial !
He was one of th greatest conductor of the XXth century.
And not a bad pianist, either :)
The greatest, vosni was into both the clasdixal, jazz, rock styles etc. Which all the others i am afraid to say were not, so he had an advantage understanding both feelings
Bernstein looks like he’s having a blast.
Unrivaled performance!
What an opportunity to say 'unraveled', only to miss it
Juste extraordinaire, le meilleur.
Legendary interpretation!!!
1:10
Ravel is playing the horn!
i love how he just jumps and stabs all over the keys with his left hand. its fantastic. he's so spirited
Outstanding performance! I love it!
Fantastic performance !!!!
Wonderful!!!!!!
No se puede creer... Maravilloso. Enorme composición de Ravel; gran ejecución y dirección (para mí, la mejor) de Bernstein. Se juntaron la alegría de vivir con otra alegría de vivir.
Unfuckingbelievable ...
There is no one who can fill this man's shoes...........BRILLANT, love his nose
All courage and humility! LOVE so much.
spectacular!!
Ah, the poor bassonist. That TEMPO!
best ever performance
Astonishing! OMG.
Especially this 3rd movement played by L.burnstein reminds me of BGM in Animation Tom & Jerry
I love the last "bam".
@chamade16

Ravel would've been proud, never knew his piece could be worn so well by an American
Yeah, there's more to the USA than cowboy hats and orange racists.
He adored American talent
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Amazing!!!!!!!!! Incredible!!!!!!!!

I can only compare this to martha argerich's freedom, joy and reckless abandonment within total control. Bravo maestro!
La alegría de vivir...
Wild!

that was fucking nuts
the best perfomance together with martha argerich.just that
es una verga Bernstein. Sin palabras, me encantaaaa
I love this simply because it is SO wrong! No one would have the balls to play it that fast these days. It's frantic, splashy, littered with mistakes and the orchestra is constantly playing catch up, but it's such fun!
@chamade16 Agree about the catchup, and Lenny's contribution has probably literally 5,000 blue notes in it.
@chamade16 you can't really be mad at him... playing the piano and conducting the orchestra at the same time... kinda tough
Non avendo il CD che ne è stato tratto no so dire con certezza, ma dovrebbe essere stato registrato alla fine degli anni '70.
perfecto....
that bassoonist is like "i hate my life" hahah such a hard excerpt but i love this version!
We always feel that way.
@balletlad yeah!!
this is badass! love the wrong notes :)
wow
goodness, is that horn player sergiu celibidache??????? it's just identical!!!
압도적이다.
Yeah, he looks like Ravel xDD
Do any other piano players who watch from 1:52 just go...

Damnnnnnn.....
Utterly delicious!!!
Ma come si fa a suonare e a dirigere il concerto di Ravel???
strabiliante, davvero stupefacente.
hahahaha mov III its sooo funny, and he looks like a cat in 3:40
What orchestra is that?
@honron21 Even there isn't alot of wronge notes ^^
@Cumul0Nimbus
Oh my god ! :-O
@Cumul0Nimbus Is it really ravel? O_O
Who knows, maybe that's exactly what Ravel wanted ;-)
Ravel is playing French horn???
wow brett "kevin dixon" wilcots
Peace
@whneo97 you made me laugh so hard, i almost had to pee... check up on the dates of ravel's birth and death! and then check the date of this recording!
Ravel: joie de vivre!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I felt this is too fast after I saw another performance.
I guess that would be an opinion?
Practicando
That poor, poor bassoon @ 2:04....=(
there's an obvious problem with that video, everything goes too fast, not only while performing but also when he rises in front of the public. No one can discut the tempo here as the recording is very bad!!
taa brioszki
I can do THAT :D
Hmm! Not all conductors should try to be serious pianists. I guess.
Berstien is/was a great conductor.
omgg what is this! hahahah
Uselsss tempo
he was not a great conductor, and not half that much a pianist
Says you, who probably couldn't make music at this level in 1000 years.
@@composerguy1437SHAME ON YOU for responding and giving this person EXACTLY what he or she wanted….attention!
