Great movie I watched old yeller many times when I was a kid. I always hated how he died but I still love this movie. I wish they would play it on antenna tv instead of playing the same stuff on every channel everyday.

I was sad when Travis felt that Old Yeller had to be shot after getting hydrophoby from a wolf fight where the mom said "there's no hope for him now Travis, he's suffering and you know we have to do it" where Travis knew it had to be done and probably felt that they can't keep Old Yeller locked inside that corncrib forever knowing that soon he will break out and plus, Arliss almost released him which would have gotten Arliss hydrophoby if Old Yeller bit him.
It was only because his older brother always told him.what to do and when. In Arliss's mind it was "you ain't mama or papa Travis, so I d ok nt have to listen to you." Plus the dog was a playmate of Arlis. And in the novel Travis had a dog 'Ol Belle when he was younger, and the dog saved him from a rattler. But the dog got to curious after the snake was killed and the snake's death reflex had it bite Belle on the snout and she died.

Travis might not be his parent, but he is older and a contributing member of the family. Furthermore Travis is put in charge when their father leaves. In other scenes he throws rocks at Travis, and Mr. Sanderson. Even when his mom scolds him he's completely defiant. He gets in his moms way while she's trying to treat Travis and Old Yeller. It's normal level of bratiness for a kid his age, but that doesn't change the fact that that is is bratiness ... "The dog was a playmate of Arlis" this is a joke right? It's been awhile since I've read the book, but we're talking about the movie. This is literally the first time Arlis ever sees this dog, who could have just as easily bit his face off when he came close.

Tommy Kirk and Kevin Cochran did about four Disney movies together as brothers. they did Swiss family Robinson, The shaggy dog, Old Yeller and Savage Sam. In Swiss family Robinson there was another older brother but that actor is not in Old Yeller the mother was also in Swiss family Robinson
Yeah, for a while it looked like you couldn't see Tommy Kirk without seeing Kevin Corcoran as his younger brother. Only within the last ten or so years did I finally see the Flubber and Merlin Jones movies. In "Babes in Toyland", they sort of met halfway. Tommy and Kevin were both in it, but they didn't play brothers.

Lucky to Arliss's complaining and physical attacking, Burn Sanderson made a deal with Arliss to let the family keep Old Yeller.
Why was the mother getting after Arliss here? Travis was the one trying to hit Yeller, Arliss was just protecting him. Same thing with the rock fight. Travis started that, yet Arliss was the one who got scolded. Even if Travis got blessed out for that, she still got after Arliss more. Does the mother just hate Arliss?
is this- a serious question? It's a random dog. This dog stole their food. Despite mom saying 'you can get us a deer ' like it's nothing, there's no guaranty he will actually find anything to hunt. The dog stealing that food is actually a big deal, which is why later in the film there's a very real fear from Elizabeth that the dog would be shot over stealing corn bread (far less valuable than a side of meat ) and eggs. It is also why Travis' mother is concerned about it getting back to them when he tells her about it (ie that the other folk will seek to hold them accountable even though the dog was stealing before he was theirs). ... Additionally, little real life lesson here. Roving dogs are a danger to other animals. They can spread disease, and will often maim/kill other animals, including if their neighbors have working dogs, the wild life they rely on to supplement the meat they raise, the hogs they mark, the calves (the grown cattle themselves if the pack is big enough), and any horses or mules (though there's a good chance the mule will hold his own). The mule is essential to helping their family work the field so they can grown corn for the winter. They don't, in fact' know this dog isn't dangerous when Travis is about to drive him off. Even if he wasn't willing to attack them (another distinct possibility, humans are more likely to be killed by feral dogs than by wolves), the damage he could do by simply being a dog at large could hurt their chances of surviving the winter.

For example, on the second film titled, "Savage Sam", both parents were gone for a few months and Travis and Arliss were the only two brothers together at home.
When I first saw this movie with my family I thought Travis was being a little unfair. Like the mother said: Arliss needed somebody to play with and Travis was too big for him. Now I kind of understand his point: Papa had left Travis to be the man of the family while he was away. Travis did not want any stray dog interfering.

However, I guess the only reasons he started having love towards Old Yeller either because, he appreciated how Old Yeller didn't take a bite out of the deer meat Travis cut up, or he loved what a great fish catcher Old Yeller was, or he appreciated how Old Yeller rescued Arliss from a bear.
In a way I think Travis was being unfair. On the other hand ever since I saw this movie with my family for the first time years ago on VHS i was able to see his perspective. The father left Travis to be the man of the family while he was away. Travis did not want any interference.

Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran were both fantastic in Old Yeller! Forever remembered.
They also played brothers in another Disney movie ironically having to do with a dog, "The Shaggy Dog."
