I like this a lot because he's not telling him to just move on or get over it. He's saying to let himself feel the hurt that comes from things like that, but not to lose himself over it and never let himself be happy again. Take the good with the bad. Really healthy advice compared to some of the mentalities people had at the time.

Considering the time period, it was a perfect speech to give to his son. Back then, there weren’t a lot of time for talking about emotions. Things needed to be done or you didn’t survive. The fact that his father took the time to assess and acknowledge his feelings in a thoughtful and concise way speaks to his worth as a good father.

People lose dogs all the time and it's hard and it hurts. I've lost quite a few dogs in my life but then I would get a new one and start over. It makes me feel better but it doesn't make me forget the previous dogs as it shouldn't. But like Travis's father says, losing someone you care about is part of life. Life isn't always easy or fair.

the father in old yeller, Atticus in to kill a mockingbird, and mufasa in The Lion King are in my opinion three of the best fathers in cinima.
in to kill a mockingbird Atticus says to his son, "there are a lot of ugly things in this world son, I wish I can protect you from all of them but that's never possible."
in The Lion King mufasa says to his son," being brave doesn't mean you go looking for trouble."

I searched for this scene because I remembered Travis's father getting him the horse and acknowledging that his son wasn't in a place where he could appreciate it and letting that be ok. I appreciated that and wanted to hear the rest. I like how his Dad doesn't have the answer, he sort of fumbles through what he knows to give Travis advice and even backs off his initial assertion that Travis should just forget. He gives him the advice that you can't waist your life anticipating bad things and mourning then lets his son have the time he needs to grieve and make that shift. He just sits with him and says he knows. His advice paired with his patience and the space he gives him is really wholesome and helpful.

Ricco It was so very well done. Anybody who has ever suffered a tragic loss can clearly see how deeply Travis is grieving...especially dog owners. To many, the death of a dog hits harder than the loss of a human. The father here understands that and shares compassion, understanding, and wisdom.

When Duffy, Mom's Westie died years ago, I was with her when she went out to the same kennel to get another one afterwards. As we stood in front of a gate with maybe a half dozen Westie pups on the other side- THERE HE WAS- Duffy! The very SAME dog. Being a seer I was absolutely SURE of it. That was him all right. She picked out another. I wasn't sure if she had seen him and I didn't say anything, though I wished later I had. She might've thought I was crazy, and I feared her scorn at the thought, but maybe she just didn't see. She really really loved Duffy and took his loss hard, but had talked about how his ears were too floppy for a show dog or something, and she chose a heavier dogs with ears that stood up. But THERE HE WAS- at the same kennel she'd gotten him before. It made sense to me. God is good, and not the punisher people who want to make God in THEIR image like to think.

How come Old Yeller gets a proper burial when Old Rose (who died of the same illness) had to get burned up?

She would be scavenged on and spread the disease. Plus much easier to bury a dog where body cannot be gotten to considering cows and bulls can weight 2000 pounds or more

Rose was considered livestock and Yeller was part of the family.

That plus she was sick with hydrophobia. They needed to burn the carcass to prevent the disease from spreading.

Yeller was never Travis's dog. Travis not only killed Yeller, but he caused Yeller to be killed. He then tries to steal claim Arliss other dog who he didn't even want and tossed him aside. Travis is the older brother in the story of the prodigal son jealous and spiteful of his younger brother who is the "Chief"

Sounds similar to the Abe Lincoln quote from Pollyanna. No knocking but good advice is still good advice thank you, TH-cam Algorithms, TH-cam Uploader and Disney.
