This is both a sad and terrifying scene. It just goes to show how scary the dreaded rabies virus really is. It turns even the friendliest animals into mindless rage filled monsters.

I’m Australian, and this is why we were all so upset with Johnny Depp after smuggling his two dogs into the country, and then calling the government idiotic out when he got caught and got in trouble. We are very lucky that we don’t have some of these horrible diseases (such as rabies) in our country. Why on earth would it be okay that he risked our entire wildlife and ecosystem by potentially bringing these sorts of diseases in?

Jesse couldn't stand the fact that Walter killed Jesse's only true friend and lied about it telling him that Mike was "out there". Also, Jesse was fine with the money he made in the meth business and seeing what Walt had become into, well, you got the answer.

Then he saved the family from a wolf, but the family thought he could have gotten rabies from fighting the wolf, so they locked him away in that shed for, correct me if I'm wrong, a month. A month later, the dog turned into that. And since there was no cure at the time, the older boy had to end him.

@@rexman971 Wrong. Rabies has an incubation period of 8 weeks to 1-5 years. You and an animal who’s been bitten by a rabid animal can literally live life for a year or so without any symptoms until the incubation cycle breaks. It is a prions disease you should look up what a prions disease is then you’ll understand. Because that is what rabies is it’s very similar to mad cow and scrapies which is a form of rabies in sheep and chronic wasting disease in deer elk and moose. Losing a pet is one thing, but to lose them to rabies is a whole other feeling of devastation.

@QueenMadusa Madusa That was very confusing how Travis claimed Yeller as his best friend because he hated Yeller at first but probably only started loving him because he obeyed Travis not to eat the deer or because he appreciated that Yeller saved Arliss from a bear. But yes, Arliss is very naughty to try to secretly release Yeller especially when Travis told him in a threatening way to stay away from Yeller. However, it was mostly the mom's fault for not keeping a close watch on Arliss by putting him to bed herself.

All the signs of rabies were there. Not eating due to inability to swallow (hydrophobia). Hypersensitivity to stimuli: the presence of the rest of the family further agitated Yeller. Arliss wasn't the only one who couldn't wrap his head around the situation. At first, Travis couldn't take in this situation either.

The way when Travis enter the small house where Yeller is in, when the rabies is started in Yeller, you can see Yeller didn’t attack Travis, he was probably growling at him, telling him, “leave go, before I become a monster, I don’t want to hurt you”. When the little kid tried to loose Yeller, the rabies kicked in and tried to attack him.

Whoa, im 33 and have only ever seen parodies of this, or heard people making fun of it. What is old yeller, but a symbolism of our childhood innocence? The world isnt all fun and games, and its never easy to reach the day, the day you see the cold world for what it is. You trade amusements and games, for purpose and understanding. Its dark, and you realize its solely up to you, to light up the way for the future of your seed. Your shoulders get weight added to them, and its a shock. But you become an adult, only when you see the bigger picture. The meaning. You look at your life up to then, and feel the darkness waiting for you on the other side, and you preemptively mourn, as you know the fearful reality, you are destined to venture, for the good of humanity. Just as he looks into the eyes of his childhood dog, but knows he has to ignore his emotional intuition, and for the first time, he has to be a man, and do whats right. The killing of his best friend, will be a trauma that lives with him the rest of his life, but in that moment, and the rebuild he will make of himself to cope, a true man will emerge. A fearless man, who will sacrifice it all for the ones in his life that mean something to him. No danger he ever faces, will be harder to challenge, then the day he had to take charge, and take that gun from his mothers hands, and murder his childhood innocence. Its a symbolic representation for the first tike a boy has to sacrifice part of himself, for the betterment of his future. It is the initiation, inti manhood, and the continuation of the human soecies.

Was watching a rerun of Friends that referenced this and thought Let's see this sad scene, probably ain't nothing. I didn't even watch the whole movie and the one scene alone was sad enough. I think what got me was that it was a kid having to kill his dog. That shit's fucked up. I always thought it was like his dad who did it, teaching him a lesson on what it means having to man up... But it was the kid manning up on his own. Lot of implications here. Great scene.

This gets me wondering about a lot of things.
    1. Did they have a trained acting dog which they could command it to growl and bark on command? Or was it something far more sinister like a truly aggressive dog or a dog which was prodded and teased to the point of aggression at which point they actually shot it dead?.
The white foam on Yeller's cheeks was likely shaving cream.
The fact that Yeller is also shot off screen would also allow people to remove the dog while you are led to believe he was still there.
Old films did use to kill animals and there was no rules against it if they were in good supply.
And then I also wonder all the possibilities that could have happened if Yeller bit any of them.
    A horror spinoff brewing here.
In those days, out in the middle of nowhere without the medicines for rabies or anything.
If he bit all of them then they would all turn against each other until they either killed one another or succumbed to the Illness itself.
If Yeller just bit one of the boys then the family would have to care for the child the best they could, including locking him up if he became hostile or hallucinating and all that.
I don't think they would shoot a child, but would be forced to watch from a distance as the disease slowly kills him.
the most tragic scene would be if one got the disease then transmitted it to another and then another one by one so that each one had to see the other go crazy.
the film should have possibly mentioned something about how humans can get rabid too.
The mother could have said "it's him or us".
of course then that would have made it even more disturbing than it already was.
interesting how Disney films played on our worst nightmares.
Bambi could really make some kids messed up for life knowing their parents can die or even be killed by others.
so you may as well have said that Yeller needed to die before we all become sick.
but it's really good that it says "he's suffering" and it wouldn't be right to keep him suffering.
That's the true meaning of PARENTAL GUIDANCE

+Disneyfan82 Yes that's true and I agree it's sad. Luckily for Travis he learned from Burn Sanderson if an animal does a certain thing, that's a sign that they have rabies (on the movie they called it hydrophobia). For the wolf, he was a street animal but, I'm sure Travis didn't feel too close to Rose the cow to shoot her especially since he said that he is going to get his gun to shoot her and it never showed him crying to shoot her like he was crying to shoot Yeller. It was only Yeller he was close too (of course, I was confused when Travis said that Yeller was his dog at 3:50 since he hated Yeller at first when Arliss claimed him first and the only reason he started to love Yeller was because he saved Arliss from a bear). At least from the second film titled "Savage Sam", their new dog Sam never got any rabies or any sickness but on the movie cover it said that Sam faced scarier dangers than Old Yeller.
