Cine Lenses Vs Photography Lenses

  • If the optical difference is small, why do most pro filmmakers use cine lenses when they're 3 times the price? It has to do with how lenses are used on set.

    Another one is I believe all cine lenses use T-Stops instead of F-Stops (at least all the ones I’ve seen). Which from my understanding makes it possible to exactly match exposure between different lenses, although I’ve never had to do this myself. Since a T-Stop is an actual measured / confirmed value instead of F-Stop that is calculated / theoretical.

      True!

      F-stops are the ratio between the front element (entrance pupil) and focal length. For example a 50mm f/1.0 lens will have a front element that's 50mm wide, while a 50mm f/2.0 lens will have a front element that's 25mm wide. T-stops also take internal light loss into account.

    In some situations I find the shorter focus distance on photo lenses to be more convinient as a solo operator: it allows me to use my nucleus nano with my thumb in tiny moves while holding my shoulder rig with both hands. This is not possible with a longer focus throw(I own a set of Zeiss distagon/planar and use the 28mm and 35mm a lot more than my 50mm and 85mm for that reason).

    • @faithhouse6111
      @faithhouse6111 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it possible to use your nucleus nano with the 50mm though, right?

      Cinema lens is better if you have a seperate focus puller. That's why its called cinema lens, there's no such thing as solo operator in Cinema industry.

Like every single video had this same info. I have been eager to learn why each lens would be superior to the other in a given situation. All my questions answered! Thanks!

    For so many years I've only used Arriflex cine lenses and I rejected automatic lenses absolutely. Few years ago I purchased a Lumix camera that came with an automatic zoom lens, but I relegated the lens at the same day. But some weeks ago I tested the auto zoom just for fun, and do you know what: I like it, it has got some useful atvantages and I use it frequently now, because it's so easy to shoot with it.

    The cine Lens uses T value. And the photography Lens uses F value.
    The F value is an approximation. So the exposure on the same f number differs from Lens to Lens. While the T value is an accurate mesure of Light.

    I adjust the speed of the auto focus to make it look like a cinema rack Focus. My problem is security. I see people missing focus all the time with manual. I even see it in movies sometimes and I point it out.

  • @pawpaw324
    @pawpaw324 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great watch. I though the T stop vs the F stop was another important difference. I thought that the T stop was more accurate when calculating and adjusting for changes in exposure and depth of field.
    I am just a photographer. So, my knowledge of cinema is limited.

    Im debating between the 3 lenses from Mitakon Zhongyi which are T1.0 and the Zoom lens from FZOFilm 10-24 T2.9, any opinions? I personally never use the primes to T1.0, I have the 17mm and is awesome but in real life I had never used it at T1.0

    All true and good advice, although you haven't considered the Lumix systems, which now have Linear focus mode for MF. Now, your fly by wire lenses can act as a mechanical focus lens, with the advantage of being able to be set so the focus throat can go from super quick to extremely long (even longer than big cinema lenses) for that extra precision/control. Along with the Focus Transition feature for racking focus allowing to set 3 focus points, the game is truly changing for solo filmmakers.

    I use my second cine lens as a photo lens on my cheapo b cam, mainly because despite the price of a cine lens, it’s still cheaper than a cine lens + photo lens. Also lets me change t stops on the lens itself instead of the awkward touch screen and also kind of neat for scouting a spot, you can match settings later when you bring the cine body around

    Well, the major difference is that still lenses don’t need to be color matched to each other and cine does. Sigma happens to be one of the few who use the exact same coatings, glass and color matching on both stills and Cine. I have verified this directly from Sigma. I shoot Sigma stills lenses all day and love them. There are a handful of others that match as well, but its not all.

    • @hbp_
      @hbp_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I wonder why they generally aren't. It would make a ton of sense in situations where the final product isn't a single picture.
      I'm not an expert but I have used both types of lenses on both video/cine and still cameras. Mixing either way seems to give some drawbacks. For me it's essentially size/weight and very different needs for focusing. Others often mention the difference between cine and stills mounts, but IMO if you can somehow fix the lens to the rods of the camera, then it doesn't matter even if there was no locking at all.
      Pls no flame war. It's just my personal take 😁

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hbp_ Ah, its actually very simple. you can’t view a picture in rapid succession. A shot between a wide an a mid shot in film takes 1/24th of a second. There is no way to view a photo that fast. So your eye doesn’t remember the color. This is thinking from yesteryear (when it was all shot on film). you are finding more and more that manufacturers are matching coatings now. But, its still not everyone. And, there are SO many fantastic stills lenses out there from yesteryear.

    • @hbp_
      @hbp_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottBalkum sure but the same issue arises if you are viewing two photos side-by-side. Surely it's easier to match just two frames in post.

    para hacer una buena comparativa primero habría que trabajar con ambos lentes y dominar ambos tipos de enfoque, ya que parece una comparativa desde el punto de vista de alguien que solo monta un lente automático y deja que la camara haga todo sin siquiera conocer la camara y sus funciones, las camaras tienen una solución para cada una de las situaciones planteadas, ninguna de las quejas es un problema, para cada situación hay un ajuste, quien conoce bien su camara jamás tiene problemas con el auto enfoque mientras que el encargado de enfocar cada vez que falle tendrá que repetir una y otra vez hasta tener la toma.
