    I bought my 10-yr old:
    Hybrid 22 degree
    7-iron
    Sandwedge
    Putter
All new, under €75. He' now using my old pencil bag, and we played our first 9 holes (35-150m par3').
His reaction when getting the ball airborn and close to 40m in the air: "Dad, this is the coolest game ever!"
Almost brought tears to my eyes.

I paid £3 on a taylormade rbz max pitching wedge on Wednesday and £1 on a putter then £10 on 20 titleist used balls and this morning I went to East Horton golf centre and played the Marwell par 3 course I had fun first time playing on actual greens ⛳️

Love East Horton, never played the Marwell course but with my atrocious short game I probably should!

I think I'd pick the steel. The graphate, at that price would be really unstable!

Simon please spend an hour at night with a £5 uv torch off ebay/Amazon looking for balls in the rough, I do it and have £100’s of £’s worth of pro v’s and chrome softs that save me a fortune!! Would make for a great vid and I find it quite fun and exciting to go ‘ball hunting’
P.s this vid is great and would like to see you do more £50 challenges in a charity shop or boot sale or marketplace and see what you can score best with for £50.
    Keep it up Simon x

Love video like these. Been playing with a half set of irons ( 4,6,8,pw) and a 56 degree and Putter only and my score if anything had improved

i did pick up a set of Ping ISI from the tip today for a tenner . Grips were good too! oh, it came with a hybrid and 3 other clubs too. I don't like the look of the things but i shall takr them to the range and give them a hit , .Its worth a tenner for the hour or so you get at the range .I like to try different clubs and the weird and wonderful things they bring out . I also like hunting for golf balls!, nearly as much as playing golf!

Brilliant video as always Simon! I know it wouldn't be as straightforward, but a similar challenge of second hand clubs on eBay would be brilliant. Or a charity shop run, though the chazzas in the UK don't seem as packed with clubs any more...

I have a big 14 club bag, 2 drivers, 3w, 2&3 utility irons, 2,3&4 hybrids, 5i-Gw, 52, 55, 56 & 60 wedge and a few putters, but usually just take out my small half set bag. I normally just use 3W, 3H, 5-7-9-Gw and putter. Sometimes I’ll add a 56deg SW, or swap out the hybrid for a utility iron and it honestly seems easier to have less options lol. No point in lugging around the extra weight of 14 when 7 works fine. If 7 works, 4 would, too. I could get by just fine with a hybrid, 7i, 52deg, and putter. It’s nearly all used Wilson Staff stuff I bought for pennies on the dollar, and those 4 clubs would easily be under $100usd, and are great quality.
I will say that my 3w is adjustable from 14 to 17deg and that gives a lot of versatility because it can also play like a 4w or a strong 3w if needed. Likewise, all 3 of my hybrids can adjust -1/+2 degrees so there’s also a lot of versatility there.

Just go round the charity shops. Yes to a putter, yes 7 or 8 iron and then just a hybrid recovery club. Don't need a Driver as I'm 230yds off the floor with the Hybrid and 265yds is my best off a tee with my very old Driver.

We go round our local course at night with uv lights and the golf balls glow in the dark we once found over 200 in one night. We did have permission from the the club as we are members. It's like adult trick or treat.

Despite my bad back I insist on carrying so make my bag as light as possible. It's not unusual for me to go out with putter, SW, 9,7,5 & driving iron to be truthful there isn't a big difference in my scores & it's true you adapt your shots.

Nothing wrong with the V300 Slazanger clubs. I have the 3i makes 230-220 yards and 4i makes 220- 205 yards. Great for windy days, swap over from woods. I like the 5w goes 215 yards 5 hybrid goes 200 yards too. Just tip the wood shaft 1inch, whippness goes away.

I use 12 clubs, I got my current putter for free. I play with Pro V1 golf balls I find on the course (currently have 40 of them) and I play with some of the most iconic clubs ever made and paid a silly price for them.
Yes I have wasted a lot of time and money in the past, never again!
The set I have, I will be buried with them.
I think I will spend my money on cool hat's to wear on course from now on.

Funny, as I bought a steel shaft 25 degree hybrid yesterday for 12.99 from sports direct, golfing buddies kinda sneered and rubbished my choice and told me I'd never ever hook a ball with it which is great.

A mate of mine went there about 8-10 years ago....the drivers were £9.99 and all irons were £7.99.....the driver was graphite but it was bright yellow like a Titleist yellow ball....i swear you could see the head of it sticking out his bag from 3/4 mile away. The irons were ok......i wouldn't use them but he only plays 2-3 rounds a year so expensive clubs would just be a waste of money to him
He has bought a black headed driver (from there) since them but he has both in his bag so I don't know why he bothered.

Proshop bargain bins at a place that does club fitting would be a good place to look too. They must have a fair few old trade ins.
My last iron fitting they gave me £100 for a 15 year old set of Adams irons!

The other week I was at the range and two lads came with their brand new sports direct Slazenger driver and after their first attempt, the head flew onto the range. I had to have a laugh and they just turned around like "...It's a Slazenger..."

Interesting? When I started playing nearly 40 years ago I began with a half set of Howsons from Argos. The were rubbish but they got me going. It's a shame I had no one to advise like Simon at the time, or maybe I would have gone for second hand or even new Snake Eyes clubs, which were cheaper than most and made/assembled locally at the time.

  • @GavinCulverhouse

I really do love the fat that you are doing your best to introduce golf as affordable as possible, there has to be a 'however' - however, the price of a round of golf is astronomical. Prices at your course is not that cheap - especially for a beginner - but then again it is not the most expensive.
The other problem about the cost as well as playing is that with the majority of public/municiple course closing, it is harder for a beginner to get on a course, let alone afford to play on a course.
I suppose, just like James Robinson and Rick Shiels, whom I have mentioned about their enforcement of the idea that golf is a game for the elite, you will ignore this.
However, golf wll die in the UK, especially soujthern England if you TH-cam Golfers continue to close your eyes to the lack of facilities available to 'new comers' to the game of golf. Especially for any in and around the mega rich and elitest area of Greater London.
Unless of course, your potential target is the rich and elitest.

This maybe the case in the south. I'm up in Sheffield, and you can get a round of golf in for under £20 on some nice courses. Infact if you book in advance and at certain times you can get 18 holes for £10-15 at 7 or 8 different courses. I played a course in Leeds whilst my car was having a service and it cost £6 walk up plus £5 to hire some clubs! Sure you can also play £100 rounds if you want to... But at my level that is just a waste of money.
