I bought this set last year from direct golf which is owned by sports direct. It was £200 and you got 12 balls and golf shoes with it. Wanted to see if golf was for me and was a nice cheap set to see if I liked it. For the money you cant go wrong, sold them 6 months later for £110 and bought a more expensive set as golf was clearly going to be a hobbies for me. I agree with others the driver was not so good but the irons were pretty decent
Think my first set were a brand called 'confidence' around same price but came with a square driver that sounded horrid when hit. Irons and putter were ok but don't think there's a decent budget driver tbh, better going secondhand imo.
I quite enjoy how you're constantly trying to do what you can to show people that there are plenty of cheap and cheerful ways to get into golf and that it doesn't need to be stupid expensive to play. It might be a small part, but you're still helping to grow the game and that is fantastic.
A friend of mine who took golf up last year bought this golf set. His game has consistently improved and the clubs are still intact. So I would say for beginners or even those who are on a restricted budget but want to play, why the hell not. Great video enjoyed it very much.
Good video.. when I got into golf, I got my first set of clubs from a pawn shop. It was a hodge podge set. Then i got my first brand new set of irons for 99 dollars on a father day day sale!! They weren’t the best but it was better than what I had. My first package set was from Ram and I got them for 150 bucks. That was my set until my game improved and new what to look for in irons and woods.
Bought a set of these 3 years ago, first ever set, new to golf, have slowly upgraded and now have entirely different set in a different bag, but, these were fantatsic value to find out if golf was for me. Would recommend to a complete newbie, cheap easy intro to golf and enjoyable to use!
Morning! Yea perfect timing on this vid. I have a friend getting back into golf and his clubs are 25 years old. He's asked me if new budget clubs are worth it. He'll be watching this video now.
I bought the V300 set a couple of years ago, although steels on iron and wedges (cost £180) and did add a few clubs to give full bag of 14. Dividers are poor on the bag, the putter is awful but did replace them (still have as son will move up to them when taller) with the Callaway edge clubs from Costco, so much nicer but for the price not a bad starter set.
I was young and poor once. I had clubs like this for a few years (albeit I bought mine second hand for about £60 all in (15 years ago). I found they were fine. Sold them on after a while for the price I paid for them. Got slightly better clubs that I still use to this day. I would suggest that the drivers and the putters can usually be upgraded to a decent 2ndhand club and you can add in some nice lob wedges too!
Interesting again! I think everyone jumped on the idea after the success of the "secret" Callaway Edge. But the Edge is different. It is a re-issue/re-brand of the 2014 X2Hot irons which were a premium set at the time (and I think woods are too) and the putter in that set is an older White Hot Odyssey older model as well. I would be interested in your review of the Callaway Edge set.
Check out Gabe, at Lets play thru. He reviews the Edge package set. You'll find him on here. Callaway have issued a Mavrik package set in the UK in the last month as well. Anything that encourages people to take up golf ⛳gets my vote 👍.
@@neilcaulfield7840 Thank you! I have seen Gabe's review and liked it a lot (I have been a sub to his channel for quite a while also). I was interested to see James' perspective. I see a lot of new sets with the same configuration as the Edge coming out his year. Interesting about the Mavrik package set! Thank you! Do you have a link? I agree - anything that gets people on the course is awesome!
Watching you and a few of the other TH-cam golfers has got me to buy my first set of Fazer ctr22 to see if I can get the hang of and like to play golf and for £260 I got the full set with bag and a glove and 2 boxes of ball from American golf. The Fazer ctr22 set is very much the same as the v300 set and very similar price as well.
My first set when I restarted was a set of Maxflis in 2012 on sale for $150. I wasn't sure if I was going to get the bug. Gave the clubs away in 3 mos. and bought a set of Cobras. Kept the stand bag - sure it's cheap but it's a good range bag since I play one lengths and only need to take D, 54, 58, 8i, 5W, H, P. I'm too old to carry a bag for 18 holes.
I wouldn't mock the V300 clubs, finish is not amazing but the play great. I just put my son into these, coming from junior clubs. Always good to buy separately. As mid handicapper to get 180 yards out of the 7 iron graphite, 3 yards off line, then repeat over and over yes please ! I didn't do what you did with the driver either🤣 I used my R10 to gapped his shots, then kept 2-3 shots for what I could get. impressed, me I will be tipping 1inch the driver and fairway woods. Great for the budget!
I started golfing 18months ago got a set of these second hand for £40 the putter and driver are shocking especially the driver if you have speed but i bet its ok for people who don’t. I started off 7 now play off 8 and have used the irons for most of that time and are great if you cant afford others. The irons were steel shafts tho not the graphite. Defo a great set for people starting out
I got these as well. For me the driver is crap and I always sliced but replaced it with a Titleist 909d. I now drive straight at 250 yards. The iorns are OK but the putter got replace as it didn't work for me. Over all the graphit shafts in all the clubs will suit me better as I'm now getting older. This set would be better value if it dumped the current driver, pu the price up a bit because of a better driver.
Been having the same thought after watching budget club reviews on this channel and others. I’m sure a little patience in the second hand market would pay off by getting some older premium sets and regripping them.
I agree. We could use a new 2022 build a bag for different price points. Maybe 300 and 500? You could compare the 300 set to this and the 500 used clubs set to the Costco set. A single recently modern used driver would cost the same as this whole set, which makes this set pretty good value if you ask me.
Probably good value for beginner, however I feel you would struggle to sell these on E Bay if did not work out.The most expensive set of irons I ever had was a cheaper make which I was unable to re sell. I would go for second hand Mizuno or Ping before considering these.
Do you know anything about rife clubs or tour edge hl3? I heard tour edge are up and coming. I need to get new set tour edge are between €700-€800 read a few reviews seemed ok but I'd like your opinion. Have you ever tried either? Thanks
Good vid! I like what you said about attitude. Golf is definitely a mental game. And we need more people involved in the game. Prices like this help in that area.
I got these clubs last year at £189. Mine are steel shafts so dont know if that makes a difference, As a brand new golfer im happy with them but think i would of been better spending £200 on used clubs. Should note im on the range every week and have only done 9 holes on an actual course. But started lessons now so will probably be looking to upgrade my clubs, one club at a time. great vid though.
I own 5 sets of vintage Slazengers and they are all quality clubs. If I have a 'dud' game , that's down to me. James, I'm glad these clubs were up to your standard.
The floppy regular flex let you down... but they are certainly an option for a starter set. Putting a reasonable used set together for that price would need some great finds...
It would be interesting to check the loft of the irons against your regular irons to see how they compare if you used these on a regular basis your game would adapt to the clubs .These are entry level clubs designed for the average man or woman they have quite reasonable playability should be ok until a player reaches single figure handicap then probably best to be custom fitted from that point onwards.
i started golfing and needed driver. I bought the slazenger driver and it is excellent for the money. The head was decent but i grew off from the regular shaft quite fast and needed to change driver. This driver won't give you the newest tech but at this price you are not paying for it either. Would buy it again!
If I was just starting to play golf those clubs would be a good starter set......I am interested in the comparison between the cobra set to see which would be better if I was a beginner golfer. Way to be james!!!
Well...I have seen these clubs before on Golf Mates, when he was down in Dubai. He had a hard time controlling the driver, although I think he hit the Rescue club okay. He also had a hard time with the irons...but..it could have been Liam's swing. I can't say I have never thought about getting a boxed set, but..I have never seen a set made for someone that is 6'6"! My clubs are 1.5" longer, they are 3° upright, and are 3° stronger ( which was my personal preference...but I left the wedges as they came from the manufacturer!)
James, unrelated but an ide for content. Get hold of a Honma XP-1 Driver (stiff shaft) 9.5° and test it against a premium driver. I say this these were new in 19/20 and cost £560 and were generally ignored possibly as for that amount of Wedge people would expect miracles. They are now though available with the own stock stiff shafts (albeit light weight ones) at only £190-£200 which is an absolute steal.
What? No Slazenger balls to add to this club test? 😢 Great video James and good on you for meeting the needs of novice golfers. People shouldn't expect a Ferrari on a Kia budget. But nowadays, there are no Bad cars, just as there are No Bad clubs, just clubs that are appropriate for the skill level and budget. Your mate Liam Harrison on Golf Mates in Dubai used these clubs to have a series of games against pros. They had to use the Slazengers, he used his Mizunos. Results were really interesting.
How can you compare it to the Costco cobra set?? The sports direct set is half the price and comes with a bag. If you are going to compare with anything do a ben sayers set or fazer

Im still using these irons and wedges, the driver, hybrid wood and putter arent amazing but the irons are fantastic for the price, been as low as 11 handicap in just over a year, its the indian not the arrow
Great review James. I think it is great that there are more affordable package sets. Not everyone has the time, or knowledge, to get started with second hand clubs.
Iv watched golf for years but always been put of by thinking I need to spend £800 plus on a set as a beginner, I’m now 32 and thinking of getting into golf never played before just always enjoyed to watch it just thinking of spending up to £300 on a beginner set just feel I’ll be judge when going to a range or a course
Ultimately (for the most part) you do get what you pay for. My take is that marginal gains become increasingly expensive and it is doubtful if the expense can be justified - if money is the only factor. For some it maybe a bigger factor than for others and what is great is that these series (along with the Costco series) show that golf is not an exclusive/elite sport only for the rich. It probably also shows that most of us who are brand faithful might be suckered in. Still from my perspective, "nothing feels like a Mizuno" 😉
I have to say I spent $100 for my first full set. But that was 30 years ago and no bag or putter! So for me , no too bad!! BTW, the woods we’re actually wood!! Just saying
Great review! I've always been a fan of the idea of a box set for new starters to golf and it's quite clear from your review that these clubs can be used for an enjoyable round of golf. Some people are very snobby about box sets and think newbies should buy second hand instead.... but if you were new to golf how on earth would you know what to buy second hand and you could end up with stuff totally unsuitable to a beginner. For me the problem with box sets is that they do sometimes put too much in the box at a very low price point and quality then suffers.... hint ro Sports Direct - might be better to have the same price with fewer clubs - a slightly better quality 3W, 4H, half set irons and two wedges plus a putter which is plenty to get around a standard UK pay and play municipal course.
Wish when I started playing back in the dark ages they had sets like these! I think they’re a great product for beginners or people returning to the game after a long layoff.👍🏻
My guess after you show the box is these are equivalent to Wilson Starter Set. Great for Beginners but for golfers who are wanting to shoot below 90 need better clubs..
@@paulmcgee1867 I got the Wilson X-31 starter set - it's a half set instead of full set, so didn't include a driver or pitching wedge. The bag and putter both felt much better quality as do the irons (also graphite). Once my technique improved with my 3 wood, I picked up a Ping I-15 driver for £60, a second hand Wilson Staff PW and upgraded to an Odyssey putter for around £100 (it's the club I'll be using most). The irons themselves are fine but sadly Wilson don't do a completer set so will bide my time and upgrade to a second hand premium set when I think I'll be playing more often. I'm enjoying hitting good shots rather than being angry at bad shots; I need to decide if time and budget allow me to push on and switch that around.
Good review of a set of clubs that probably aren't aimed at someone with your skill level. would be interested to see what an 18 or 36 handicapper thinks of them.
James I bet you could play with an assortment of garden tools like tin cup and still make par... 😂 For the comparison vid get Foxy along for a high handicapper input?
heh slazenger been around awhile. think my dad had a set in the 90's. I remember finding the golf balls all the time as well. More towards beginners set
Nice video James. The clubs for a total beginner are in my opinion very good for the money you paid. For the so called proper price of £400+ they are a nonsense, nowhere near worth that sort of money. Obviously for using them I was expecting plenty of shots going right due to the flex of the shafts but you did better than I expected, but then again you are a Pga Professional. I know a lot of beginners who swing nearly as fast as me and so those so called regular might not be the best option.
They have been much cheaper in the past i know as a friend of mine bought 1 of their sets about 5 years ago. Same maker... bag all the clubs £199.99 And they are (,imo) not even close to as good as the Costco cobra's. I've never hit either because I'm a lefty but when he hits the slazenger driver i look around and pretend he's not with us
One thing I dislike about golf is the brand name snobbery. Just because someone uses Taylormade, Ping, Callaway, Mizuno etc. doesn’t make them anything special. It’s the person behind them, not the tools. If I saw someone use these slazengers, I would respect that they don’t care what people think. They just want to play the beautiful game of golf
It's not a scam - that would mean the box being filled with rocks or similar, which would be illegal. You pay for a set of golf clubs, you get a set of golf clubs. There may be questions about quality, but it's a perfectly legal transaction.
It's funny, but almost every time pros test cheap club sets (and put the results on TH-cam), they find that they hit big fades with the drivers (at least until they get used to them). I guess it may be because of the shafts?
I bought this set last year from direct golf which is owned by sports direct. It was £200 and you got 12 balls and golf shoes with it. How can you compare it to the Costco cobra set?? The sports direct set is half the price and comes with a bag. If you are going to compare with anything do a ben sayers set or fazer
I work as a greenkeeper in portugal , im in love with golf and im training my shots , i want to buy a cheap set beacause im a begginer at the sport , i think that one might be it , thx for the video !
Liam on the golf mates also reviewed these slazenger and he recond that the grips were not aligned right on them
James would love to see Foxy try the Slazenger and the Cobra set as they are aimed at more his handicap mark I think.
I had to laugh James. 50% off £420 should have been £210. It cleverly said upto 50% off. 😄
James showing his math skill 😂😂... "Up to 50% off", so they'd be£210 if they were half price.i 'd be checking your score cards very carefully haha
Another great video! I need me a Mizuno bag to match my JPX 921 HM irons.
Would love to see your thoughts on the direct to consumer wedges like Bombtech- glad I subbed to this channel
I have to say I spent $100 for my first full set. But that was 30 years ago and no bag or putter! So for me , no too bad!! BTW, the woods we’re actually wood!! Just saying
Brilliant video James, really interesting to see the difference when using a very cheap set of clubs.
Playing from the "wrong" fairway??? Welcome to my game! Enjoyed it James - Thanks!
For me the problem with box sets is that they do sometimes put too much in the box at a very low price point and quality then suffers.... hint ro Sports Direct - might be better to have the same price with fewer clubs -
a slightly better quality 3W, 4H, half set irons and two wedges plus a putter which is plenty to get around a standard UK pay and play municipal course.
I thought you might have two birdies on one hole with the pheasants.
Is that meadow hall shopping centre in sheffield?
I bought an almost brand new full set of Dunlop DDH and bag at an auction for £65. forget shops and get to your local auction
Be interesting to see how they compare to a mid-priced package set somewhere between Slazenger and Callaway Edge/Cobra e.g. Lynx
I remember when slazenger used to make Bladed clubs for Sevvy, hard to believe where tjhey are now.
“Well at least it has a headcover...” 😂
That drive on your fav hole was better than your stealth into the water!
Good review of a set of clubs that probably aren't aimed at someone with your skill level. would be interested to see what an 18 or 36 handicapper thinks of them.
I still game a set of howsen clubs that I got as a package set 20yrs ago !!
I like videos on boxes sets reminds me how in expensive golf can be.
Looks like there are no internal divisions in the bag. But what did you expect. 👍👍👍
sports direct stock arrives with the discount stickers on already
James I bet you could play with an assortment of garden tools like tin cup and still make par... 😂
For the comparison vid get Foxy along for a high handicapper input?
Consider it done 🤘🏼⛳️
heh slazenger been around awhile. think my dad had a set in the 90's. I remember finding the golf balls all the time as well. More towards beginners set
They were about £180 for the set two or three years ago.
how good are they for a high handicap
Nice video James. The clubs for a total beginner are in my opinion very good for the money you paid. For the so called proper price of £400+ they are a nonsense, nowhere near worth that sort of money. Obviously for using them I was expecting plenty of shots going right due to the flex of the shafts but you did better than I expected, but then again you are a Pga Professional. I know a lot of beginners who swing nearly as fast as me and so those so called regular might not be the best option.
What brand is your apparel..love that logo
Castore
They have been much cheaper in the past i know as a friend of mine bought 1 of their sets about 5 years ago.
Same maker... bag all the clubs £199.99
And they are (,imo) not even close to as good as the Costco cobra's.
I've never hit either because I'm a lefty but when he hits the slazenger driver i look around and pretend he's not with us
Was that a game pheasant looking at you when you were striking the 7 iron?
The other James Robinson did very well, with the half set version of those. 🙂
They just want to play the beautiful game of golf
please do a review on callaway strata
I think they use the same manufacturer just different branding and colour scheme. I had the exact same clubs and bag but they were Wilson.
Great review on a budget set of clubs James and they look perfect for someone new to the game
One thing I always think whatever the ability of the golfer at the end of the day you still have to be able to hit the ball.
A good workman never blames his tools .
For the price not bad a beginner could pay more for a branded set like the cobra and still play the same but interesting set
It's not a scam - that would mean the box being filled with rocks or similar, which would be illegal. You pay for a set of golf clubs, you get a set of golf clubs. There may be questions about quality, but it's a perfectly legal transaction.
Remember Gary Player who won 100 tournaments with the unbranded blade putter he used for 30 years that speaks for itself.
It's funny, but almost every time pros test cheap club sets (and put the results on TH-cam), they find that they hit big fades with the drivers (at least until they get used to them). I guess it may be because of the shafts?
Great starter set. Nice video
Think Liam at Golf mates has already done a series with these clubs with Pro and hackers, keep up James :) and yes not the best clubs ever built
I think most people have Stephen. Luckily enough it’s TH-cam and not the stock exchange 😂🤘🏼⛳️
